Its surreal to see luis while it was wrecking havoc on my island Antigua. Just sat on us for 2/3 days . It was like a freight train outside. And water water everywhere luis was so intense i saw it pushing water up hill

Thank you Jose for this great documentary! Gracias José, por este excelente documental. I was a sophomore at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC and I anxiously followed all these 1995 hurricanes from the distance, wishing I was in PR at the time. My Grandfather, Dad and Uncle were the ones that gave me the passion for weather, specially hurricanes. My Hurricane passion comes from 1979 monster Cat 5 hurricane David. Since I can remember that's the hurricane that defined my passion for hurricanes. My memories of it are the movie videos that my dad took with his 1970 movie camera and that I a watch countless of times as a kid. My first chase was hurricane George, 1998, by then I was a senior in college and I flew to PR to help my dad for the preparations. Sadly I lost all my video footage from hurricane George, thanks to a damaged hard disk. José, de Nuevo, Gracias for este documental.

Muchas gracias por tu comentario tan generoso y detallado, mi estimado David! My first hurricane experience was Hugo, and despite the fact that I was only 4 years old, I can glance thorough the event as it hit us during the morning hours of September 18, 1989. Hugo was my first hurricane, but 1995 was the "trigger" of me actively tracking storms. Prior to 1995 I was too young, but I can recall seeing the news of Andrew (1992) as it passed to our north, and two tropical storm threats that occurred in 1993 and 1994, with Cindy and Debby, respectively. I'm sorry about you losing your Georges footage; I had a camcorder that broke on me that very day! So I could only take pictures, but found a neighbor's video years later. These are featured in my Hurricane Georges minidocumentary, in case you haven't checked it out! Btw, it'd be awesome if you could unearth your dad's 1970s footage! That'd be quite the treasure trove of old-school storm footage!

great video brother! Love the narration! amazing how certain dates get us intrigued into our passions! now as you know I am a convective guy and the day that got me obsessed with learning was May 3rd 1999 but APR 27 2011 was the date I knew id become a chaser! Thanks again for this awesome video and keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for your very kind words man! I have a DVD somewhere of Jim Leonards chase footage from May 3rd 1999. There were tornadoes to pick and choose that day! Yeah there are definitely trigger dates for our passions. You’ll find chasers identifying with certain storms or dates. I remember April 27, 2011 as well, a truly incredible and tragic day. It makes sense that it twisted your wires!

Excellent documentary. Thank you for the video. Hurricane Marilyn mashed us up in st Thomas. Caused extreme damage. To concrete and cinder block structures. We in the Virgin Islands feel that the storm was far stronger than 110mph. And another thing to keep in mind is that the hurricane center estimates wind speeds at surface level and claim that wind speeds at higher elevations are stronger than the official forecast. Much of st Thomas is hilly and well above sea level. I really hope they analyze the data and reclassify the wind speeds of the storm.
But we survived and came together as a community. And we built back stronger. Building codes were modified and roofs were built to be anchored into a concrete ring beam and tied down with hurricane clips. The building codes helped tremendously with hurricane Irma. One thing with hurricane Marilyn was that the gusts of wind you would hear it down the street coming, and then when it hit your house the walls shook. Cinder block walls shaking. What a hurricane.

Thank you so much for commenting, and for sharing your experience from St. Thomas! I agree that Marylin must've been stronger than 110mph, and try to make that case in this video. The damage in St. Thomas was just incredible. Take care!
