Boy this was a close call ... we splashed it a few weeks ago and had to put it back on the hard because the drip-less couplings started leaking when we put it in the water. We ended up having to remove and order new ones.

Hey there from Mannford Oklahoma. U tube brought your channel to me and I love it ! I lived in Key West probably before you were born. Was there in 1964-66. Went to Horace Obryant jr high for 7th and 8th grade. Our track and football field was right across the hwy from the boat docks. Saw many boats sunk or up on US 1 after the hurricanes. Complete Chaos during those times. There is a big cellphone tower at the northeast part of Sigsbee island and it is sitting almost exactly where our boat dock was then. Navy housing covered the whole island then and now that part of the island is a military only huge RV park. Our house area is now a big tent camping area. We snuck in there last year just to look around, don't tell anyone!!! My dad was in the Air Force then and was the base commander of the USAF base on Boca Chica key. That was the southern most fighter interceptor base in the US. They were flying the F 102 delta dagger aircraft at that time and were keeping an eye on Cuba as this was just after the Cuban missile crisis. That base is now a Navy training base for carrier based planes. We stayed at Boyds RV park last year and when the planes were flying it took me right back to my childhood there. Very interesting time of my life, I mowed lawns and bought a small flatbottom homemade sailboat that was 12 ft long with 2 ft tall sides. Some Navy guy and his son built it and covered the hull with fiberglass and painted it white. They probably got the plans from a popular mechanics magazine. The inside bottom was covered with Styrofoam panels and held in place with wooden slats on top to hold the Styrofoam in place, the boat was not capable of sinking even full of water. After turning it over a couple of times ( it had a wooden mast and a heavy canvas sail) I bought a horse and a half evinrude motor that was made in 1952. I paid for it by diving and catching lobster and selling tails at 3 for a buck on the island, after all I was no landlubber now and could make some money with my boat and motor!!! All this at 12 years old. I piloted that little boat all around Key West and up the keys far as I could go in a day. What great times and watching your channel takes me right back there. Im 71 years old now and will be in Key West toward the end of March this year, hope to look you up and shake your hand !
I live near Raleigh NC two hours inland. All I get are trailer boats. It's fun to watch all that goes on with the bigger boats and yachts. Maybe someday if I ever get the last kid launched I might semi retire and move to the beach and work on a few. Who knows might show up at your doorstep. I know all the details that you deal with in a days time and the attitudes of some of the customers (good and bad) there are plenty of both. It makes my head hurt ! Keep up the good work and make all the money you can while your health lasts. Jon Nooney...Carolina Marine Repair
You should be able to contact the USCG Auxiliary in Key West and they can inspect you boat free of charge. If you have all of the required safety equipment and pass inspection, they should give you an U.S. Coast Guard inspection sticker for 2025. I am a USCG Aux Vessel Examiner and regularly inspect boats all around the Charlotte NC area. Love your videos, your work ethic, and your honesty. It's a rarity these days!
Another great video, as a large boat owner (I’m not) those shaft seals would be something I’d prioritize often…as a trucking company owner the blue seal appears to be the exact same material as we use for air to air coupler and turbo coupler mating…very expensive yet worth it under extreme pressure.
3:25 - 16 hours that will save him WAY more time in the long run. When I'm doing maintenance stuff I HATE having to try to find things. The other thing that is important when you are mobile is having a way to pack up and double check that you aren't leaving something behind.
Your statement about kind comments reminded me that I had a boss one time tell me: “you are a kind person. I just won’t tell you what kind, but you are a kind person!” LOL
I have seen a tides seal do that exact same failure. it was due to lack of flow from the cooling water... I would run the engine with that line off the carrier and make sure water flows. that little hose is usually connected to a small bronze barbed elbow fitting somewhere on the engine or exhaust that can clog easily because of its small diameter.
So important to do a monthly exercise of everything on the boat. This goes for E/Gs and all kinds of equipment. If the owner/operator can not or will not do these tasks someone has to be the responsible adult and do them! If they have to hire a professional to do the tasks it will still be less expensive in the long run!
Just to clarify: An AGM battery is a lead acid battery with the electrolyte Absorbed by the Glass Mat (hence AGM) unlike a flooded cell lead acid (sometimes referred to as wet cell). Flooded. Cell are available in maintenance free or ones that you add water.
