- In do an upgrade to the stock suspension on the Monkey. I purchased a set of shocks from mnnthbx.com that are a direct replacments for the stock shocks and will support heavier riders. I also installed one of their rea fender eliminator kits.

You know what ad say" You meet the nicest people on a Honda" What a great little bike.
Great video! Getting a Monkey as my first bike at 66! Subscribed
Have rode bikes my entire life (early 60's in age), starting at a young age. Had a work place accident 9 years ago which made it impossible to ride big bikes, couldn't even really shift anymore (both arms, hands and legs are messed up), but couldn't shake my bike addiction. Purchased a TaoTao VIP scooter (was Leary of Chinese scooters), but I've been totally happy with it with no issues (150 cc motor which puts out approx. 10 HP, no shifting and can reach 55+ mph).
Brilliant. I'm in the UK and I've already got these shocks on order. Happened to see this pop up on RUclips and this now makes it incredibly simple. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to film this.
Those new back shocks look a lot better than the factory shocks and the back license's plate mount makes a huge improvement.
With the linkage on the shifter, ever point is an opportunity for play. A little play at each joint and you end up with a lot at the shift lever. The aftermarket shifter removes all the play. Of course the trade off is the stress on the shaft. Cool little bike. I learned to ride on a 1970 model 50cc with an auto clutch. Nice review.
If you look at it when he's holding it in place, if it mounts directly to the shaft coming out of the gear box, it would make the distance between the rearset and the shifter extremely long. It looks like it would almost add 50% the length compared to the stock shifter.
I just picked my 2023 yesterday. Its a gorgeous little bike. I have an 1800 wing but its just a pain for the neighborhood.
Awesome mod, Adam nice little camp explorer looking forward seeing how your Monkey evolves thanks for taking the time to share this with us.

Looks to be a well made, good quality set of shox, to my mind you've got them adjusted just about right for normal use. Ball mount on the lower fork leg works impressively well. At first I didn't see the ramp up onto the bench, I thought that you might snatch lift the bike up there. Nice video. Thanks for posting. Regards from Wales UK.
I thought he was going to lift it on. I mean he does have abom strength.
@@xenonram That's what I meant by 'snatch lift', as in weightlifting.
My personal experiance sugests that indirect linkage is less harsh on engine shaft, when falling. I have cracked cranck case, from shaft deflecting up and hitting case, twice (first time welded, second replaced). But then, I do crash more or less frequently, so it might not always be a problem.
One option I went with is the Shift Shaft support to get a little more support on that exposed engine shaft.
Caught me off guard and I was pleasantly surprised to see that 510 Oliver Drill Grinder in your shop. And the shaper… man, that’s awesome! Nice work on the Monkey.
I’m a 300 plus guy my self and just bought 2022 monkey this video helped me make my mind up on the shock up grade I was looking at thanks for the content.
Big men deserve to have fun too.👍😃 I bought a 2022 Honda ADV150 for now waiting to buy a new Monkey when ever my dealership gets one in . I’m partial to the Blue Monkey if available.👍
Man, you made my day. I just bought a Monkey because it's perfect for my van life existence. Sort of an impulse buy but to late now. I got worried because I to am a big guy (240) and started to worry that I was just to big for the bike. Def going to do the rear and front shocks. BTW, you did a super job of showing how to do everything. Many Thanks.
Damn that looks like fun. I bet you've sold a few Monkees for Honda with these vids. Reminds me of my little Honda 50cc I had as a kid. Countless hours of fun.
Barry Gerbracht Ohh, yeah. I had three of them and fun as hell.
I shared my Z50 on Instagram
Fun riding! That camera mount works pretty good, not much shake.
Honestly larger people probably aren't the expected demographic for a bike like this which is why the rear shocks are the way they are. I'm glad there is an aftermarket option to fill in the need!
Literally bought the bike today AND ordered the shocks n license plate mount. Great video!
Was that the Ohlins or the TB brand ?
Excellent and informative. You certainly answered my questions. Thank you for taking the time to provide us Monkey fans with important information.
That thing looks like a bunch of fun. Enjoy cruising around the shows Adam
Cool little bike. Nice to see a mature person working on it and not some scatter brained 18 year old. The builder of the shocks should provide instructions. You did a great job of figuring out how to correctly mount them. Well done.
great upgrades Adam , If you choose to do exhaust I recommend being careful .It will change the back pressure and mess with the fuel injection and can cause issues with the smooth idle and top end !! ENJOYED..
Great video mate, great footage, and very informative. I’m looking at shocks for my monkey right now as I feel it’s an essential upgrade. I went ahead and got the Yoshimura RS3 as my first upgrade but I feel now the suspension should have been my first upgrade. Cool video bro, I’ve subscribed, big love from UK 🇬🇧
I love the new shocks! Would love to get the exhaust but because I use it around the campgrounds and parks, I prefer to keep it quiet.
Abom Adventures totally understand, it’s a little loud. Great video, hope to see more monkey videos too.
