"So... these little women... how little are they?" sorry the way you said that reminded me of the episode of friends where joey reads little women and rachel reads the shining
charmoli apum khrime It’s the story of Rodion Raskolnikov, an ex-student in St Petersburg who believes that great people sometimes have to break the law and do bad things for overall good. He’s impoverished, alone and without money. He decides that he should kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her money, then descends into paranoia, disgust, nihilism and questions the nature of what he did and whether he should be punished. It’s hard to describe, that was quite a shoddy description, but it’s an exceptional book and Dostoyevsky’s writing is sublime.
The list of books: The Odyssey Dracula Frankenstein Villette Great expectations Tess of the D’Urbevilles Pride and prejudice Persuasion Northanger abbey Little women
I don’t really know why but I really like your rhetoric! I could listen to your voice talking about books for hours and hours straight. And I also enjoy the fact that the books you review are not as popular and well-known as those read and analysed by other booktubers. Thank you for recommending such good literary works😊
Not necessarily I had to study The Odyssey for my Classical Civilisation course and we didn't read The Illiad. The Odyssey it's self already shows us a brief understanding of key characters in The Illiad and what went on. But a bit of background information would help with the understanding of the hero's Odysseus encounters in the underworld but overall as long as they person has some understanding of Greek mythology it it totally fine to read without The Illiad.
I totally feel the pain of being a public school grad in literature classes lol. When I got to college I ended up surrounded by a lot of people with much fancier educations than mine, and oh man I had never heard of half of the books everyone took for granted we had already read. The upside of that, though, is that the literature I read in highschool was a lot more diverse. Seems like a lot of my classmates came from backgrounds where they were reading near exclusively old white men in school, and I hadn't. Also, as the person who always follows up with "Have you read Villette?" when someone says they love Jane Eyre, I'm glad you gave it a chance. My reason for asking that question all the time is just to get more people to read the book so I can have more conversations about it lol. Imo it's not just better than Jane Eyre, it's better than anything. Best book ever. I will die on that hill.
I think you're probably right about the diversity thing. If you spend all your time reading the books you're "supposed" to then you'll never get to half the books you need to. There are so many life lessons that old white men from Greece can't teach you.
I’m reading Little Women for the first time right now and I agree it is slow but at the same time it’s so great!! Im a little more than half way through and it has taken me a while but I’ve been loving it so definitely keep pushing through it!
I want to read it but like when I watch a movie before the book i just don’t like reading the book because when I read a book I want a movie afterwards because it’s like the book is coming to life so when it’s the other way it just doesn’t work for me
Hello, One of my favorite books so far this year is Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë. When you read it you won't regret, believe me. It's amazing! Some of your books are also in my list for 2020. Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
No offense to you, I personally really hate Wuthering Heights. Something about the characters all being unlikable, and the aspect of supernatural just makes this book super not for me.
@@bruhkent6895 I always felt bad for not liking wuthering heights its my least favourite Brontë novel... the characters were so unlikable that i couldn’t bring myself to enjoy the story. After rereading it this year, i actually started hating it ?? Idk
I love watching book vlogs!! And i think you’re the only one who has made videos on classics!! Love them ❤️ planning to finish villette soon, too. Im stuck at 41% though 🤦🏻♀️
I have also reread P&P a lot and love Frankenstein, yet have had Dracula sitting on my shelf for years and feel like a horror fraud. It creeped me out to hear some of my own thoughts come out of your mouth, but I think it’s a sign that I can trust your recommendations lol. Maybe I should try dusting off that copy of Dracula. I feel called out but I needed it. Subscribed. 😆
Great video. Im going throuh alot of my classics this year. Particularly finishing Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and starting Crime and Punishment by Froydo Dostoyevsky (which i highly recommend). I finished Dracula last year and Frankenstein a few years before. And i have to say, given the years both novels were written and published, you can see a dielectric tension between the novels. Each authors seems to agree, and disagree about alot of things. Particularly discussions about the progression of science, the anxieties of the time, the concept of faith, human nature and the sources of evil in parallel to good and where each resided. Fascinating read. I like to call them sibling books. Gothic masterpieces in spades. Another good one to look for is Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange case of Dr Jeckle and Mr. Hyde. It completes a appropriate trinity. Althouh i tend to forget simillar books that deserve its place among this house of works. It'll come to me. Lol happy reading.
the red/orange aestethic of your hair and makeup and your black clothes are bringing me back to my paramore era! and you are so enjoyable to watch. quirky and fun and not pretentious or snobbish!
I loved Frankenstein. I read it for my first time this past October and like you said the monster just wants someone. So good. I want to reread it again also.
Bleak House is actually so good just make sure to keep track of the characters' names and general situations (I studied Bleak House in college and like my professor literally printed out a separate worksheet for us to fill out because there are so many of them) and you'll be able to enjoy it.
I have at least two classics on my to-read list for this year: The Count of Monte Cristo and Crime and Punishment. I actually started reading Crime and Punishment first, but I was kind of bored with the beginning, so I put it on hold and moved on to the Count of Monte Cristo, which I'm finding pretty enjoyable.
The reason it says "an heroine" at 13:07 is because in England the "h" is silent. The "n" is meant to distinguish the first word from the second because having two vowel sounds next to each other would be awkward and difficult to say with an English accent. I also noticed things like that when I first read Pride and Prejudice! Also, I totally agree with the Little Women thing. Slow slice of life reads are best reserved for stressful times in your life, when you need a refuge from the chaos of life.
Definitely need to read all these classics. I used to love all the books we got assigned in school but haven't been reading like I want for a while. Hopefully can get back into it with one of these books :)
