      It is way more efficient to solve the underlying problem: extreme poverty and wealth inequality

    These are the children of 2008 when former president Correa opened the table of drug consumption, in a country with a high rate of illiteracy and poverty. Today they are adolescents and young people, today Ecuador sees the legacy of the bad political decisions of former Correa. We can only ask the Sacred Heart of Jesus in this year that we are celebrating 150 years of consecration to give us back peace in the streets.

      Don't let yourself be fooled. I'm ecuadorian living in Germany. There's a tolerance maximum in nearly every country of the world to differentiate a consumer (someone who needs rehabilitation) from a dealer. In most europeans countries this maximum is even higher than in Ecuador. And europeans take drugs much more often than latins. That's not the reason why this is happening at all. It's mainly to the obsession of the last goverments of not investing in security, intelligence and social invest. Apart from that, the previous president had also connection with the mafia throught his brother-in-law...

    Generally speaking, declaring war on the govt and the people and engaging in mass public terrorism and kidnappings isn't a good way to win the popular support of the people. I don't think the cartels are going to win this war, but we'll see.

    If it was so peaceful last few decades than the only explanation for this violence would be arriving of a young president which all these gangs saw as a weakness and opportunity to create chaos and get their bosses out from prison.

      I personally find funny when they totally change the accent to pronounce names, I don't see a problem with localized pronunciations of different languages. Not native English speaker btw, but don't see a problem with pronouncing Ecuador or Mexico for example with English phonetics.

      International human rights only pop up when they can identify an "oppressor" and "oppressed" classes, usually on the base of nationality or race. When infighting happens they are suspiciously absent or just release a few statements.

      As a Brazilian i can say that we majority of people JUST DONT KNOW HOW TO PROTEST, really people here think that everything can be solved passively.

      It's more a Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela problem. Arguably Paraguay. Most of the continent doesn't have cartels reaching out to the national level of politics, and rarely state wide. Don't get me wrong corruption and populism are rampart, but usually with sectors that make way more money than illegal drugs.
