I think you've just given mumbo a new video idea, A sorting system (using allays) that is on a flying machine. That seems fun, I should try making one.
For anyone wondering: There have been a small number of changes to the Allay since Mumbo recorded this video. The main two that would affect how you build an Allay sorter are: Allays now pick up items every 3 seconds rather than 5. If multiple noteblocks are played at the same time, an Allay will bind to the nearest one, instead of all to the same one.
6:36 They recently fixed this in a snapshot. Now if something is on the same tick, if it affects something else then it's based on the closest updated thing. For example, if you put a line of note blocks on top of the allays and played them on the same tick, they would all be assigned to the note block closest to them, which would be right above them. But again you said this video might be late, so you could know that already.
the wool occlusion idea will still come in handy if you need to sort more than 15 items. You can even put the repeater on the wool block and it'll all line up perfectly.
When you pop over to Mumbo's Channel to see if there is a new video and realize its been three month, and find yourself like "dang, i hope he's doing alright".

Well, it's probably easier to build a normal nonstackable item filter anyways seeing how difficult it is to get Allays, especially if you're on a server.
@@RobinRhombus2 A 'normal nonstackable item filter' doesn't exist as far as anyone is aware, due to the way item sorters work. They use mechanics that require items to stack on top of other of the same items in hoppers, and once there is more than a certain number of items in the hopper, the hopper releases them due to some redstone logic (I believe they use a comparator). Since you can't stack nonstackable items, as it is in the name, without allays, to anyone's knowledge, it is impossible to automatically sort nonstackable items.

You know... A two hour timelaps of stone breaking would be something I could stick on in the background of my lab while the University think I'm working...
Instead of putting it on a timer, you should make the water loop back around so that if 1 of each item is put in the chest all of them will get picked up instead of having to wait 75 seconds
There is a risk of a trash items circling forever (assuming that it would loop back to hopper and starting dispenser), which kind of defeats the idea of sorting out the trash from valuable items. It would work if it was guaranteed that only items you want end up in the system, or if you're sorting all the trash out specifically on separate sorter. The lag is also something to be wary about, especially for the high throughput farms, and for those another thing that's important to note is that you would probably want to have multiple Allays sorting same item just to make it faster, and Allays being kind of hard to get in large quantities, attaching sorting system for non-sortable trash to this would be really costly. I think looping the items back makes sense for some farms or for manual unloading to storage, but in some cases it might not be worth the cost.
Edit3: IT IS OCTOBER 17TH AND HE RELEASED A VID YESTERDAY!!! Welcome back mumbo, hope you enjoyed your well deserved break :D Edit2: it is October 1st and he has not returned, I currently have no idea for when he will come back now, I am sorry. That being said, PLEASE don't feel obligated about providing 24/7 content, what matters is your health and you feeling your best! You're a huge inspiration to me, and burnout sucks (as an artist, I can confidently say that lol), but hopefully you'll feel better soon, and we'll all be here for you when you do! Miss ya, man!

