They come in two different chassis lengths. G stands for "Gelände" in German,( Terrain) and that's what they are and were used for, and the 300 are with the best ever built engine from Mercedes, they make over a million km without any repair and are inline 5. They wagons are all built in Austria by Steyr Daimler Puch and Peugeot bolt them in license for a while for military use only and compliance in NATO troops. and Africa use. The gas versions are not popular here, and the AMG Versions and 8 cyl versions are seen as" For braggers and not understanding people only".
Seen with those, you disqualfy yourself immediately.

A few basics: the original version of the G is called the W460. According to official sources, it was built from 1979 to 1992. From 1992 onwards, the modernised and more luxurious version, the W463, was available. As a military and government vehicle, the G was built as the W461 version and was essentially the real successor to the W460. At the beginning, there were no plans to sell the W461 to private individuals. Due to the demand to sell the less luxurious version to private individuals, the W461 PUR and Professional models were introduced.
I am writing officially because my Wolf is a W461 built in 1989.
I particularly like the narrow W460 and early W461, as the bumper strip on the side is the widest part of the vehicle. Later, with wheel arch extensions, the bumper strip is practically pointless. The pre-chamber diesel engines are relatively quiet, the direct injection engines are much rougher. Unfortunately, the pre-chamber engines are a bit weak even as turbodiesels.

12 years ago, I came across a military one from the Dutch National Reserve forces at some barracks. I think it was a 240D from 1977 and it had 2.000 miles on it. As they are stored dry and well maintained, the car was in perfect condition. Pro tip, all government non-weaponised properties that is are movable, among which these things, sometimes get auctioned by the government by the service called "Domeinen". Pro tip 2: The military versions can even run (not very well) on kerosene which is a NATO requirement.

I was in the Dutch army when they were gradually replacing the Land Rover Defender for the Mercedes Benz G and i got to drive both 😊. They were both totally utilitary, but still so different. The G was so much more comfy in every possible way; suspension, sound, seats, sitting space (elbows, butt, legs, feet), shifting gears (two fingers easy)...Wow, what a difference! I like both, but for daily driving the G is king.

You saw Loads of these in Norway in the 80-90's thanks to some very beneficial tax-exempts (and the Dot-Com bubble), and of course all our military branches had Geländewagon (and Volvo, and some US-trucks). "Back in the old days", G-Class Mercedes vehicles (G-Wagon) were also quite rare in private hands in Germany, except for veterinarians working mainly in rural areas or on farms, as well as foresters and hunters, they were more likely to have a G-Class.
Otherwise, you mostly saw them with the THW (Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief, part of disaster response) or with "Y-Tours," the joking name for a travel organizer, as the German military repeatedly sent convoys through the country and their license plates start with a "Y."
Nowadays, the glossy G-Class vehicles have become more common, much like in the U.S. However, they’re still relatively rare, as most people tend to prefer SUVs from Audi, BMW, Porsche, ...

Model G was concepted as a military car.. The original has a multi-fuel engine. you can drive with Diesel, Sunflower oil ore Terpentin and much other fuels.. At the beginning of the 1990s, the decision fell on Daimler-Benz AG, which had applied with the Mercedes-Benz 250 GD from the W 460 series. The order included the delivery of 12,500 vehicles. After a competition to find a name within the Bundeswehr, the new vehicle was given the internal name “Wolf”. The G-Class is used, among other things, as a carrier vehicle for the 120 mm mortar, as a carrier for the Milan weapon system or as a medical vehicle.

It was a cooperation between Mercedes Benz and Steyr-Daimler-Puch and until 2000 they were sold here in Austria as "Puch G". They are built in Graz/Austria. Steyr-Daimler-Puch also made the Haflinger and Pinzgauer, some of the most capable offroaders, so the offroad stuff for the G came from them. In the Austrian military they were replacements/additions to the old Pinzgauer, and I drove both the Pinzgauer and the 230G, a 2.3Liter inline4 petrol engine, no powersteering, no electric stuff, all manual. Nothing inside you couldn't hose down to get rid of the dirt. It had just above 90HP but offroad that didn't matter, it was awesome. The Logo you saw at 23:09 is from Steyr-Daimler-Puch.

You should also check out the Volkswagen Iltis. Both the Mercedes G-Wagon and the VW Iltis were developed in the 1970s. VW was on the verge of bankruptcy at the time and to help the company, the contract was initially awarded to VW. They produced the Iltis (the German word for Polecat) for various armies in Europe, Africa, Asia and also for the Canadian military. The VW Iltis replaced the VW 181, which you will know in the States as "The Thing". In 1980, a VW Iltis won the Paris Dakar Rally.
I drove the Iltis myself in the German military in the 1980s. You always had to drive with four-wheel drive engaged and the maximum permitted speed was 50mph because the car was unstable after that. The four-wheel drive engaged was to somewhat prevent the tendency to roll over if you took corners too quickly. However, you always had to drive very carefully, especially on tight corners. Due to this shortage, the Mercedes G-Wagon, which the German military also calls the Mercedes Wolf, was gradually purchased.
The VW Iltis is actually an Audi. And the all-wheel drive technology of the Iltis was the starting signal for the development of the Audi Quattro models in the 1980s. As far as off-road capabilities were concerned, I at least had no complaints. The Iltis never let me down once.

