Welcome to your weekly UAS news update, we have 3 stories for you this week. An assaulted drone pilot wins in court, SkyeBrowse's latest update, and our yearly PSA about flying drones near wildfires! Let's get to it.
A drone pilot won a court case after being assaulted during a property shoot in Tucson, Arizona. Zach Zywiak, a real estate photographer, was attacked by a neighbor while operating his drone.
The court ruled in Zywiak's favor, dismissing the neighbor's claims and focusing on the physical assault. The person who attacked him claimed that Zywiak harassed him first, but the judge had a hard time believing that someone who was hired to film a million dollar listing would go out of their way to assault a neighbor.
Following the incident, Zywiak said he implemented new safety measures, including wearing a drone operator vest and using a 360-degree camera.
Next up, SkyeBrowse has announced major upgrades to its 3D modeling platform, significantly enhancing speed and quality. The updates include a 40% boost in loading speeds and improved interior mapping capabilities.
With SkyeBrowse, you can quickly process complex interior spaces from short videos rather than hundreds of photos. The platform now supports better 8K, 4K, and 2K textures, depending on the subscription tier.
If you're not familiar, SkyeBrowse is used by multiple verticals, including law enforcement, real estate, and emergency services, by making 3D modeling more efficient and accessible.
And now it's time for our yearly PSA regarding flying drones near wildfires. The shortest was to say this is: don't be that guy. But more seriously, if you fly your drone near firefighting operations, they will stop their operation, potentially leading to more acres burnt, houses burning down, or even lives lost.
Illegal drones disrupted firefighting efforts during a brush fire in Del Mar Heights, California on June 25. These operators forced the delay of three water drops, potentially worsening the fire. Authorities identified an individual launching drones during the operation, but it is unclear if charges will be filed. The fire burned 23 acres, forced evacuations, and was only 50% contained by the next morning.
Another similar story was reported out of Oregon at the Upper Applegate Fire in Jackson County 3 days earlier.
Again. Don't be that guy.
And yes, I know, DJI released an e-bike. I love mountain biking but this is not something we will cover on this channel...unless it starts flying. What would you like DJI to make next? An air fryer? An electric laundry basket? Perhaps a speed boat? Let us know in the comments.
And that's it. Hope you had a happy 4th of July, no live on Community today, have a good weekend and we'll see you on Monday for the live! - Наука
Thanks Greg! I want DJI to make a drone that is ban-proof. The DJI Jedi - “This is not the drone you are looking for”.
WINNER of best DJI tech idea comments award!!!!
I bought a reflective safety vest and it's made a huge difference in people not approaching me, it really makes you look official and you can even put on a hard hat and throw a couple of orange cones out for added effect if you like.
I've brought CAA licenced drone pilot high visibility vest. It definitely has helped me.
We had a wildfire near where I lived and while I went out there to take pictures I would never have considered flying a drone.
There was so much aerial activity and it was quite impressive.
The DJI eBike was developed mainly for the AG Drone market. It's a method of keeping an eye on the big 55+ pound drones on farm fields that are not flat. Over the hill stuff, BVLOS. It's the VO's ride and the DJI generators can charge them as fast as the drone can drain a battery so the eBike can run all day too, like an AGRI T40 or T50. SO, yes the eBike IS drone related...
Wow I didn’t know firefighters will stop their operations if a drone is flown near their general area. Makes sense, Good to know thank you! 💪🏼🙏🏼
I'm sorry, not being contentious, but I'm confused.
I don't see how it makes sense for them to stop operations for a drone.
(I mean, what if a bird flies by? Do they stop for that, too?)
@@MichaelByers13 Respectfully in my opinion, drones are much heavier than a bird, can fly much faster than a bird. Something that heavy could potentially
collide with firefighting aircraft, which can lead to severe damage, accidents, or even fatalities. Additionally, the presence of drones can disrupt the coordination and effectiveness of aerial firefighting efforts, delaying critical operations and potentially worsening the fire situation.
