DIY XERISCAPE BACKYARD PATIO: Backyard Makeover!!!

  • Over the 4th of July weekend we took on a new project to extend our patio. We decided to go with Xeriscaping ( not zeroscaping) instead of a deck. This allows us to plant more plants that are drought intolerant. In a future video we'll show you some of the plants we've been working on planting.
    Xeriscaping was also WAY cheaper than putting in a deck and we're very happy with the results. We spent a couple hundred bucks on everything!

    Pro tip: turn the rake over to spread the sand, leave a 2” gap between pavers (you’ll cover more ground for less) and fill the gaps with pea gravel. Nice job 👍🏻👍🏻

    Hey y’all how have these tiles settled? How did y’all get a slight slope away from the house for water drainage (if y’all did)? Would y’all do anything different? Do weed grow through? Lots of questions but a video update would be awesome just to update how it’s working out! I’m motivated after watching y’all work 💕🔥 thanks for sharing this!!!

      @diydwight7980  3 года назад +1

      Great idea for the video update! We'll work on putting that together over the next couple weeks. The tiles have settled a little, but not much at all. When we were leveling out the ground we pitched just a little off center away from the house to make sure water wouldn't sit and collect. Haven't had too many issues with weeds except for the grass trying to grow passed the edging we put in. If we could do anything different, maybe wait until fall? Haha, it was SUPER hot. Other than that, the only other thing would be maybe make it bigger. We could have gone out another 4 or 5ft and that would have been more usable for larger gatherings. Thanks for the awesome comment, glad you liked the video!

    Great Video I do have a question @ 2:55 mark Why did you place a board and make a line Then proceed to place pavers over top of it Thank you for your help in this video

    • @diydwight7980
      @diydwight7980  3 года назад +1

      Hi Tom, that was a board we placed to keep the sand fixed and level as we placed the first two rows of pavers. Then as you see we placed that other board on the outside to hold the edge there as well. Once the first two rows were down the foundation was firm so we could pull up that first board and lay the pavers on top. We eventually pulled up the outside board as well and replaced it with metal edging. You can check that out in the updated video we posted!

      Glad you love the patio! Sand and gravel were definitely not cheap, we got our's from Lowes and Home Depot while they were running a sale. We also had a Lowes coupon that knocked an additional $20 off. I would also look at local landscapers and Facebook Marketplace. I've found some great deals from them and a lot of landscape companies will sell direct if you ask.

    • @diydwight7980
      @diydwight7980  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! We did not apply any under our pavers and to be honest the paving sand, pavers, and crushed granite have done an excellent job and to be honest the only weeds we get are from seeds blown into the granite. Super easy to pull.

    Love this, how are the 24x24 pavers from Lowes holding up? Any cracks or bleaching from the sun?
    We are considering no gaps in the patio to prevent tripping with kids and instead using polymeric sand, which also helps with weeds.

    Awesome job! I just want to do the same project yours but i am not yet decided to do it now, my reason is to do one like that is to extend my concrete parking bay beside of my garage, the end of parking bay was soil,if i do with that yours? does it hold enough the stone paver if i park my car?

    • @diydwight7980
      @diydwight7980  3 года назад

      Hey Sherwin, I’m not sure if it’ll hold a parked car without breaking the pavers. I know they make pavers for that type of use, so maybe you just needed stronger thicker stones. We only put furniture on ours and we haven’t had a single one break but when we installed them we had 3 or so break apart in our hands and we had to return them and pick up new ones. They can be kind of fragile.

    Nice job! I’ve been wanting to do this to my back yard for a while. Since it’s been a little over a year, could you tell me how well they’ve held up so far? Since there was no ground packing or under framing, I was curious how the long term is going to hold up when I do this.

    • @diydwight7980
      @diydwight7980  4 года назад +4

      Hi Ashley, it has held up great, we recently bought a couple more bags of crushed granite to fill in the cracks but other than that it is in great shape! Weeds sometimes pop up but we spray them with a safe weed killer and pull them out to keep them at bay.

      @diydwight7980  3 года назад +1

      Hi @mmwalker5, It does not radiate heat at all. I can walk out on it barefoot. I believe that is because it is closer to white than black so it doesn't absorb the heat as much as asphalt does.

    • @diydwight7980
      @diydwight7980  3 года назад +1

      We're so glad you love it! February will be a much better month to do a project like that than in the heat of the summer like we did. That's a good question, we used 20 large 2ft x 2ft pavers, about 36 of the smaller pavers, over 20 bags of sand (each bag of sand covers around the same area as the large pavers) and probably close to 10 bags of granite. Honestly we really underestimated how much sand and granite we needed and had to make several additional trips to Lowes and Home Depot. In our experience whatever you think you need, add several more. You can always take it back if you don't end up using it, but it sucks to have to stop what you're doing in the middle of a project to get more material. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!!

    It looks fantastic, but you should have put cement around the edges to stop the sand escaping. And also, landscape fabric would have been helpful.

    • @diydwight7980
      @diydwight7980  2 года назад +1

      Landscape fabric definitely would have been helpful, but the sand isn’t moved much over the last few years. The dirt in our area is very clay heavy so there isn’t much room for it to shift and move around.

The side yard it's just sitting there looking boring..I want to use that space too..the side yard has a slope which iam thinking of removing or adding dirt to level. After that iam gonna lay down concrete to use that space too. However, now iam debating between gravel and concrete for the side yard space ( 15ft from house to fence and 60ft long.)...my only concern is gravel getting stuck under shoes and bringing it into the house...I have very nice plank vinyl flooring.. we won't be taking shoes off to go into house.