Originally the G-Wagon Series starting from 1979 on, mostly developed by Steyr-Puch at Austria because there sat the Allwheel Drive specialists of Europe in 1970s. These G-Wagon were produced under Nutzfahrzeug Sparte at Mercedes as utility light trucks, the seats were with MB-Tex or simple Cotton Fabric plus Rubberleather. Real Leather was super extra and had to be wished personally at the dealer, until 1994or 1996 it was this way, then Mercedes split the model range into utility vehicles and luxury jeep vehicles.
Today only the luxury models survived.

These have the logo you saw at the end, which is the "Puch" logo. The "G" stands for "Geländewagen" which literally translates to "terrain wagon", but in meaning it is just "off-road car".

The New " Mall Crawlers " have VERY little in common with these " Old Girls " . Early ones were almost ALL diesels .
    There have been Heaps of different Engines in them . i-4's , I-5's , I-6's , a V-6 , V-8's and even a V-12 .
Portal Axles on Solid diffs were offered on MANY Models . The New ones are 4 wheel Independent . Truly a Soft roader SUV .

There are military vehicle collectors who are desperately trying to get their hands on the French "Wolf", as it is built by Peugeot and is called the "P4" or the Austrian variant by Steyr-Puch, funnily enough it is simply called the "G" there.
I'm not sure, but I think there is also a Canadian variant, built by Bombardier under license?! They also built the VW ILTIS for the Canadian army

    8:13 - Because it's the famous, almost indestructible, 3.0L inline-6 diesel engine. That's why. 🙂

12:20 - And this one is the shorter wheelbase, 3-door version.

Look that beast up for sure 😁

The very most G-Wagen, even here in germany, are just show-off luxury toys. We call SUV like that "Stadtpanzer", wich means city-tanks. G-Wagen used to be really good offroaders, but most new ones are sold in those luxury versions, these days. And they became some sort of collector car, so even the older ones are often sold for the same price as new Wrangler Rubicon. I really like the older non-luxury G-Class, but if I can get a new Wrangler for the same money, I´d take that! Thats probably why the non-luxury ones are rare, even in germany. At least I don´t see them often, other than those Stadtpanzer versions in rich citys.

    Parts are freakin expensive.
The original one is developed and produced by Puch (ch pronounced like j in Spanish) in Austria (The funny little Arnold and Adolf country in the Alps).
There was a combination of Unimog and G-Klasse: G-Klasse with the portal axles of the Unimog.
    And there were 6x6's.

Puch developed the G in cooperation with Mercedes. In the early 70´s it was produced only in Austria an the Austrian and German military used it as the Puch G (G for "Gelaendewagen" that means simply Off-Road vehicle). If you are a offroad freak i strongly recommend watching (and may be reacting) to the Puch Pinzgauer. Every military personnel I met (and there were many nations - I was a UN soldier for 8 years) said that the Pinzgauer is the best off-road vehicle they have ever driven.

I had an ex military 240 GD from the norwegian army. I has locking diffs on both axles. It has just rubber mats you can take out and hose out dirt from the floor. Just pull the floor plugs and drain the water out. The norwegian version had webasto engine heaters, soft top, foldable wind screen. Curtain in front of the radiator that you can pull up from the inside. It also has pipe connectors and valves in front for externally heating the engine, ad an electric block heater as well. Dual batteries and 24 volt system.

My parents bought a long wheelbase station wagon of these new when it came out. Two years later, my mother did a u-turn with it without checking the rear view mirror on the driver’s side first. That was a mistake, because there was a tram coming up from behind. The tram‘s stopping distance was only marginally improved by the car’s contribution, but incredibly, my mother was unhurt and the car, although it was clearly a write-off, did still drive, although it did a bit better on left-hand corners than right-handers.
It was sold off to Africa, and I am quite certain that after a bit of artisanal bodywork, it was fit to carry on for a happy second life.

It's quite what happened to the Humvee: the moment Arnold showed up with it, the upper class and wannabes embraced it and it turned into a status symbol and people forgot about its roots.
The G-class is more or less the little brother of the Unimog and there's a great docu about its development at Puch (where it's manufactured) in Graz and testing in the 70ies. It has also been produced by Peugeot for the french army.
The last upgrade in fact changed a lot and while former models were based more or less on the 1979 construction, the current one is another development.

These aren't actually popular at all on the used car market, - mostly because we in the military thoroughly ruin them before they get sold as surplus; if they even get civilian inspections ever again at all without restauration work when we are done with them.
You gotta remember, in Germany when we register a vehicle it needs to pass a safety inspection; but in-service military vehicles are exempt because they follow different internal standards. SO buying surplus military vehicles is certainly a thing, but mostly for enthusiasts who actually are willing to put the effort into getting the cars street legal.

They have never been really cheap either but they are definitely not out of reach if you really want one.