@@Bat_Flyer_PNW
Thank you! I wasn't envisioning the drone pilots willingly interfering with the firefighting operations, but I suppose it could happen. Better safe than sorry, right?
@@Bat_Flyer_PNW
A Phantom 4 pro with battery is 3 pounds.
Mallards are a medium to large dabbling duck. Typical for dabbling duck species, their body sits high out of the water while sitting or swimming. In flight their feet are tucked up to the body and the neck is stretched forward. Both sexes are similar in size ranging 2 to 3 pounds.
An average osprey weighs 3.5 pounds.
@@jerseyshoredroneservices225 A goose can be over 20 lbs.
Wow, a 360° camera? I have the body-cam type camera that was mentioned several months ago by a user on the P.I. community (which I use for other tasks besides when flying my drone).
A camera isn't gonna help much when the pilot is murdered for this equipment. This is why I fly armed, and I recommend everyone else does as well. (if legal in your state)
@@MrRamziaBAmen bro and here's to you 2nd amendment
I would like to see DJI start a subsidiary Company here in the U.S building their drones
I've brought a CAA (UK) licensed pliot high visibility vest it definitely has helped me. It's definitely worth the money.
How big an area around a wild fire is restricted? Do they file TFRs so that airaware will inform you? No, no desire to fly near a wild fire, but anytime there are rules with potential penalties attached, there should also be specifics, are there? If your house is a mile away from the wildfire, is it illegal to fly over your house to see what's going on? How about 2 miles, or 3, 4, 5, etc (assuming one even knows with any degree of accuracy how far the wildfire is)? At the risk of sounding blunt, not really interested in people's personal opinions on what someone 'should' or 'should not' do, just the legal specifics.
They always leave that out of stories like this.
There should be a TFR but if there's not then the airspace isn't restricted.
They love to use the terms "near" and "in the area" but they never define what that is.
Quick update. I checked the dashboard for WA State wildfires and crosschecked that against AirAware site. Seems that some of the wildfires have TFRs (or at least show as restricted airspace due to fire fighting). The bigger ones, that have existed longer, seem to have them but not sure if it is a matter of delay in filing them or if it's a matter of simply the ones with airborne fire fighting that get a restriction. So I would assume that 'legally' it's really no different than any other airspace, just a matter of there either is or is not a flight restriction in place. This would make sense, but would never count on the gov't doing things based on what makes sense.
@@RebelByNature
Good thinking to check that 👍
I'm thinking it's kinda like staying out of the way of manned aircraft in any other situation. Aircraft are used to fight wildfires, so don't fly your drone anywhere near one, or in any possible approach to one. It's not complicated.
@@DavidHarrisGRI Aircraft are used to fight some fires, but not all.
If it's like staying out of the way of manned aircraft in any other situation, which we need to do, then that suggests we should be able to ignore the whole wildfire discussion altogether and do what we otherwise have to do any way. Otherwise, if we have to contemplate wildfires and how 'near' to them we are, then we have to guess what 'near' means. It's kind of like a speed limit sign that say don't go too fast without giving a limit. Absent a TFR which gives you specific boundaries, the whole thing may not be complicated, but clearly entirely subjective.
I want a electric laundry basket 🧺
hahahahahaha. This right here is the goat technology
A want & need from DJI: Firmware update for a Bluetooth link between DJI MIC2 and leading brand Hearing Aids for the hearing impaired.
That would be nice, but I think the hearing aid manufacturers make their bluetooth work only with their own hardware. It might not be up to DJI and it might require unique hardware/software for each hearing aid manufacturer.
I would like to see you cover the DJI E-Bike in regards to how Drone pilots can use it to get to hard to get to locations maybe. 🤔🤷♂️
I have an FAA vest, GoPro and a voice recorder on all the time. I also have other goodies on me all the time to protect myself!
