It's nice to see some authentic Philippine dancing. I went to an American/Philipino school in Baguio and we were required to learn and perform the tinikling dance. I hated it at the time, but now that I am older I can appreciate it. It's really a beautiful dance.
THE popular notion is that the dance is inspired by the hopping steps of a little flightless bird called "Tikling." But some historians point out that it comes from the motions of peasant feet as they were whipped with spiny ("tinik") bamboo by cruel Spanish priests. Deft and timely movement of bloodied legs prevented more injury. It's more like dancing with a hail of bullets in Western lore. Those with the best moves were probably honored in the happy, heroic dance called "Tinikling." Being a dance of subjugation and punishment, Tinikling has long ceased to be the official national dance of the Philippines.