I loved Tess!!!! It reminds me a lot of Jane eyre. I read villette for my English Novel class last semester! I have been trying to read Dracula for a long time, but I really need to intentionally read it and finish this year! Great video!!
Okay, just discovered your channel and I just got to say 1. I loved everything in this video 2. You’re an absolute queen, I men so pretty and your personality is enchanting 3. Your humor is just...same. Just same.✨🌸📖
Villette is an excellent book. It takes a long time to read because of all the French you have to keep looking up in the back(at least in the version I read), but so worth the time. Charlotte’s descriptions are just mesmerizing in some parts.
I HIGHLY recommend my forever favorite classic in my whole life, im planning to read more classics because of this book and its The Picture of Dorian Gray i dont know if u read it but I recommend everyone idc
I'm surprised you haven't gotten into little women before, it is one of my all-time favs. Then again when I go back and reread certain books I know I loved I'm often surprised at how hard it is to get into it. Great video! I've written down a few of these that I haven't read and put them on my list too.
I love Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice, they’re my favourite books of all time with Wuthering Heights.I tried reading Dracula but I can never go beyond page 50 because I find it boring.I’m currently reading Tess and it’s going really well,Hardy’s writing is amazing.
I've been watching a lot of classic-book-related videos lately and came across this one in my recommendations and oh my gosh, I love your personality! I barely got into the video and I was like, yes! subscribing! I'm not a big re-reader either, but I'd like to re-read at last one book this year and that's Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. It's one of my favorite books and it's been, oh my, 8 or 9 years since I read it. It's being adapted and the film is supposed to be released on Netflix this year. I'd love to re-read it before it comes out, especially because I felt like re-reading it last year and didn't get to it. I love Dracula! It's not for everyone, especially if you can't stand some sexist things in it- that's at least from what I've gotten from other booktubers. I really liked it, though, and was glad to have finally read it considering it's Dracula! and considering how prevalent vampires are in pop culture now. Coincidentally enough, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey are the two Austen novels I have yet to read and would like to get to this year.
I totally agree. Frankenstein is one of my all time fav books of all time and of course Jane Eyre is on the top of my list. The book of my heart!Honestly, i've read it countless times
The odyssey is a must-read! I studied classics at uni (as in Ancient Greek and Latin texts) and there is so many literary references that would be lost on me if I hadn’t read the odyssey and Iliad
Hiya,I'm new to your channel so I'm kind of binge watching your videos :) I'm Greek so yes, I know the Odyssey because we had to study it at school as part of the ancient greek literature...I did enjoy the story but I think I would have prefered to read it in modern language so I could get lost in the story rather than having to translate all the way along! Dracula, I'm currently reading (50% into the story) and I'm loving it! And that comes from someone who is not a huge fan of horror...and who is not used to reading a ton of classics! It is definately a cool book to read! Frankenstein is on my TBR! :)
I came for the hair tutorial and stayed for the books haha! I grew up reading Dickens, Austen, Alcott, Bronte, I love them all so much! Little Women is definitely worth sticking with and I'd say for Dickens - don't start with Bleak House lord save us. I always tell people to start with Oliver Twist, but Great Expectation is so good too(albeit depressing - but what Dickens isn't?) I really need to read the Odyssey, so I might add that to my 2020 book list :)
I'm british and i studied in secondary, school classical history (which aged 11 i thought was to do with literature, i was wrong) it was ancient history, greek and roman and i was hooked. i had to study the odyssey in great detail and it was amazing, i still love it now
Haha you're so funny. Was only listening to the audio of your clip and you could be a comedian... or a radio jockey! And yes, Pride and Prejudice/Persuasion are my favourite Austen novels too! Not sure about the little leprechauns though haha
If you enjoy The Odyssey, read The Aeneid, on similar theme. Hardy is a wonderful writer. I'm currently reading Woodlanders. Then Far from the Madding Crowd (with two excellent film versions - Christie/ Mulligan).
I feel the same about Little Women.. I tried to read it before the movie but I only did maybe 3 chapters? haha but l loved the movie! You have a great list of classics 😉
An ANGEL! AN ICON! I love The Odyssey and will scream about it with you while you read. Also, I want to read all of these books (except Dickens), are we the same? Book club?
I have that same copy of Little Women! But yeah, the book took me from November-July when it typically takes me a couple days tops to finish a book sooo def a slow one lollll
If you want to stay along the Gothic stream, The Monk by Matthew Gregory Lewis is a trip. Also, I feel you would probably enjoy Vanity Fair by Thackeray. Great Expectations is a great novel, though I wish I could have read it as it was written - in periodicals. It takes a bit to get into it, but once connections start happening, it's beyond fantastic. Happy reading!
If you haven’t seen the film about Mary Shelley you definitely should! It’s in Netflix in Finland at least, not sure about the US. Haven’t actually read Frankenstein and had no interest in reading it before I saw the film. It brings insight to her writing and it gave me a totally different view of her book, similar to that you explained!
I want to read Classics too! This is a good Video to start with ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I've Read the Illiad... And i haven't read the Odyssey, and other classics but im planning to ❤️
aha we have so many books in common for our classics tbr this year - dracula, frankenstein, great expectations, persuasion, pride & prejudice AND northanger abbey lmao
My wife got me a huge anthology of the collected works of all the Bronte sisters the year we met and I haven't picked it up yet because it weighs at least 20lbs 😂 but now I need to so I can read Vilette! Jane Eyre is also one of my favorites.
"So... these little women... how little are they?" sorry the way you said that reminded me of the episode of friends where joey reads little women and rachel reads the shining
Mads Liddell I LOVE THAT EPISODE
😂😂 I love that episode.
Rachel with that potato masher thingy XD
do you want to put the book in the freezer?
It's the first thought that comes to mind whenever someone mentions little women to me😝😂
“if its better than jane eyre, why havent i heard of it???” i lost my mind
HAHAHAH I’m glad someone thought it was funny
I can wholeheartedly recommend Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment. I’ve read a lot of classics and it’s easily one of my favourites!
One of the best. Anything written by Dostoyevsky is incredible.
What is it about?
I definitely agree. If anyone decides to read it, please get the Constance Garnett translation. A bad translation can ruin the whole thing.

THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY !!!! I JUST READ IT AND I'M IN LOVE WITH OSCAR WILDE NOW
Really good book! My favorite my Oscar. I have 7 different copies of Dorian's story.🤷

@@katherinarenas8758 ooooh I feel
Frankenstein is literally the most angsty glorious gothic masterpiece of tortured souls and drama and gloom ever
Wow. I have to read it now lol
Picture of Dorian Gray is a must read. One of my favorite classics.
any time i hear "Jude" and "my heart was shattered" in one sentence, i get war flashbacks to A Little Life
Elizabeth Bennett is my favorite fictional book character of all time. Jo March is my second :)

Ooh i read dracula this year as well! I loved it! It‘s definitely a must read for gothic literature!

I am re-reading Persuasion at the moment - I bloody love it. Doesn’t beat P&P or Emma for me but it’s such a lovely read.
I want to read Classics too! This is a good Video to start with ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I've Read the Illiad...
OMG that Jane Austen book cover is BEAUTIFUL!!! Periwinkle dreams. Jealous beyond belief
Dracula is literally my favourite book ever (/w a grain of salt) and I can't wait to hear your opinion
Sounds like an interesting book! I'll try to pick it up! I have just read THE SLEEPER AND THE SPINDLE and NORSE MYTHOLOGY

I also loooooove Frankenstein!
it's so cute how you refer to your mother several times on the video
