I'm not afraid of getting old. It's just my body is not keeping up with the things I normally do. Weird that but I am recognizing certain limitations now and not pushing the envelope. Thank-you for your talk. It's good to know these things and accept them as natural as the sun sets and rises. ✌

What a privilege to grow old. My son passed at 24. My husband passed at 73. I am 72 now. I am healthy, fit, spend my time with good friends and travel a lot and have hobbies. Writing a book, a travel book as I travel. Loving my life after raising a large family. I take my nutrition as sacracent

I too am am an introvert and love living alone, what worries me though is who will look after any pets who might outlive me, and because I don't see friends for months at a time, would people even notice if I dropped dead in my home? I've decided that as I get older I will foster for an animal charity or do volunteer catsitting/dogwalking instead of having my own. This will have the advantage of letting others pay for pet food/bills, not tying me down and at the same time it will keep me in touch with like-minded people/charities who would notice if anything happened to me. This way I would still give time and love to animals but also have time and a little bit more money to do what I want, e.g. travelling, going out.

In some states they have senior call check where you get an automated call each day. If you don't answer after a certain number of calls they notify your designated contact person. I also love the idea of fostering.

good ideas, I'm in your same boat. Currently I have a 10 year Chi mix who I adore. He had a companion my Springer Spaniel but she passed 8 months ago. I had seriously considered getting a 10 month old adorable chihuahua pup someone had to be his new companion. But I am 65 and that pup could live 20 and out live me,or have to be put boarding should I have to have surgery or stay in a rehab center for weeks if I broke a hip etc. I've considered an older dog but then there is a likelihood of expensive Vet bills. So maybe I will foster....

Been there, done that. Mom was 93 when she passed and the last few years had been pretty rough for me also. I struggled with some guilt after she passed as I was pretty accepting of it coming by then. I was an only child of a divorced mom and she really taught me independence and street smarts. For that I will always be grateful. When the time comes for you, embrace it and give back to you.

I always assumed I would kill myself before I got old. Nope! Still here at 67, retired 4 1/2 years ago, divorced 42 years ago. Never bored, never lonely, love my life now. When co-workers asked me what I was going to do in retirement I told them "not a damn thing" and I have held true to that. 2020 lost 75 pounds, walk 5 miles a day, and strength training last 10 months. I may be getting older but it feels pretty good.

I wish I could let go of the look good thing. I do dysport for my wrinkles. I still get fillers and I’m depressed. I’m doomed. I still work So I try to look good. Only thing that worries me now is 1) how to navigate retirement. (hubs is already retired, not sure if I can stay working for another 7yrs, who should take soc sec first etc) and then 2) we are 100% alone, how to make plans for moving into lower maintenance housing when the time comes - dont want to get stuck not being able to downsize because we waited too long... I wouldnt mind downsizing soon (5yrs?) but we have 2 hunting dogs that would not appreciate apartment/condo living.. so we have to wait for them. Dont care too much about vanity, have plenty of hobbies so I wont be bored.

one thing that makes me feel better is the amazing progress being made each year in medicine so in 20 years time when I'm 86 treatments will be totally different for so many ailments
already knee replacements have improved massively - my cousin had an operation on both of her feet to completely remove arthritis and is now walking miles daily pain free
Stem cell research and the DNA genome research are making incredible discoveries on a molecular level
illness and being old go hand in hand for most people in their 80s today but in 20 years time I don't think it will be the case that **everyone** will be unavoidably ill throughout their last years
that's my belief and it may be wishful thinking! 🤞🤞But there IS a lot of science to back it up!

With regard to weight and food addiction (and it's always to processed foods full of sugar/fat/salt), what really helped me lose weight for good was to follow the sensible advice of the Physicians Committee (pcrm YT channel, they're a non-profit organisation). It is great for volume eaters because you can still eat very large amounts and still lose weight, you just eat more whole natural foods, like our grandmas used to eat (and people generally up to the 60s/70s). It means eating more fruit, veggies, wholegrains, legumes, mushrooms, squashes (e.g. Kabocha, butternut), tofu, small amounts of avocado, seeds and nuts. Be careful with oils, they are a processed food and very nutrient-poor, it's become fashionable to consume for example a lot of olive oil, you don't need it and you don't need any oils to cook/saute/roast/bake, just google how to do it, it's very easy and you wont miss the oil after a couple of days. Oils and other fats are the most fattening food on the planet, just skip those and you will lose weight and be able to maintain your healthy weight. You may not know that our taste buds renew every few 2-6 weeks, so you will quickly get used to new/healthier foods. Keep things simple and delicious, for example who doesn't like (sweet) potatoes, beans and veggies - just buy some frozen vegies, microwave the lot and you will have a healthy meal full of vitamins & minerals and very slimming (you can eat a big portion) and it's also cheaper than buying a processed ready meal.
Re: vanity, I agree you should probably not go over the top (I would never have any cosmetic procedures/surgery) but being well-groomed/dressed and generally looking after your appearance is very important for self-respect and self-confidence. People treat your better too if you look good, it shows you love and care for yourself. Good posture is important, being a healthy weight and dressing well are extremely important imo. You need to look in the mirror and be happy about your body or at least accept it (it took me ages to get to this point!) You may need a little make-up to avoid looking drained and grey. These things don't have to take more than a few minutes/half an hour a day, but feeling great about yourself is priceless and keeps you young, productive, and content imo. I never looked good for most of my life as I had terrible skin and weight problems (probably connected) and I only started becoming healthy in my mid-50s, four years ago. It's like getting a second chance at life and I've never looked or felt better. My mental health has greatly improved to, I now have a positive, grateful attitude and can cope better with stress. I consider losing weight and maintaining my slim weight a great achievement in my life, not to be underestimated. Channels I recommend for sensible, healthy weight loss: pcrm, Dr John McDougall's starch solution (google the free version), Chef AJ, Nutmeg Notebook, Healthy Emmie, Slim Vegan. Check out Dr Doug Lisle's The Pleasure Trap (about food addiction) and How to lose weight without losing your mind.