They’re awesome. The allay is extremely useful for redstoners or just average players like me. I like an ascetically pleasing farm do I don’t use redstone with my crops. Allays will be awesome because you can just obliterate an entire field of crops and not even have to pick up a single item. I’m planning to use little drop stations in my gardens so the allays can do the collecting for me
Love this system. Sadly having this in a survival setting is going to be SOOO hard. I saw what mcskizzleman had to go through to rescue these little dudes and get them into a place where they were usable. It was not easy!
@@cybernetictech2391 every sensable person would want to do this. so its sad :( but i will sort the nonstackables out in general and will get some allays in by time...
There are only a few uses for them as many farms don't require a non stackable filter. Legit uses: 1. sorting bows for use as fuel 2. sorting gold/iron armor for smelting 3. sorting potions Unless I'm missing something there aren't other ideas that aren't excessively engineered.
Mumbo announced that currently he is prioritizing other things. He doesn't know when the next Minecraft video will be. That paired with the fact that he is going on a month-long bike trip that hasn't even started yet. I don't think that he is coming back. I suspect he'll have a video at some point announcing a temporary stepping away from Minecraft. Hopefully, he will eventually return, but I honestly doubt it. He seems to have a lot of other ambitions, and you can't blame the guy for doing what he wants. I just hope he announces one way or the other soon. The "will he/won't he" come back is the worst part. Hopefully, he'll say something at least before his month-long trip, but it will probably just to say bye for now.
@@30indrayudhdas28 thank you for sharing this information. I get really stressed when I don’t know what’s happening, no matter what it has to do with. I know it’s not definitely happening, but it still helps
Possible solution to the extended time it takes to sort them all: Have it do two passes. First, it sends a bunch of items at once, and any non-duplicates get picked up. They do a single pass around and then back into a hopper. Then, they do a second pass, but with the delay, to ensure all the rest get picked up.
if you think about it the rate stays the same in the long run, because you could send twice as many items at a time but then wait twice the amount of time before the next cycle
@@jabarzua sending bulk in first does increase the speed I think, in many cases. Unless you're sending multiple of the same item at a time. If the items are different, you get multiple items grabbed per pass through the system rather than just one.
keeping up with every single hermitcraft episode back in the day hit different. I used to work on my own projects in minecraft and just play him on a second monitor because his attitude towards the game and his fans and everyone around him makes you more productive and he's generally a really pleasant person to hear. He sometimes livestreamed really repetitive or boring tasks like digging huge holes so that he didn't make his actual episodes too boring, and I remember tuning in to him just mining for 6 hours straight and somehow this wonderful soul managed to keep thousands of people entertained. One of the greatest, purest, honest and likeable youtubers I know. Hope he's doing alright and he'll be back soon, we love you mumbo, each and every one of the 8.5 million of us
5:15 what would probably be more efficient is to just loop around any stray items back into the system. Because the chances of you getting the same non-stackable item back to back is slim and your current solution just slows down the speed of the system
I think by dropping it back into the system it will increase the chances of the same item ending up back to back. Exponentially getting more and more of that item. Maybe run the drops faster and when an item reaches the overflow, stop the main feed before running the overflow back through the system.
At first when the Alley was presented by Mojang, I was thinking it would just pick up some items that get dropped on automatic farms, and I wasn‘t really interested in the use of this mob. But this video absolutely changed my mind. The potential of the Alley is brilliant!
You can add a bubble elevator at the end with a water stream going the opposite way and dropping them back into the main stream for another way to counter the every 5 seconds rule
Yeah but.. if u had a long stream of water to sort a large amount of items, then it would take along time for the items to be sorted and they may despawn, especially if u had one alley per item with multiples of the same item going through the system and waiting to be sorted, but why would ur storage system be that long I guess xD
the real thing is it would be the same amount of efficient sorting things through multiple times and wating 5 seconds. its like taking forever to load up all the groceries on your arms for one trip, or taking several short trips.
@@That_Wise_Sage_ actually incorrect. Its 5 seconds for each individual alley. Say you had to sort mumbo's 6 sets of items again. If you sent ALL the items at once, 1 whole set would be picked up, then the rest gets recycled back into the system again. Meaning with the way it works, all 6 sets would be sorted in just 30 seconds. Mumbo added waaaaaayyyy too much time in there because he thought the 5 seconds was shared across all alley, and that was his mistake.

They are super rare and are only really useful on massive sorting systems with shulker boxes like in ilmangos recent furnace array video. The only other use is when sand mining which wasn’t difficult before and is still a very manual process. Nobody on hermitcraft really has that many non stackable items that would benefit from a system like this. So while they are cool they aren’t extremely valuable or game changing. What is more cool are the new changes to rail mechanics and minecarts.

I’m glad we are finally seeing sorting using the Allay! To make the system faster, what if you spit items out as fast as you can but the water stream goes in a loop so if the allay doesn’t pick it up the first time, it’ll pick it up when it comes back around.
The thing with the mob vote is that it was really builders vs Redstone engineers. Allays are so much better for Redstone as seen in this video while the copper cuties were more idealized for their potential in building. As a builder who wanted to copper golem, the allay helps with this sorta progression in the game that makes the game so much cooler. Allay was a good choice.
Mumbo don’t feel pressured to make every video better than the last. The problem with this system, is the absolute massive amount of lag it will cause on large scale, multiple users. You have multiple minecarts, filled with entities, holding specific items, waiting on redstone ticks to play music blocks.