That's a great little bike Adam. Enjoy
Hey! For front suspension, you have kit spring of Kitaco with different hardness. It's not very expensive. Sorry for my English, I'm French.
Seems to be a nice quiet and smooth riding bike.
Per your road test video, it looks like you have plenty of shock travel available. I think you got the adjustment dialed in correctly.
You can put pvc pipe spacers in front shocks to stiffen them up
yep done that works a treat
Reminds me of my '72 Honda Z50 I had as a kid. Same color too.
You’re very humble, I appreciated that about your video, thank you.
Awesome shocks Adam. I also really like the wheels on that bike. Its definitely a cool little ride.😎👍 looks like it has good power also.
It’s super fun!
Good video. Picking my monkey up this week. Going to change out the rear shocks as soon as I can.
Hey Adam, If you need to also stiffen up the front suspension on this bike, seeing you're a machinist, make up a couple of spacers to go into the fork tubes on top of the springs to make them a little stiffer. If you make them like 1 or 2 inches it will make quite a bit of a difference. That's what they do when they put on longer tubes to extend the front end. It would well to stiffen up your front end. Hope this helps - Later
Really cool looking bike. Looks like fun
Wow great mods Adam, looks like a very cool ride. Camera mounts work well, very quite bike👍👍👍
At 11:00 , you mounted the shocks on upside-down. The oil valve in the shock is important.
Wrong. Per the manufacturers website, these can be mounted either way.
Cool perspective with those camera mounts. I like the bike you chose thinking of getting one myself.
Awesome man. It would be nice to get replacement forks with stiffer springs. Look forward to seeing how it goes.
Very informative. Thanks for the insight. I was uncertain if those Honda Monkeys could handle someone over 200lbs (which I am!!!) but you showed they can, also it’s cool to see a shop with a Shaper.
Fun bikes, put a 14 tooth on the front improves starting off in soft, uphill etc conditions, speedo reads wrong tho, I need a shock upgrade
Nicely done and awesome action shots. Not sure if you received it but i tagged you on youtube in a vid i came across for the 14t front sprocket mod. Seems to really make better use of the power. Might be worth looking into.
The sprocket mods were something I was thinking about before I ever got this. I’ll check into them more as we go forward
Looks like they only moved about an inch or so. Good job.
I love this bike, I try to buy it the next months, I have a mega scooter, Kymco AK550 and I think is the best way for a city bike, excellent job my friend, keep going.
That’s too Perty too ride, boy does that bring back memories!
Great video man. Nice camera work and the step by step install was well done also. 👌
Adam happy to see you thinking about buying one of those monkeys but I’m more videos about the monkeys thank you Adam I watch all your machine work videos good work
for a second I thought you were going to pick the bike up and put it on your work bench. haha.
Thanks for this, I've been trying to figure out which way to go on the shocks and glad to see someone talking about the MNNTHBX options. One thing, watch out that tail tidy, it has a tendency to get the license plate a little to close to the rear tire (there's a video on my channel about this). I flattened out just a little to get raise up that clearance with no issues (and had also used the more expensive Yoshi eliminator as an option).
instaBlaster.
MNNTHBX mentions that a rear rack may not work with these shocks. Part of the rack uses the shock mounts as a mounting point. Doesn't look like much space left for the rack to mount to.
Didn't know you were back on bikes. Love these Monkeys. There's a great video about two guys riding Baja on Monkeys, if you haven't seen it!
I did watch that one! Good stuff
Motorcycle (street and dirt) suspension set up. Stand on the footpegs while holding the bars (Lean against a tree or wall with your shoulder). Bounce up and down on the pegs (you don't have to go crazy). The front and rear should be pretty close in movement and distance moved. Distance moved is spring rate, speed of movement (down is compression, up is rebound) is the dampening. This is only critical on performance and race bikes but will give you an idea if your suspension is massively out of adjustment.
I like it! The rear suspension was a good upgrade. The camera mounts are cool but the shots with it on the front had a close-focus issue so maybe not point it so straight down at the pavement. Go have some fun and make us some video while your doin it. It’s hard to envision how that new shifter would work. It doesn’t look like the new one is a replacement for the OEM. 😎👍👏
And for next week, Adam rolls out his V8 BossHoss for a wheelie bar upgrade. But seriously now, it looks like a fun little scoot to knock around town on. Although, I never imagined Adam on anything less than a Road King. They day is coming when my ElectraGlide will be too heavy to pick up, and I'll be downsizing. :-(
Heard you guys talking scooters on other video, we have a pcx 150 that is a great companion to monkey, easy to ride, possibly look into it! Its faster than monkey which my significant other enjoys 😃
Have fun! Great vids!
New shocks worked FLAWLESSLY‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸
Cool toy! Doesn't sound like a demented hornet either, as those little bikes used to back in the day.
Awesome. Just got this suspension online, thanks for the video and god bless.
If you are ever in the Tampa/clearwater area come ride with Tampa grom squad I would be so glad if you could come
That good stuff! 😁
Cool..i just got a monkey....and i just ordered the tbolt shocks..... thanks....
