Yeah it was a superb time. Everything did look incredible, you are right. Speedball 2, Uridium 2, Syndicate, Lemmings, Turrican 2, Xenon II, etc. Some serious shit in there. I do reckon that things started getting a bit wank when the console ports started getting popular, and the SNES took a chunk out of things. Before that, it was an apex european art-intelligence collaboration the likes of which the world had never seen.
