I think since Allays are mob vote mobs, they get a disproportionate amount of hate and some people even call them useless. Idk what kind of mental gymnastics you have to go through to convince yourself that a mob that picks up items for you is useless, but they're really underutilized and I'm glad you're using them
Yeah, I think there are definitely people who dismiss the Allay out of spite because they wanted the Copper Golem, or whatever. The 'useless' criticism just rings so false at this point haha
It is definitely sad we can't get more than just one of the mobs-- I really wish they'd do something similar to the biome vote they did a while back and add all of them, but the vote decides who gets added first Tf2 did something even worse by promising an update for two of its 9 major characters and having a vote to decide who got it first, then walking it back quietly and not giving that update to the 2nd place character
I think they can be tricky to use, atleast for item sorting. They are fine for helping with collecting resources or farm outputs, but this utility is already available from hopper minecarts or picking up your own sand. Part of their initial sales pitch was as a way to sort non-stackable items, but because you can't link allays to specific noteblocks it greatly increases the complexity and pain of such a sorting system. (Ideally you link 1 allay to each noteblock and just dump all the books from villager trading in a pile in the middle and then the allays actually sort them into different chests.) While i won't call them useless, they are certainly disappointing.
First time I've ever seen these things, or even heard of them. It feels like they serve no real purpose that isn't already filled by something else, in most cases. That and they seem somewhat useless in at least 2 of the ways Pix showed that he could use them in this video. Maybe not "useless", but certainly seems not worth the effort. The farm, he would've been able to just walk over the items and pick them up (He had to go back the way they dropped anyways, since the allays can't replant) faster than they could come to him with the drops. And the Crystal Geode, everything floats to the top anyways, so he could just take 10 seconds to swim around the top and he would collect everything without needing one of these. And even in the video he says that the sniffer farm could just as well just have a hopper minecart running below, so that also feels like they're more of a gimmick than anything truly unique and useful. I imagine they might have some interesting properties with non-stackable items that you could use in farms and stuff though, since he said they only have the equivalent of 1 stack of "inventory", so in that way I can see them being useful. And they're cute, so that's always a plus.
I really appreciate you going over all the new stuff. I remember minecraft when the only mob was pigs. It really helps an old player out, who doesn't know any of the new mobs, learn how to play again! Thanks!
I love to use Allays to gather seaweed, amethyst shards, and sniffer seeds! They’re great for me bc I’m not great with automated farms lol (and they’re so cute!!!)
And I just had another thought: I’ve got a turtle beach where I breed a lot of turtles for their scutes. Having an allay gather the scutes would be _much_ easier than having to run / swim around the beach every few minutes looking for them on my own.
It's great to see Pix won't stop advocating for allay uses. As for minecart alignment: I recommend aligning against an open trapdoor. That way it covers the entire top surface of the active note block while still getting items into both hoppers below.
Never thought I'd have a use for Allay until mud blocks. I first used a pair of Allay along with 2 farmer villagers to create a wheat farm. One picks up seeds, one collects wheat. I went with an old school Etho silent NOR latch hopper clock to hit the note block every 25 seconds. Works great, and it doubles as a bone meal farm. After that I created the same system for a Scute farm, and then a Sniffer farm. Even had fun with my Allay breeding chamber. They looked bored, so I set up a 4'th collection system that outputs to a dropper. If I give them all the same item, it's a competition to see who gets the item circulating. Or I give each of them a different item, and then put the companion item in the system, and then they're all busy chasing their individual block.
When I first saw the Allays in Minecraft. I immediately got them out of the cages at the Pillager posts. Gave them an item each and took them back home with me. They are handy to have with you. They are so cute! They are like fairies, but look kinda like a wisps.
Ooohh I think every other content creator I found doesn't trust the allay path finding and so they build their allay powered farms very enclosed. You made me want to try and experiment playing with Alays and just trust the noteblock clock to keep them around.
I think the main issue is that flying mobs can be difficult to catch. Allays’ movement isn’t quite as random as bees or ghasts, but they can fly outside the player’s reach and they have a pretty small hitbox, so it can be frustrating trying to interact with them. I think that’s an unspoken reason why people tend to leave them in enclosed spaces.