I just removed both shafts on my 50 sea ray, not fun…took a few days one was easy the other fought. I removed to check for true. I loosened coupling and stacked small flat bar stock (picture like stacked quarters) and with the original bolts and available extra length I slid the stack in and retightened the bolts with impact carefully tightening. And then undoing, adding more stock, repeating until it released. Using a torch at times to hopefully help. It worked.. anything that can be applied to the assembly to make it easier if it ever needs disassembly again? Antiseize? When I called the company that checks the shafts they asked if I wanted them to remove the shafts too. They didn’t seem enthusiastic to do that..I said I would they still wanted $800 per shaft to just put on the bench… No ..I went somewhere else…Good times…Ps I’m enjoying the content ..Great job
We tried lithium batteries in our equipment at work. Just couldn’t get them to last. Gave up and went back to older batteries. We can get 2-3 years out of them.
I thought lithium batteries were not reccomended for cranking purposes. Something to do with not being compatible with the engine charging system. Yamaha states do not use lithium for cranking. Has the technology changed. I see you have a merc.
Boat prep begins at the trailer. Lights tires wheel bearing brakes nuts bolts then motor fluids. impeller then general once over bilge and hoses safety gear vest flares fire extinguisher run it 30 minutes check electrical all your toys fish finder radar. Fill the tank send it
My understanding is that you cannot drop lithium in place of LA or AGM unless you are sure the alternator on the engine is able to regulate the charge properly, if not the alternator will be wrecked as the Lithium battery will ask for max current and alternators are not designed to charge at full output for long periods. Also the overheating of the alternator is a risk . An external regulator designed for Lithium is one option .
AZ it relates to these new batteries, it's just one more thing to malfunction. I'm old school and always felt that tried n true systems are best. KISS keep it simple stupid. Batteries with brains, digital steering, these things are great on paper but if they fail you're stuck. A couple years ago there was a sea trial gone wrong when at 80 knots the steering (digital) malfunction caused the motors to go hard to starboard and ended up being a fatality. Give me old school any day.
You can take the lipo's (lithiums) down to zero without damage, but you can't leave then at zero for a significant amount of time without damage. Zero state of charge that is, not zero volts! Thats my understanding, and I still haven't figured out what a "significant amount of time" is.
Lithium batteries' capacity can be drawn down to zero, but like all batteries, they will be damaged. Lithium battery discharge is recommended to be no less than 20% of the full capacity. 20% discharged = 1000 recharges, fully discharged = 200 recharges. Lithium batteries may be lighter than AGM (lead), but there are trade-offs.
6:07 They do self-discharge, up to 5%/mth depending on the cell grade, which the manufacturer would normally provide in the specifications. I'm not a fan of the electronics being built-in to batteries, like those are - it adds cost and complexity to each one. Monitoring can much more cost effectively be done externally for multi battery setups.
I see that you have fitted Lithium Ion batteries to your boat. Can I ask why you did not fit LiFeP04 Lithium batteries, as this type is much less susceptible to reaction with salt water and consequent fire. I have a 36 volt LiFeP04 battery in my 22ft aluminium boat, used exclusively for my Minnn Kota trolling motor. I would never use any other type of Lithium battery.
Shouldn't you be helping your hubby carry thoughts batteries 🤣🤣🤣 It's not like your gonna get your fingernails dirty. From the way it looks on camera you could of ate dinner out of those battery compartments 😝😝😝
In the spring of 2023, my mechanic replaced all the batteries on my Sedan Bridge. 9 total. It was before I went over for the season so I wasn’t on board to see what he installed. At the price I paid, I thought he put in sealed AGM’s. If I had been there I would have used LI batteries and not wet cell. I didn’t know that he replaced the batteries with wet cell until I was warming the engines up and was untying to leave the dock when one engine and then the other quit running. Turned out the batteries were dead. Took 6 gallons of water to refill them. I took the opportunity to replace the OEM on board charger with a new ProNautic 1230P charger. So far, I haven’t had to replace the wet cell batteries. When I do, I want the lithium iron batteries. So, what brand batteries are those you installed, and what is the estimated cost/battery?

For preventive mait, how often should the shaft seals be replaced?
The more you use the boat the more they wear.

Yes thanks for clarifying. We don’t recommend maintenance batteries cause owners don’t do it.
You should check mercury manual or dealer about lithium battery. New mercs might be ok.

We had something like that happen here some years ago think it was digital throttles. Boat ended up on the rocks luckily no fatalities.
Is there any preventive maintenance that can be done for the shafts if the boat is on the hard for a long time? Great video as always. Tks
Didn't think you can use a ACR on lithium batteries?
You need to use an ace/vsr.
Do your lithium batteries charge directly from the engine without a controller?
How about a video on that process?
