    My 9 year old black lab had a double TPLO surgery about 14 months ago. She had torn both ACLs as well as one of her meniscus. I was apprehensive about putting her through such a big surgery but she was essentially lame and was in good health otherwise. I’m happy to report that the surgery was a success and she is back to around 90% of where she was before she got injured. The surgery was definitely a lifesaving one for her. That being said, the recovery was no joke. The first 2 - 3 weeks were miserable. She definitely didn’t recover as quickly as what I’ve seen portrayed in some of these videos. It was hard on her physically and both of us mentally but we got through it. I just wanted to share with others as I hadn’t read of anyone doing a double TPLO. My surgeon recommended it and I’m glad I agreed.

      Thank you for sharing your story! I’m glad to hear everything’s been going well with your black lab❤️It was hard enough dealing with the recovery for one knee and keeping my dog calm and in the pen for the first few weeks. I can’t imagine having to handle the recovery from the double TPLO surgery like that, so thank you for sharing your experience.

      We have a 9 year old coon hound. She had her first TPLO a year ago and we are on day 2 of the recovery from the second surgery. I cannot imagine how difficult it was to do a double. At least you only had to get through recovery once. Glad to hear your pup got her quality of life back.

    I used a device called the "Lick Sleeve" to replace the collar of shame normally used to protect the surgery site. It is reversible so it worked for both legs. She is in her second day of recovery on the second leg.

      Obsessed With Dogs I have a question! Today we are noticing a lot more swelling on ankle as well as lots of panting and crying. Did this happen with your pup? Also did you refrain her from laying on her bad leg? This is day 3 post op

      @@hernandezfam559 There was a lot of swelling on my dog's ankle for a few days. She honestly didn't pant or cry at all though, so you may want to call your vet. I felt like her pain meds made her not really cry. I didn't specifically stop her from laying on her bad leg, I just let her lay down how she was comfortable, but I did feel like she would usually lay down with her bad leg on top.

    So like you guys, I probably watched a lot of videos on this on RUclips, but I came across this company called lick sleeve. I have it on my dog now it’s reversible for both legs. If you have to have the other one done but you put it on them. it’s simple it saves you putting on that cone. My dog will not wear that cone. She doesn’t even go near her incision and it’s only for two weeks, but the lick sleeve is amazing

    Getting ready to have this done in a week or two with my 5 year old Abbey. She's a mixed breed mainly german short haired pointer. It'll be her first surgery of any kind. I'm hoping it goes well. My vet said it'll cost $3000 in all which includes them keeping her there the first week after surgery. I'm scared for my baby :( but I think it's the best thing to do for her since she doesn't put any weight hardly at all on her back leg. They said it's a partial tear CCL. She's SO ACTIVE

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  5 лет назад +1

      I hope Abbey has a perfect recovery! In my opinion, it honestly was worth it. Riley was limping so badly before the surgery and now she is at 5 months post-op and is doing much better. She still does baby her leg more than I was expecting, but I still do exercises with her to continue to encourage her to put more and more weight on that leg. She's walks really well, but it's when she is just standing still that she will kick her foot back and not put full weight on that leg. I'm hopeful that her leg will just continue to get stronger each month. Also, $3000 seems like a very fair price. Riley's surgery was $5000 and they didn't even keep her over for one night.

    • @jonsatvoutdoorchannel6686
      @jonsatvoutdoorchannel6686 5 лет назад

      ObsessedWith Dogs thanks for the reply. I hope she doesn’t have a limp when it’s all said and done. That would stink. My dog is so active so it’s going to be so hard keeping her still for however many weeks. 12 I think they said it was. They’ll keep her the first week and maybe longer (I have to pay so much per day after the first week). You have a beautiful dog btw. You can tell he loves you very much

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  Год назад

      Hi there, 4 flights of stairs will honestly be very hard for your dog to do after surgery, especially the first couple weeks after surgery. I personally would not even attempt the stairs the first few weeks after surgery. Instead, I would set up some sort of turf/grass area or puppy pad area inside my apartment where my dog could use the bathroom every day, instead of trying to get the dog down 4 flights of stairs and outside. Unless you’re able to carry the dog, but that seems like a heavy dog to carry down so many stairs.

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  5 месяцев назад

      I brought my dad with me to help me cause I was worried about carrying Riley by myself. I thought I would have to carry Riley out the door of the vet’s building and to my car, but I didn’t have to do that because she was able to walk/hop pretty well on three legs which I was very surprised about. So once we got to my car I just had to be able to pick her up and put her in. Riley weighed at least 75lbs but I was still able to lift her up and down by myself, although my dad did help and he did the lifting that day. I have an SUV so we put Riley into the trunk part of the SUV.
      I do think that one of the vet techs would help you lift your dog into the car when you’re leaving after surgery. But then, of course, you would have to do the lifting to get your dog out of the car once you got home. Whenever I had to lift Riley, I honestly felt like my adrenaline kicked in and helped me lift my heavy dog.

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  2 года назад +2

      I would say that I would have tried crate rest for longer, to see how the dog does, before getting the surgery so quickly. Overall I thought the procedure was worth it because I felt like Riley was able to walk better after the surgery than she was walking before the surgery, cause her limp was bad before the surgery. But I will say that her walking didn’t get as good after the surgery as I thought it would get. I felt like she always babied her surgery leg afterwards. Even when she was walking on the underwater treadmill during rehab, the doctors thought her range of motion was not as good as it should have been and as good as they typically see after this surgery. So I don’t know why Riley always babied her leg. I personally felt like I was diligent about doing rehab exercises and range of motion exercises with her every day. Riley just turned 9 years old a few days the surgery, so possibly younger dogs bounce back better and get their range of motion back better than older dogs do.