Great update Greg
Funny that you say that about an Air Fryer. I was excited to try the new Blackstone Portable Air Fryer. Unfortunately, it was crazy heavy, it can’t be used inside, if used outside must be covered when not in use, and nothing is dish washer safe. They swung and missed, I suspect trying to rush something to market before figuring out if it is what people will use.
Thanks for doing this videos
Hi Greg I would love to see DJI give pilots the ability to edit drone shoots in hyper lapse mode, so the pilot can pause half way through and make altitude adjustments or directional change in one Session instead of having to make multiple flights to do that
DJI will be in DRONE LIGHT SHOWS pretty soon . . .
I would like to see DJI make an air fryer. They really need to move into kitchen appliances.
Thanks for the warning. I guess I'll go to fly well-strapped.
A vest and camera are not adequate protection here in AZ ;)
You should have had me on when I got assaulted that really sucked and I had gnarly video of it happening.
LOL! How about a electric kayak motor. LOL
Wait Greg! You mean the new DJI bike doesn't fly? ;-) Happy weekend! T
I am using an Integra with a mini pro 3. Would like to see a glass panel avionic system similar to what is found in todays aircraft.
I really want DJI to release an update or a new controller that lets the new O4 drones output clean HDMI
Hard to believe drone operators don’t know to stay away from wildfires under administration. Throw the book at him/her unless there are mitigations: Twelve years old, mental case, etc. New DJI stuff? How about a flying washer/dryer combo to run between my three rent houses? Thanks Greg. Happy and safe holidays.
Will you do a coverage story when DJI releases its TELEPORTER (updated version of Star Trek "transporter")?
Of course if it requires FCC approval it will probably only be available in every other country on the planet.
I'd like to see DJI crank out non-RID firmware for the Mini 3 Pro
DJI should make a fixed wing FPV platform.
I'd like to they release the SDK support for the MINI4/4PRO. They stated would do it on the first half of 2024 but till today...
Would like to see a video in drones that follow you and what models you recommend on the low side in cost... At least auto-hover with 4K camera. I am new to drone flying and registered with the FAA a few weeks ago, They should take away gis license and fine him for the loss of property he caused.
,
I'm curious about this electric laundry basket
air fryer...LOL
Was there a TFR?
Define "near".
Interest in waterborne surface drones, on lakes and non-active waves, high winds. Sub surface is good idea but expensive, ( did I say Expensive) .
What legal coverage is carried by liability insurance, i.e., you mentioned in legal case. What policy situations have 'u' run across?
I've dealt with such in national publications covering cars and boats I've managed in the past. Would like to cover drones as you are doing.
🕵♂
😂 Nice close!!!
Good morning. Respectfully, what do I need to fly a DJI Air2S (mod drone) at any beach in United States?
Doesn't the E-bike have a built in camera?
DJI idea...
A robotic trunk monkey for defense against drone flyer assault.
A flying drone bike with a detachable high end camera. And waterproof. And AI somewhere in there so it can sell well. 😅
Does DJI make a cell phone? It seems like it would be a fairly easy move for them to make one for sale outside the U.S..
Yup I wear a body cam when I am flying jobs
Can you imagine if DJI started distributing video security doorbell systems that uploaded data through a cloud server? Would Congress try to ban video doorbells claiming the "Chinese are spying on us"?
Like to see DJI -or anyone-make an affordable Light Sports Plane or gyocopter. Almost impossible to find a LSA locally to train for an LSA pilot license. Still hoping MOSAIC might open the door someday….
I'll happily buy a DJI laundry drone
Fur lined sinks
Pilot Insitute is Family...
Can’t wait for the DJI portable pellet smoker so I can ride my DJI electric bike, while smoking a steak, while recording myself with my drone, action camera and recharging everything with my portable power station.
Okay can you please answer?
Can we legally fly DJI drones in the United States. China drones legal to fly
Yes you can, there is no band yet. It passed in the house and still has to pass through the senate. Watch Greg's video on the possible band.

