  • I think the sounds of 2000-2010 really influenced the way I see and make electronic music today. No matter what I do or what synths I play, I always end up gravitating towards particular sounds and grooves that remind me of the classic progressive house. I was greatly inspired by producers such as Echomen, Satoshi Tomiie, Chris Micali, Sasha, Lee Burridge, Matthew Dekay and many others which shaped the way I create my tracks. I wanted to say that because I feel that this particular track reflects it and it reminds me a lot of the music of those times.
Anyway, this time I decided to temporarily switch back from the TR-8s to my Model:Samples for drums, but I also made use of the amazing Elektron's sequencer to sequence the Model D and Volca FM. So, 4 tracks of the M:S were used to play drums and some guitar samples while 2 remaining tracks were used to sequence external synths. The JD-08 was sequenced using the Keystep Pro which was also used to send MIDI clock to the M:S.
I really like making use of the Model D’s 3 oscillators. Here I used the main oscillator for bass, the 2nd oscillator was tuned 1 octave up and the 3rd oscillator was detuned 5 semitones making a lead sound on top of the bass. I also added some white noise to make it a bit grittier. At the end of the jam, I turned all the oscillators off and experimented with the noise! I’m actually very happy with the result! So, I once again proved to myself that the Model D is a great machine with a very rich sound that can almost be treated like two instruments. It just fills the sonic space so well! I ran the D through a custom effects stompbox based on the NTS-1 allowing me to tweak live the delay and reverb parameters to create tension in some parts of the jam.
The Volca FM was sent to a Zoom MS-70CDR pedal. In the case of JD-08, I used exclusively the internal effects. I also used the tone palette to control the volume of each tone of the patch. You can hear that at the beginning when I'm slowly introducing each tone during the intro. The JD-08 patch is a custom one that I made specifically for this track.
Hope you enjoy the jam and let me know what you think! Make sure to listen with headphones!
