    Genshin is set in 7 nations
    Each nation has its own main element and is based on a different culture, and the music reflects that too.
    1 - Mondstadt: a country based on medieval Germany, with traces of Italy and other European countries, it uses alot of wind instruments in basically every soundtrack, because its the nation of wind.
    2 - Liyue: a nation based on ancient dynasty China, uses alot of traditional Chinese instruments and ancient Chinese opera, since its the nation of rock, it has very bombastic OSTs.
    3 - Inazuma: a country based on ancient Japan, its a very secluded nation shrouded in a civil war, so the music reflects that, the Raiden Shogun is the God of this nation.
    4 - Sumeru: a nation based on India and middle eastern countries, its separated into two distinct regions, the desert and forest, and the music reflects that.
    5 - Fontaine: the nation based on industrial revolution France and England, its very mysterious and uses alot of accordion, its the nation of water.
    6 - Natlan: the nation based on pre-colonialism south and central America, we don't know much about its OST since its not out yet.
    7 - snezhnaya: the nation of ice, based on Russia, we again don't know much about its OST.

  • @stars_and_lattes3078
    @stars_and_lattes3078 Год назад +283

    A few things! the first "phase" technically isn't apart of the boss battle, so the motifs you were hearing actually belonged to another character (specifically a boss preceding this one). You mentioned how the music has eastern influences, and that's because this boss, along with the nation she belongs to, is based on/influneced by Traditional Japan (I think specifically Edo/Tokugawa era Japan!). Each region and it's bosses are based on different regions.
    (If you plan to listen to more Genshin music, you should definitely listen to Saltatio Favillae/Signora boss theme, as it's where those beginning motifs come from! Other popular ones are Polumnia Omnia and God-Devouring Mania)

    • @hypercube8735
      @hypercube8735 Год назад +1

      Inazuma (and its whole isolation period, the vision hunt decree, etc.) is indeed based on the Tokugawa Bakufu (specifically, the islands being closed and surrounded by impenetrable storms is based on Tokugawa deliberately closing the country off from the world, and the vision hunt decree is based on the practice of Sword Hunts where a new ruler after a period of civil war would confiscate weapons from anyone who might rise up to challenge their power, as a way to consolidate control and maintain stability. The most famous Sword Hunt was done by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a contemporary of the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, during the Sengoku period. Iirc in the Edo Period they didn't have a total sword ban, but carrying swords was restricted to members of the samurai class).

  • @M00nSlippers
    @M00nSlippers Год назад +71

    The reason 'the Execution' cutscene sounds so very different is because it represents a different character. In this situation you basically have back-to-back boss fights. You have a boss fight with Signora, who has an eastern European, witchy theme. You defeat this character and Raiden shogun appears and literally executes that character and begins the next boss fight. So 'the Execution' is a mix of Signora themes (the choir parts mostly represent her') and Raiden's theme (Japanese traditional instruments like the Japanese flute).

    YES HE'S BEING CONVERTED
    also, on the eastern instruments used: genshin impact is split up into 7 regions (4 have been released, the 5th releases literally tomorrow), and each region is based on a different real world country. and so, the music for each region incorporates real life instruments and styles from that region. as a result, the soundtrack is incredibly varied, as it incorporates a lot of different cultures.
    raiden shogun is a boss/character from inazuma, which is based on japan. hence, the japanese instruments.
    some of the leitmotifs used in the beginning with the cutscene theme are actually from another region, sneznhaya, which is based on russia.

    Genshin impact is a MASSIVE melting pot of cultural music, especially when it comes to the battle ost’s and each individual boss fight.
    The one you listened to comes from a major boss fight within the story that takes place in the nation of Inazuma (inspired by Japan)
    There are many bossfight songs I do recommend!
    Scaramouche Boss Theme - Traditional Japanese mixed with electric
    La Signoras Boss Theme - More Latin inspired combined with rock
    Apeps Boss Theme - Traditional middle eastern
    Azdahas Boss Theme - Traditional Chinese mixed with rock

  • @ldreamshifterl
    @ldreamshifterl Год назад +64

    Without giving too much away, you were right about the character being otherworldly. Yu-Peng Chen tends to mix up traditional and electronic elements in much of the music from the game. For this character in particular, there was more emphasis on the electronic parts because, as her name suggests, her element is lightning/electricity. The Eastern instruments represent the region she is from, which is Genshin's version of Japan. In all regions of the game, the music will use elements of the countries represented.
    Since we're giving suggestions, I'll recommend a few: keeping in the spirit of multi-phase, Ode to Azhdaha/Rage Beneath the Mountain (Azhdaha theme) and Chrysalis Suspirii/Saltatio Favillae (Signora theme). A Storm, A Spire, and A Sanctum and Die Mittsommernacht-Fantasie are also wonderful tracks. To be honest though, all of their themes, whether it's a boss battle, a normal battle, character themes- just the music in the game overall is amazing.