Great video and audio on that ride. Good work!
Watch John 5XR video. Shifter goes directly on shaft. You need a good snap-ring pliars!
Are you sure the shocks aren't upside down? (They are installed the other way in the Ohlins graphic). May not matter ...
I'm sure you've viewed the video by now, but those shocks look to be set just right at "half-way", Adam.
my opinion but i would leave the factory shifter as is.
Those plastic clips are called Plastic Rivets any body shop should have some . Great Video Adam
Lol
A couple more mods, then you and This Old Tony can ride off into to the sunset like Harley davidson and the Marlboro man. Lol
Looking great man 👍
Easy & inexpensive way to stiffen up that wimpy stock front end is to cut a cpl spacers for the top of the spring inside the fork and remove one cap at a time and give them some pre-load - we did that a lot in the 80's and 90's on a bunch of bikes (dirt AND street) I've used Thick walled Sched 80 PVC of the correct diameter to just fit inside the forks and be able to compress the springs - typically anywhere from 1 inch long to nearly 3 inch long? depending on how mushy they started and how stiff you want it to be?
Wow im a big guy to and i like that bike you got
So now you just have to order a big bore kit so you can do long rear wheel rides ;-)
Are these the TB (tbolt) Parts rear shocks that MNNTBX is selling? I can't find all black ones the ones I see are black springs with non-anodized aluminum. If you can post a link to the actual product, I'd appreciate it?
Hi Adam for the front, try other oil and and amount of oil as a cheap solution..
I like what you did but dont you need the license plates lite back on there? Its a law in Illinois, you may get a ticket
What year is your bike? I noted it has the polished ..."Guessing" Clear coated wheels.....The new ones are Black....I HATE freaking Black wheels on things...It Dumb's down really nice paint jobs.
it looks like a 2020 and this video as been posted on 28 janv. 2020
Hey Adam love the bike, I'm almost sure that the other locking ring at the bottom of the shock is used too. Like I said pretty sure. Matt C.
The lowest locking ring is to adjust the overall length of the shock. If you loosen that lowest lock nut you can turn the bottom eye in or out to adjust overall shock length as the eye tube has inside threads and the shock has outside threads.
I think the shifter is CNC billet, not forged
Hey Adam, nice lookin bike! A little note, if you tighten the adjustable nuts on the shocks, it only adjusts the ride height, it does not make the springs harder! For more info go visit Dave Moss on RUclips! Always a safe ride and the left hand to salute! Greetings from Germany
I don't think you understood Dave's video. The spanner nuts are in fact to increase spring tension. It helps offset the sag from the rider on the bike. While it does adjust ride height, it ALSO increases the spring tension by preloading the springs further before the rider mounts the bike. So, you're right and wrong.
My unsolicited advice for the day: I would put up an eight foot privacy fence in your backyard if it were up to me.
Adam one more mod for you, put a cup holder on so you can a beverage to drink while you are running around sightseeing
Not a problem 😎
i tried looking up that lic plate bracket could not find it for a monkey ?
Yoshimura makes one
I think you put the shocks on upside down.
At 6:55, you may not have needed spacers if you re-mounted the side marker light bracket.
thanx for the video , it's really help . Form Dubai.
Thank you for your Awesome video! Very Educational!
Looks good Adam 👍
What brand shocks? I don’t see those exact on the website. Thanks.
Cool beans!
Great video. Keep them coming!
You remove the linkage the shifter goes direct onto the shaft.
Adam I ran across a video of a 2019 upgrade of a honda monkey complaint that was taking too long to gain speed and top speed was only 50mph. Look up Chaparral motorsports --best honda monky upgrade. 14t counter shaft sprocket. it shows him changing within min. and a video of the hwy change to 70mph. Just thought you might want to check out
He's not going to be doing anywhere near 50 mph, let alone 70.
Great for camp grounds and swap meets, enjoy life is short
hello is the reliability of the monkey good? thank you
check your chain adj?
What’s the plan for the forks? Thanks
Goldwing next then Adam 👍👍🇬🇧
As you were tightening the bolts, I found myself saying “click” like AVE
Did you go "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHH" before the click though?
Very nice Adam. 👍
Did you get Abby one?
You could replace the damaged plastic rivet with one of the ones holding the toolbox lid on….until you buy a new one.
I can see that the preload setting on your stock suspensions are on the softest setting. If you bought these aftermarket shocks because of your weight, you should have tested the stock one with a harder setting first. Maybe you did not need these new ones at all...
Wrong! LOL!
What do you mean "wrong"? @8:50 I can see the notch set at the lowest point, which keeps the spring at its minimum compression. Am I seeing wrong?
Bora Yurtoren the stock shocks cranked all the way maybe handle 225 lbs. while that may be big in some circles it is not in others
@@borayurt66 look closer they are not adjustable, the "lugs" stop the bottom spring seat rotating.
Good video.. thanks for the info!