I feel like you could probably increase the speed of the insertion significantly if you wanted to. Each Allay can handle 12 items per minute, so as long as you've got a way to resend items through your system you could probably let the system run at like 25% of the combined Allay capacity instead of having to wait 5 seconds per item and wasting 14 allay's worth of pickup speed.
Well yes but no. Let's say he wants to keep armor pieces but wants to throw away water buckets. Resending items (water buckets) would after some time overflow the system, as they are never destroyed nor stocked
this would need to be tested, but i think the problem with that would be, what would happen if you dump a bunch of diamond helmets in at once? if you have one item every 2.5 seconds (for easy numbers), and you throw in more than 120 helmets, then items will start to despawn. you could probably counteract this by having the items go back into a chest. but if you do that, then what’s gonna differentiate those items from items that aren’t in the filter, like if a dirt block somehow ends up in there? theoretically, it would be circulating around forever, and other items will need to wait 2.5 seconds for that dirt block to be dispensed before they could go.
@@matjea5018 good point. But you could have an alley for every item thats fed into the system and just destroy the ones you dont want, but i do se that getting tedeus with having to get like 15 extra allays just for item disposel
@@pathagas Assuming this is part of a larger sorting system, maybe you could filter out everything but the non-stackables before anything even reaches this section of the system, that way no dirt blocks would show up in this part of the system
Just some thoughts that came in mind. Do the Allays see if an item is enchanted or used a bit? That would be interesting for a gold farm. And how much lag do they make because they are entities.
You can remove the one item per 5 seconds thing (and thus the main redstone element ) by looping the water stream around so if they're missed they will have unlimited extra chances to be picked up.
With too much items this poses a risk of losing items when they are too long in the stream before being picked up. (despawning) The system Mumbo implemented is slow but prevents this. another way to circumvent this is by having the items picked up at the end end ejected back at the start by a hopper-dropper combination. A bigger problem with looping the items is how to implement the overflow chest.
I think this method is better in case of lag and losing items, with it being one single lane of traffic. Looping it would definitely create more issues than it’s worth. It’s slower but non-stackables *typically* come from farms slower anyway, so shouldn’t be an issue - unless you have some Ilmango levels of loot

I love how wool is an actual redstone mechanism now
Reminds me of the days when people colour coded their circuits before concrete
I think most people still use wool for their circuits? At least I do

Really? What does it do?
Honestly I still use wool for redstone. It just feels wrong to use concrete.
People use wool mainly still
Instead of putting it on a timer, you should make the water loop back around so that if 1 of each item is put in the chest all of them will get picked up instead of having to wait 75 seconds
That’s what I thought! A much easier solution. I think mumbo overcomplicated it
If you were to throw too many in you would run the risk of items despawning
add a dolphin so items will not despawn
@@orangukey at the end pick the leftover up in a hopper and dispense them again. no despawning then.

He is chilling and experiencing life. He will make videos whenever he wants too. Don't worry he is totally fine! :)
Mumbo tweeted a bit earlier that he has "loosely" September in mind when Minecraft content returns.

@@30indrayudhdas28 well off to grian until his return
Possible solution to the extended time it takes to sort them all:
Have it do two passes.
What if all of the bunch just so happen to be the same item? Then a third, fourth, or nth loop is needed and the item may despawn.
use multiple allays per item
Or just let the items loop infinitly until they despawn, like mumbo had in his season 6 (? the big globe) base iirc.
Dude I’m so happy for you. Just hearing how excited you are just, made my day. Hope your trip goes well mumbo man.

5:15 what would probably be more efficient is to just loop around any stray items back into the system. Because the chances of you getting the same non-stackable item back to back is slim and your current solution just slows down the speed of the system
I was thinking the same thing, but imagine the speed if you had 2 or 3 of them as well.
I think by dropping it back into the system it will increase the chances of the same item ending up back to back. Exponentially getting more and more of that item. Maybe run the drops faster and when an item reaches the overflow, stop the main feed before running the overflow back through the system.
@@leighahrens7875 that’s pretty smart.
Could make a snake like loop and at the end the items get taken back to the top (if all the system was stack upwards)

At first when the Alley was presented by Mojang, I was thinking it would just pick up some items that get dropped on automatic farms, and I wasn‘t really interested in the use of this mob. But this video absolutely changed my mind. The potential of the Alley is brilliant!
Well you can use while building, to get the material that falls from a talk building, or so.
Mumbo has completed his bike ride to Rome! 1500 miles and 7 countries
@@cheeselord2992 you can let a hopper pick them up and dispense them again
the real thing is it would be the same amount of efficient sorting things through multiple times and wating 5 seconds. its like taking forever to load up all the groceries on your arms for one trip, or taking several short trips.
The Allay is suddenly the most valuable mob on the HermitCraft server
Nah
They are super rare and are only really useful on massive sorting systems with shulker boxes like in ilmangos recent furnace array video. The only other use is when sand mining which wasn’t difficult before and is still a very manual process. Nobody on hermitcraft really has that many non stackable items that would benefit from a system like this. So while they are cool they aren’t extremely valuable or game changing. What is more cool are the new changes to rail mechanics and minecarts.

Have fun on your well deserved vacation. We’ll be ready for you return when your ready.
Let’s test that, shall we?
They don't care about enchants, but idk about durability
Mumbo. Are you ok?
You can remove the one item per 5 seconds thing (and thus the main redstone element ) by looping the water stream around so if they're missed they will have unlimited extra chances to be picked up.
With too much items this poses a risk of losing items when they are too long in the stream before being picked up. (despawning)
The system Mumbo implemented is slow but prevents this. another way to circumvent this is by having the items picked up at the end end ejected back at the start by a hopper-dropper combination.