Not sure if this is still an issue, but at first there was problems with them if the player used a nearby portal. (Also may have been only bedrock) I can't remember what the issue was, other than annoying 😂
@50sRockChick Good to know. I just set it up, and it seems pretty good, and none of them are lost so far. I'll try to afk near it to see if they wander and lose track of the noteblock. I can easily duplicate them so it's not a loss if this experiment fails.
I found one great use for mangrove leaves. Water log them and use them as the decking for bridges. The leaves are green enought to somewhat blend into most grass terrain and you can variate the bridge deck with muddy roots. gives you a different look.
i use them will building. have a few following you whit the different block you are using. when you brake a block and it fall down they go and fetch for you. REALLY useful building bridges or towers
I love Allays so much, lol. Ive been using them in my latest world to pick up the saplings and sticks from "regular" tree farming so i can just worry about getting the wood. Lose a lot less saplings that way! Great video as always! 💙
I had a dream yesterday about transporting allays from the little city across the river from my house over - well, we had to go under it - a precarious walking bridge. So it was fun to see this subject come up this morning!
I didn't know that Mangrove Roots could be composted. I just figured they were a wood-type item, like bamboo or a dead bush, so I just used them as fuel.
Pix 😊 Thank you very much for a great video. Fun and educational as usual 😊. I would like a slightly longer video in this series where you decorate and shape the base around the houses you have. They are so beautiful to look at and need to be surrounded by a cozy garden I think ❤
I never thought to use a minecart for the note block. My setup had the noteblock with a fence post above it and and then I dug a small moat around the block with water to take the stuff to a hopper. I think I want to combine those 2 ideas in some way though.
Love using the allays in my bamboo farm; it uses a flying machine to break the bamboo periodically but I found hopper minecarts would miss the odd bit of bamboo stuck ontop of the "stump" left to grow, so it wasn't lossless. Switching out my hopper minecart and rail system for a couple of allays and a noteblock collection mechanism fixed this issue! Thanks for the great episode Pix, I'm sure you'll find lots of uses for your new friends!
I found seven allays in a pillager cage once, was a great seed with a village, outpost, boat, and igloo in a perfect square. Got my allays to help me mine right off the bat.
Allay and Sniffer are the two mobs that I voted for from the last mob votes, they have special abilities but more importantly, for me, they are cute and can give worlds more lively. Armadillo on the other hand, is just voted because of the wolf armour and not for the mob itself.
I think armadillos are super cute and have a neat rolling up animation. Plus, savanahs needed something. Greay mob imo. Did you want the crab claw? How much of an extention do you think it would have given?
@@migs7220 I'm not into mobs abilities but more on the aesthetics of the mob so I choose Penguin. Because honestly, this year's mob candidates are not so great in terms of abilities compared to the last 2 years of the mob vote..
The allays are great for collecting turtle scutes while you afk, probably good for the seeds from sniffers too. Allays are good for random long term drops or drops that are far away, like tree drops.
I use allays to collect kelp I’ve harvested. So much easier this way. I do let them just throw the kelp to me rather than a collection system. Then I put all the kelp into my auto smelters and use the kelp blocks as fuel for my smokers or decorations elsewhere. :)
I know they sit in boats...do they sit in mine carts? You could have a cool little roller coaster set up for them to go around your base while you don't need them.
Do allays still deliver items to noteblocks if theres a block over it? That can be used to silence the notebook with a block that doesnt have collision like string
I'm pretty sure they have to hear the note block sound in order to 'pair' with it. Which is good in a way, because it prevents them throwing items at redstone contraptions that use note blocks for updates
I’m done with daily videos for now. It simply isn’t possible to keep up the pace now I’m approaching endgame and projects are becoming larger. 3 episodes per week is manageable without burning me out
@16:30 does the tick from the redstone clock lock the hopper through quasi connectivity? not that it would make that much of a difference since it is unlocked for more than enough time to get items into the composter
How many blocks away from your base was the mansion? The closest mansion in my world is like 12,000 blocks away, and is it just me or is that kinda crazy?
I think it’s just accidental based on world seed. I had one really close to spawn in Survival Guide 2 - closer than a village, IIRC - but this world has fewer of them. Perhaps it’s because I have some more extreme terrain? Either way, there should be more places for them to appear, considering they can also generate in meadows and cherry groves.
I tried this set up. It's not working for me. I put a chest down with a hopper feeding it from above. That part works. I put minecart with chest over hopper (took out rail) note block over minecart then used piston to push it down into the cart. When I drop anything on the noteblock it just sits there...? Any help?
