If I remember correctly, he hadn't had a vocal coach in his early career. I assume that was pure talent. It's crazy to think about it. He could scream and in a moment he could sing beautifully. He was the best in his generation.

I know when he was younger in school he did theater as a kid and has said that if he didn't end up going the band route that he would have kept going for theater and would love to do a Broadway and acting in more movies but mostly Broadway. One of his dreams was that in his future that he'd be asked to do something for a Broadway show.

7:53 It was Song 20 of 25 on the setlist 🤯🤯.
He only just came off from a mini encore break after singing songs like Crawling, Faint, One Step closer right before that.
What a Legend being able to switch to this and on a high level.
I remember watching the livestream of this whole concert while it was happening in my bed with earpluggs in and this gave me so much goosebumps and came out of nowhere as they only did it once more in the LPU summit of that location in London with a dozen of fans whilst Chester was reading all the lyrics from the ground (Notice how he looks down in the third verse, its because hes reading the lyrics sheet as its THAT spontanious)
And im still BLOWN away 12 years later! I miss him so much

Chester said that he learned to sing by singing along with his favourite songs as a kid. Back then, he didn't know effects such as distortion and chorus existed and thought all the singers actually sounded like this raw, so he tried to mimick the way the recordings sound. That's why he could switch techniques so easily and maintain his power, he taught himself to naturally do effects.

I think you should perhaps check out more metal vocalists, as you mentioned you've been surprises by both Chester and David Draiman. There's a greeeat deal of talent needed to succeed as a vocalist in metal world, and a great deal of knowledge needed to last for years and years in it, and I honestly believe that people who aren't into metal just aren't aware of that.

No he didn't have any formal vocal training, as far as I'm aware. His previous band from when he was in high school, Grey Daze, was an early post-grunge band who were looking for a vocalist with that particular yarling style of singing...and he fit the bill just perfectly at the time. So he actually had to do a lot of work to strip away some of his habits he picked up from vocalists he idolized growing up (Eddie Vedder, Scott Weiland, Dave Gahan, to name a few) in order to find his true iconic voice.
On the other hand though, you _should_ check out the Grey Daze stuff. "What's In The Eye" is a good one to start with. It's not as technically perfect, but it's the rawest I think he ever sounded, and the fact that he came in sounding _that good_ at 15-20 years old is mindboggling!

Quick question - I’ve been partially deaf since early childhood, which has slowly gotten to the point I wear a hearing aid now. I’ve always sung and had perfect pitch before my hearing aid - I’m just a little unsure now at times.
What I’m wondering is, is it possible to sing without some nuances in hearing?
I’ve just got bone density foldback and I believe I sound good 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have good technique and rehearse with little songs all day every day. I just don’t want to lose my joy, but am afraid I don’t sound as good as I think I do 🤷🏼‍♀️

I think its important that you begin to consider how sound feels - begin to ask yourself how a great note feels in your body.. where does it vibrate etc.. because the feel of the sound can do WONDERS for helping you with nuance as your hearing shifts and changes. Record yourself singing and send it in for a student review with Singeo if you ever want feedback ! We've got free 7 day trial here: www.singeo.com/trial