Any news on the Federal House or Senate Drone bills?
We are in a Congressional recess at the moment. There may be updates next week once Congress gets back to D.C.
2:22 also can first responders file TFR as easy as they post on twitter? They did not file it till the morning for the 1st fire.
No. A TFR is an official FAA action. A First Responder Agency can certainly request a TFR for firefighting activities, but it's not automatic. It does take some time, but the FAA is usually pretty quick about putting them up for serious fires.
The can request one and they should if they don't want other aircrafts in a specific area.
If they don't do that they shouldn't blame others for being there...
In Dutchess County NYS, threats to shoot me or my commercial drone is sufficient to wear hi-vis hats and vest. I have RID, my Pilot Institute FAA number posted on my drone and a General Liability policy.
A DJI dog walker
Gotta be careful and stay strapped, let the morgue sort 'em out. No one will help you in time out there flying on your own.
I’m ready when I fly.
Talking about drones here not adding to escalation and shooting people.
@@melted_cheetah Don't attack people and they won't have to defend themselves.
Air fryer
DJI Flying toasters might be good... oh wait no DJI versions of a Kuerig... on second thought congress probably would ban it! 😜
It’s a shame that another site used the case as a possible example of supporting fear of attacks because of RID. This had NOTHING to do with RID. As much as anything, I’d like to hear how the pilot responded to the neighbor’s questions, before it turned physical. Did he try to deescalate, or was he steadfast and obstinate? Hopefully someone can get the trial transcript.
"...supporting fear of attacks because of RID." What do you mean? BTW - I'm with you on just believing what a drone operator says because he's part of "team drone" or team whatever. See it all the time - one side of an altercation and supposed to assume what happened before. The assault is wrong on it's own part - but other than that I'm no guessing angels and demons.
How polite, or not, the drone operator was, or whether he tried to to deescalate or not, is completely irrelevant legally and, imho, morally. Once someone goes hands on with someone, that is what matters. Let's not make excuses for people who are violent. I certainly agree that it's in a drone operator's best interest to try to calm a situation down, but if he was 'steadfast and obstinate' in flying the drone as he is entitled to do, that is no excuse for someone to be violent.
Respectfully disagree about RID. No, it is not 'directly' involved in this case. But it is a datapoint on the world of sometimes violent Karen's out there. That is the underlying basis for the objection to RID.
If RID related harassment was a thing then my guess is Greg and others would be posting about it. Where is it?
@@joetheairbusguy1813 Prevention is worth a pound of cure. It's the potential for enabling those who would harass to more easily locate the pilot that is the concern. I fly RIDless. Not interested in my location being broadcast even if it is fairly limited, arguably useless, in its current form, any more than I would want my car broadcasting its location. Luckily I just fly recreationally so I can just fly a mini 4 pro and avoid RID altogether.
I think congress should change the drone ban Name To
(Stefanis’s Drone UNEMPLOYMENT BILL BAN )
I’d like DJI to stop Geo-Fencing. One of my favorite places to fly and shoot sunsets over the lake and mountains is totally locked down with over lapping areas. I’ll fly elsewhere and will eventually change to an Autel
I am not interested in jumping through hoops anymore.
What class air space is it your flying in when this happens?
@@Bat_Flyer_PNW What is different about Autel?
@@JH-pt6ih I don’t know a whole lot about Autel other than the drones they build are built with no Geofencing. This means their drones do not automatically restrict flight in certain areas, giving operators more freedom to fly where they need to, provided they comply with local FAA regulations.
Then contact dji directly. leaving a random comment crying on a video won’t get you anywhere. Happy flying
@@Curtis-Randallcontacting DJI is a waste of time. They just do what they want to do.
Wearing a drone operators vest? Are you kidding? Better off carrying a gun.
I wanted to send a drone up recently when there was a fire start nearby. Of course I didn’t. 🥸