  • @abigwreck
    @abigwreck Год назад +66

    You mentioned the 2 different instruments representing different characters.
    Duality is a huge theme for her character, so they likely represent the Raiden Shogun & Ei.
    The shogun, as a creation, could also be represented by the electronic music, while the traditional instruments represent Ei.

    Genshin music is truly great for setting up the atmosphere.
    I'm sure a lot of people will recommend boss themes (some already did), but from other great tracks i would recommend:
    Die mittsommernacht-fantasie - A track that was used only for a limited time and never came back in the game again
    Across dimming asterisms - A normal battle theme
    Halcyon Times - Just a regular tavern theme, mostly just my fav
    The Almighty Violet Thunder - Rock/metal version of the Riden theme (not a cover, actually in game)
    But overall, the whole OST from genshin is just great to listen to

    In fact, this Raiden theme has another phase but it's basically the same as phase 2 but metal version.

  • @northstar67
    @northstar67 Год назад +23

    The reason why this music also has EDM elements is because raiden is the god of lightning in this game.
    For recommendations:
    LA SIGNORA BATTLE THEME:
    you heard her motif in the executin phase of raiden
    SCARAMOUCH battle theme:
    He's connected both to a faction la signora belongs with and heavily connected to the raiden shogun herself.
    Tartaglia battle theme: which also belongs to a certain faction together with la signora and scaramouch.

    @effortlessfury Год назад +8

    Genshin is more of a sci-fi fantasy world, where there are underlying mechanics as to how the world functions, than a strictly medieval one. People in the world attempt to demystify the mysterious. The game has a mixture of cultures in its nations, and with that a mixture of musical representatiom; genre fusions occur in key scenarios where exceptional things are occurring.
    On the topic of looping tracks, they rarely end cleanly in the game, as an event occurs to progress to another stage of story or combat, and will thus crossfade into something else. Thus, all looping tracks will have an album-only clean end point.

    The Raiden Shogun is the personification of lightining, and shes the God of Inazuma, the nation of lightning.
    The music reflects that through eletronic instruments.

    • @Haruuuuu02
      @Haruuuuu02 Год назад

      I think the reason why the music also sounds super EDM is because this is a battle against the puppet of Raiden Shogun, so they add what he said synthetic music distortion to a traditional one, making the enemy feels « alien », because she is a puppet.

    This game has many very good music and one of the defining characteristics is the use of orchestration with electronic, rock and ethnic elements. There's even some music with Opera, like Saltatio Favillae (Signora Boss Theme Phase 2), there's Dance of Sabzerus which has Bossa Nova elements. HoYo-Mix is one of my favorite music production studios as of late
    The electronic music here is probably symbolism for the Shogun being the "God of Thunder", while the Japanese instruments symbolize the region she reigns over which is inspired by medieval Japan.

In reality its admirable that there are a lot of cultural influences in both the game's music, world-building, and themes

    The motif you hear e.g. starting on 16:16 of your video is leitmotif of the main island of the nation (which is based on Japan, hence use of traditional Japanese instruments). It's based on traditional Japanese song Sakura Sakura and is used in multiple BGMs throughout the area. I find it fascinating how menacing it sounds in this battle theme while it sounds serene and peaceful in version for rural areas, or busy when used for city streets. All that done to my understanding just by choice of instruments, without changing the melody or tempo.
    But I'm no musician, might be wrong. I just love to listen to it every now and then.

      @@Jev_the_fluorescent_shrimp it certainly feels uniquely boring, it's quite literally just the same weather everyday, for every year, without change. The everyday life thing is fine though since you could pick any single city from the country and you'd get at least 5 different cultures and traditions, we're not exactly short on peer pressure from ancestors.

    For the lore context here:
    You’re fighting the literal God of Electro on a mental plane of her own creation.
    The nation she rules is based on traditional Japan, and she has the ideal of Eternity (which is why she usually isolates herself on this mental plane)
    So the electronic-traditional Japanese instrument mix and ‘otherworldly’ quality quite reflect the situation.
    The Execution transitions between the character themes of La Signora and Raiden Shogun, which is the main reason it sounds different.
    The ‘more heroic/less tense’ nature of part 2 is simple: Part 1 is an effectively hopeless fight (you already lost to her once in similar context), but in part 2 you got a massive powerup to the point that you’re practically unkillable.

  • @Tauchfix
    @Tauchfix Год назад +1

    The „first phase“ as you called it is actually the fade out of the boss battle which happened right before this one so thats why it sounds different. You should definitely also check out the one before the Raiden Shogun. ( its the battle theme from La Signora)

    I'm surprised no one who has analyzed these few pieces has ever mentioned the cadence that begins at 3:10 (A7 to Dbm). It is deliberately set up with a dominant chord held over six pulses, meant to prepare the listener for a resolution to the i chord, and then it resolves to the key a step below (Dbm) the original (Dm). It really contributes to the shocking, unsettling, and _serious_ feelings this moment in the game are supposed to hold, as the situation itself rightly is.
    A very good reaction on Davi's part, and I'm very excited to see more Genshin from him, of course; I just am a little surprised _nobody_ mentioned it, though he got close with his mention of the differences in the songs' keys.

