  • This mod fixes slow and laggy wireless controllers and improves wifi connection. Perfect solution for home theaters and hiding your Playstation 4.
    With $18, 20 minutes, and some basic tools, you can save yourself from the frustration of controllers cutting out and acting erratically. This DIY mod will also improve your wifi connection, helping to increase download speeds and getting rid of in-game lag.
    The PS4 in this video is an original model from the initial launch of the system. After sound treating my office and relocating the PS4 into the closet for clean look, the system became unplayable because I couldn’t control the characters in games. The connection between the wireless controller and system was very weak and download speeds were laughable. This antenna mod extended the wireless range and solved all of my problems.

    Just did this upgrade, haven't thoroughly tested it yet but so far so good! Had a slight clearance issue with where I put my antenna (right where the gap between the power supply is), but that's minor. Just had to shut the cover a little harder 😅 Thanks for the great video 😊

      Follow up after a month of using it: My controller does still cut out occasionally even though I'm sitting right in front of the console (if I'm blocking line of sight to the console with my leg or something). At this point I'm thinking it's something related to the controller.
      The antenna did extend the range, and the cutting out is definitely improved over what it was before.
      Still very glad I did this upgrade.

    great video! I see you went with a 5 meter (16.4ft) coaxial cable... I need at least 20-25ft to reach my PS4 from where I'd like to stash the antenna. Do you think using a longer cable would introduce additional controller latency issues?

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews
      @swhammondbuildsreviews  4 года назад +1

      I'm not an engineer, but I don't think so. The gains you'll make by capturing the signal sooner, and then transmitting the signal down the length of your cable, in theory should be faster than airwave transmission (especially if there's obstacles like walls in your airwave path). I think you'd be more worried about signal degradation over the length of the cable, as opposed to latency. I can't remember if coaxial cable is balanced, but anything under 25 feet and I'd think you'd be okay. I would gamble that it would work for you.

      Hmm, odd. How's the health of your controllers? I've noticed that once I reach about 50% battery life, I start getting lagging issues with the new antenna setup. Before moving the PS4 into the closet, I could drain the batteries all the way down without lagging. Not sure how / why this would be the case, but that's what I've experienced. Obviously, as shown, with the PS4 in the closet and without the new antenna, it lagged all the time regardless of battery life. My controllers are old-originals from Day 1 launch of the system.

      I have a first generation PS4 that I bought when the system originally launched. With mine, I can only connect to 2.4GHz Wifi. The router in my house broadcasts both 5GHz and 2.4GHz, but my PS4 only displays the 2.4GHz signal as an option to connect to. If you're asking about 5G cell phone signal, I assume that it can't connect to that either-you'd have to run it through a hotspot broadcasting 2.4GHz Wifi. Hope that helps! SWH

    My Wifi connection is great, in fact I am able to connect to hotspots (free internet cafe connections outside my home) that my other devices cannot. My controllers lag so bad tho. I took my console to get serviced, when I got it back i noticed my controllers would lag. My router, cell phones etc are FAR away from my controller/console etc.
    Can I still get a shitty Bluetooth lag but have no WIFI issues from a faulty wire, seeing how they are both using the same wire?

      Hey Jayme, I'm not an expert but I had a similar experience. My wifi continued to work and connected to the router while within the closet, but the controllers lagged so bad that games were unplayable. After doing this mod, no laggy controllers and my wifi connection strength improved. For less than 10 bucks and only having to unscrew a couple of screws, I'd say it'd be worth a try.

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews
      @swhammondbuildsreviews  4 года назад

      That's a tough question to answer. It's subjective depending on your environment. My PS4 is located in a cabinet inside of a closet. Just adding the external antenna helped gain a better wifi signal, but I still experienced controller lag when the controller batteries lost about 50% of their charge. As you see toward the end of the video, I actually ran the antenna with coax cable into the room where I play. The antenna is about 15 feet from the actual machine, allowing it to capture the signal with no walls or barriers. It now works fantastic, as you would expect. In not so short, consider relocating your antenna with a cable extension if the new range doesn't fit your needs.

    • @guitargeek57
      @guitargeek57 4 года назад

      SW Hammond thanks! Ok, possible dumb question alert:
      Does adding the antenna extension cable prevent me from using a controller up close. I was going to use an HDMI switcher to send to two different TVs. One close, one far away - using the antenna to get controller signal to the TV further away.
      It should still work fine at close range, right?

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews
      @swhammondbuildsreviews  4 года назад

      @@guitargeek57 Hmm, not a dumb question at all! Probably? I would suggest adding a splitter to the coax cable and adding a second antenna where you need it. Possibly come out of the machine with a splitter, mount an antenna directly to it, then run the long length of cable to your other room with an antenna on that. The antenna I bought from Amazon actually came in a 2 pack, so it wouldn't cost any more other than buying a splitter. Just an idea?!