      She's a year and a half post-op now and she can walk well, but it does seem like her knee is stiff a lot. She doesn't have a very wide range of motion with that leg. The vet said she might technically have arthritis in the knee at this point, which could cause the stiffness. But other than her stiff knee, she's doing great for a 10 year old dog! I hope everything goes well with your dog and his recovery! It was tough going through the long recovery process with her, but I ultimately I feel like it was worth it.

      @@ObsessedWithDogs thank you so much for your video, and keeping up with comments /responses. My girl is 14 months and is booked in for surgery next week. Its things like stiffness and lack of range of motion that's making me want to do the CM route. So difficult

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  3 года назад

      @@teamtruth It's definitely tough to know what's the right thing to do in this situation. I think it does depend on how bad the CCL tear is, like a full tear would near surgery but maybe a partial tear could be managed with a brace and restricted movement for a few weeks? I don't know, but it is a hard decision. I wasn't expecting Riley to have this much stiffness in the joint after the surgery, especially because I was super diligent about doing all of her physical therapy exercises everyday. But I know that she's an old girl at this point, so I guess the stiffness could really be arthritis in the joint like the vet suggested. I hope everything goes well with your girl! It's tough that this happened to her at a young age, but hopefully she'll heal up nicely and recover well from this injury!

      Not sure, it sounds like your dog is babying the leg and trying to keep weight off of it. You could see what your vet thinks or what a dog physical therapist thinks, but they may suggest just to keep doing small exercises with your dog and encouraging the dog to put weight on the leg.

      Oh no! I’m wishing the best for you and your baby. My dog is almost one year post-op and she’s been doing great. She’s just about to turn 10 years old too. We don’t really play fetch anymore cause it’s not worth the risk of her possibly getting injured again, but she walks really well on her leg and I feel like the surgery was truly worth it.

    What does TPLO surgery cost? Do dogs have trouble going to the bathroom after this?

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  2 года назад

      Riley's TPLO surgery cost around $5k - $6k and thankfully my pet insurance covered a large bulk of the cost. Riley was still able to squat and go to the bathroom after the surgery although for the very first week I did use a sling under her belly to help give her support while she was squatting down.

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  3 года назад +2

      Keeping them in the pen for so long is definitely tough! Dogs seem to bounce back so quickly and just want to run and play even though they need to heal. I hope everything goes well with your dogs surgery and recovery!
      Riley is doing pretty well now. She's just about 2 years post-op now and almost 11 years old and she does seem stiff when walking and when standing up, and the vet thinks she might just have arthritis at this point. But she's still doing pretty well for an old lady.

    Our doberman is having this surgery done today. Are you using a fence playpen thing or is it a crate?

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  3 года назад +1

      I hope everything goes well during the recovery process! I personally used one of the fence playpen things instead of the crate, just so I could give my dog more room than a crate would give her. The playpen also enabled me to be able to lay in there with her and pet her while I was just watching TV in the living room.

    My dog has to go through 2 operations for both hind knees. I am worried about peeing as she barely can do it now :/

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  3 года назад +2

      I'm so sorry to hear that your dog will need to go through two operations. It will definitely be a tough few weeks caring for her, but using a sling or just getting a big towel that you can use as a sling under her belly will help you support the weight of her backside which will help to get her outside for bathroom breaks.

    • @Jjules-zo5fr
      @Jjules-zo5fr 3 года назад

      My boy hates the sling and after having him home a few hours he is still peeing himself and doesn’t understand why. That didn’t happen with the other leg last year and I hope he soon recovers enough to feel confident moving

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  3 года назад

      @@Jjules-zo5fr oh no! Hopefully he got better as the days went on. The sling might be more uncomfortable for male dogs. Riley didn't seem to mind it too much and I really only used the sling for the first week.

    How much time do you spend a day doing rehab?

    • @ObsessedWithDogs
      @ObsessedWithDogs  3 года назад

      I did her rehab exercises twice per day, morning and night. And it took me maybe 10 or 15 minutes both morning and night to work her through the list of rehab exercises she had to do each week. I also did little walks each day which were technically part of her rehab. Like for the first couple weeks you're supposed to start out with 5 minute walks, then 10 minutes, and you can gradually increase the length of the walks as the weeks go on and your dog heals up more and more.

      Riley was actually pretty good about going out and peeing that first week. I do think it took a couple days for her to first poop after surgery, due to the anesthesia meds she was on for the surgery.

      What did you want to know about TPLO surgery that you feel would be more useful? I’m happy to answer any questions about it. I also made a video called “How to prepare for TPLO surgery-12 Tips” if that helps you. When I was watching videos before my dog’s surgery, I thought it was quite useful to see how much the dog was putting weight on the leg and to see what to expect the incision to look like within the first week.

      Actually my dog had this surgery done 4 days ago and I found her video exceptionally (showing the steps to get outside) helpful including the links at the end of the description (I'm buying those mats, I had hardwood floors). I think it was wonderful that she took the time during a very stressful and expensive procedure to help those of us that need information and encouragement.

    I don’t know if you guys are gonna do it, but make sure you put rugs down. You can’t have him slipping with his back leg. It could reverse what you’re having done. I don’t know if you know that I’m just throwing this out there my dog just had it six days ago today’s 24 September. Good luck. I’m a week today with my TPO dog who’s doing?