    12:42 Thanks for the easy-to-understand explanation "you don't notice consciously but your brain notices it". Some other will definitely throw a lot of music theory or terminology here.
    I want to add some extra info without throwing in too much game specific terms (others may have pointed this out though).
    1. The video you are watching is for the cutscene/battle in during the story quest. The music starting from 16:00 (which you called "Phase 2") is also used in Raiden Shogun weekly boss battle (same boss, just that we can attack it outside of story quest).
    The above mentioned music is actually consist of two similar track: one is peaceful, and one is more intense. This boss has two forms: one is normal, and one is more powerful. In normal form, the peaceful track is used, in powerful form, the intense track is used.
    What's interesting is, this boss switches back and forth between two forms periodically. Which means the battle theme also blends between peaceful track and intense track. You can look for the weekly boss battle version and see (listen?) to the transition when the boss switches form. In this video onle the peaceful track is present.
    2. In this game, especially when this boss is released, people were relying heavily on the use of Skill to battle (in contrast to Normal Attack. In the part at 8:25, the boss suddenly lock player out of all Skill, which leave player in huge disadvantage and also this is the first time ever player got locked out of all skill. I think this is also the reason the music here starts to feel more alien, uneasy as you described.
    You can also listen to those track from the OST here: ruclips.net/video/QrSeAOUZpeQ/видео.html
    They are Track 3 (Phase 1), Track 4 (Phase 2 peaceful version) and Track 5 (Phase 2 intense version).

    What's really interesting is that most of what you heard up till 3:20 was Signora's theme and not Raiden's theme, it was the other character that you saw in the video aside from Raiden. That's why the motif of Signora isn't in the remainding parts of the song.

    Just a suggestion - to listen to the official soundtrack when reacting because that will give you the full experience rather than a version based on someone's gameplay which can cut things short. Also the official version won't show the gameplay so it can be more interesting to hear what your reactions are only based on the music. Very cool that you know your Japanese instruments. Looking forwards to more GI reactions.

  • @freedragoons

    All of the Genshin music has two versions, Game version and OST version. The game versions will loop seamlessly for battles, while the OST version has a distinct end point. The execution of this only plays in a cutscene, and the first phase only plays once in the story. The final portion can be heard any time by fighting the weekly version of the boss, and will flip flawlessly between the version you hear here and a metal version complete with distorted guitars and a more aggressive drum line.
    Genshin's music doesn't miss, especially for the boss themes. You could choose any of them to listen to and find something extremely impressive about it.

    as for the japanese flute/guitar, its used maybe bec. we fight the archon of the region of inazuma (region based of japanese). I also want to take a guess that the electronic kind of sound is based on the speed and agility of the boss. As a genshin player myself, its really hard to dodge even after fighting it alot of times.

    Raiden's boss fights are my favorite. Unlike the other bosses, Raiden literally just comes to throw hands. She isn't spamming all kinds of big attacks that are just hitting everywhere; she's just here to face you head on. The music isn't as epic as the others but that's because it's the most intense fight. So the simple music really compliments the rather fast paced and intense battle.

    At the first part there are actually 2 leitmotifs involved. The first one is La Signora's and the second one is Raiden Shogun's. It's because that part is when there was conflict between them.

  • @bradleyilagan3939

    The first phase reflects the character of Raiden Shogun as the Electro Archon with an unwavering will. It had an abrupt end, but in reality, there is a cutscene that plays the same melody which is then elevated by some orchestration (called "Approaching Thunder"). It symbolizes the MC at the climax of confronting the Shogun. The second phase plays the leitmotif of the nation of Inazuma because this isn't just a fight between the Shogun and the MC, but of her unwavering stance to the principle of eternity against her people and their ambition, pushing them to move forward.

    Genshin music is amazing I a sense as in the 1st phase they use 2 shamisen and each shamisen attributes to the archon present and past. And then in the next phase along with the shamisen they use flute so as incur a passage of time ( for context the 2 gods fought for some years under a domain.) Just like this each main theme of a region like sumeru, inazuma and fontaine and liyue they include a motif that generalizes the story of that region.
    Pls also have a listen to sumeru symphony.

    For more context on 2nd phase: Genshin has several regions inspired by different real life regions and Raiden Shogun is the main boss of Inazuma which is like genshin version of Japan and that's why they use the shakuhachi and shamisen. Every region's music is inspired by music of that region from real life. The main motif we hear in the 2nd phase of the base is a theme we hear throughout the game many many times while exploring this region, it's like the main theme of the region and in 2nd phase it's like culmination of the whole nation which gives the feel of a triumph.
