She spend her days just human babies; Sleep, nap, cuddle, groomed, cared for, nap, fed, playing with her toys, playing in the water, and napping and cuddling again. I'm so happy for her that when this is the case, that she can't be rehabilitated into the wild, that she then is being allowed to bond with her cares like she would with her otter mom, and that she's shown love and care and not any attempts to hold back as to not let her get to attached to humans and less the otter life.
Go to the store to buy a bunch of baby toys... Cashier "is this for you baby?" Aquarius staff "nope it's for our baby otter!" Hope one day I will be saying that haha
What a sweet little baby. Isn't it amazing how all living creatures respond to kindness and nurturing. It makes all the difference. Thank you for sharing.
Even though I love my work and know I chose the right path, I sometimes think that I should've become a marine wildlife vet instead of a pet and housestock vet. But only when watching videos like these. Something about cute animals in need of care, just get to me in a indescribable way.
I'm just here, giggling like a cave troll at how cute this baby is. Also, idk how they manage to resist floating in the water with the babies like otters, so they have company. I love floating on my back in the ocean. I can't be the only one looool.
They are orphans, and this the best care they can get, she could never be released, hence the human contact, for whatever reason Luna will remain as a captive otter for her life, BUT if you watch some of the other videos then you will see that Luna will probably become a very successful surrogate mother helping raise other orphan sea otter pups that could be released. she is also capable of breeding so could go to other collections as part of a release breeding programme. I recognise that she should be in the wild, but this really is a great second best for her and thankfully she did not slip through the cracks was 'found, helped and has survived' and has a really bright future less than ideal, but still a worthy life.
I'm curious why guys gave it a toy like that. Was it just, "Hay, there you go little buddy!" or is there something associated with the development of the otter to the toy. Maybe something in the colors or shape.
Heya. I'm guessing that they keep track of her weight as to see if she's healthy or not. As for the toy, why not? Dogs like plushies that they can rip open, cats like anything oval that they can push around and chase after it. Every animal can be entertained by a toy, just as every human can. Hope that helps.
Sea otters are naturally smart creatures and in the wild they use tools like rocks. The purpose of the toy is probably to get the pup used to using and holding something to use, plus it can be comforting. The woman that was picking at her fur was grooming her. Sea otters have two layers of very thick fur, the top one being waterproof guard hairs which protects the bottom layer and keeps it warm. As a baby, the pup only has the one, soft down layer of fur because the waterproof layer hasn't grown in yet. It needs to be meticulously cared for and properly cleaned lest it become tangled and matted. Usually, a pup's mom would groom the pup, but since she was abandoned the woman is doing it instead. Weighing her is to just make sure she's at a healthy weight for age. From what I've read the pup was 2 lbs when she was rescued so 3.3 kg is a vast improvement on her health.
I watched the google hangout that they did. In it they say that she will not be released back into captivity. She was found abandoned off the central coast of California when she was most likely just a few hours hold. So she has imprinted on the humans that are caring for her and unfortunately humans can only teach them so much so she will not have all the qualities that she would learn in the wild.
This pup was given an official name shortly after she arrived at Shedd: Luna! The numbers are reference numbers, highlighting the volume of sea otters rescued by Monterey Bay Aquarium and underscoring their continued need for protection. When Luna first came to Shedd, we turned to the public to help vote on names for her.
I love how instinctively she knows how to wrap herself in "kelp". She is so precious it hurts.
That instinct is given by God.
I've chosen the wrong career path. This would be the greatest job ever!

When they gave the otter the toy while he was in the water he held onto it for dear life XD

oh. my. god.
Can you help us understand why she needs to be weighed? And likes a toy? And what was that lady picking out of the fur? Thank you.

Any updates on this little one?

You can't!

Sea puppy.
수달은 맑고 청정한물에서 산다는데 웬 욕조에 거뿜이 잔뜩이냐?
청소한다고 합성세제 녹은것아닐까
Why in the world can’t they just call her Daisy, or if it’s a boy Jack? It’s just silly pup 681, let’s not get too attached.
