Nature's Ugly Treat. The Pickering Mango.

  • Supermarkets only sell the prettiest, shiniest symmetrical shaped fruit. People won't buy "ugly" fruit so it makes no sense for the industry to try and sell it. As a result people are missing out on the best tasting fruit. Take the Pickering mango for example. With hints of coconut and honey the pickering is one of the best tasting mangos. The pickering also happens to be highly susceptible to anthracnose which scars up the skin and makes the fruit look bad. Pickering also has a non-symmetrical shape that turns people away. For that reason Pickering are not grown as a commercial crop. Backyard grower know however that it's one of the best and they have no problem eating ugly fruit.

I really enjoy your content! You're smart, open-minded, hardworking. I love watching these types of videos reviewing, talking about certain varieties of mango and avocado, and other exotic fruit. I love how you feature your wife and son, and other special guests or experts at grafting like Armando and the wrestler. And you updating on some grafting projects. The world needs more people like you! God bless you!

Dominica has a large variety of mangoes all over the place, when we eat mangoes we throw the seeds any where and they grow especially by the river side, some people would plant a tree in the yard, but mangoes back home grows all over the place.

I’ve had my Pickering mango for a little over a year now and I can’t recommend it enough for the backyard grower with small space. My tree was a 15 gallon when I bought it and after just one year in the ground it produced and held onto 13 fruit (the canopy is about 4x5 ft). I have neighbors with much bigger/older trees that didn’t even fruit year. Plus the Pickering tree has a semi-dwarf growing habit and can be maintained in the 6-10 ft range, which is great if you have a small yard and/or live in a marginal zone for growing Mangoes (North Tampa suburb 9B in my case) because you can more easily protect it from the cold. Not to mention Tom seems to approve of the fruit quality!

so good. I have one ready to go in the ground, about 2 months ago I repotted into 15 gallon and it sprouted from knee high to chest high. I can't wait to plant it.

Hey Tom, I've been growing a couple of avocado trees for grafting but was disappointed to find out that hass doesn't work well in South Florida. Do you have any recommendation with similar taste and texture that I can try instead? I'm looking at the scions on guacfarm but unfortunately I have no idea which to pick. I don't care much for the popular large, smooth skinned green ones the Cuban population loves that is very common in Miami, so I'm trying to avoid that.
Thanks and keep up the good work! I would love to get some of these specialty mangoes you mentioned but they are not available in the website yet!

Many people are missing out on tasty mangoes whenever they see that it looks ugly or disquisting. But I'm here missing out on these mangoes, because I live in Bulgaria, so, yeah. But you're probably missing out on delicious cherries and peaches that thrive where I live. There are a few figs here and there around my neighbourhood that don't ripen until August or September I believe, but still taste amazing. But you might also have a few fig trees, even though you haven't mentioned about them. I'm not sure if figs can handle whre you live in zone 10b. There're yellow cherries near our house in the village. I tried to pick as many of them as possible, but a lightning struck way too close for my comfort and ran off. I did taste these rare cherries and were amazing.

Is Tommy all you have right now for mangoes? I would sort of like to have a variety so I can see what I like, I really wish you had Orange Sherbet and some of the popular Zills varieties but I I think you said you don't, I would like to try some of the varieties you do have that are not lemon and probably not pineapple, but I like the ones that are sweet orange flavor and maybe some of the other flavors
. The mangoes they have gotten here so far this year are very small and most of the ones I've eaten so far have been stringy and most have been flavors I really don't like, I got some that were really pretty good last year and they were all around a pound up to about 2 pounds for about the price they are now and some were 48 to 68 cents each , they did have a bad place or two but I just cut those parts out. It looks like the mangoes this year are not getting sold and are going bad, I think they are all from Mexico so far.

@@SleepyLizard Hey there...hard to say. I live in the hot interior low desert area of Metro Phx. I have over 600 plants on my plot...but I am currently into more natives & other plants (incl. other fruit trees---many citrus, which we can grow here, and low chill stone fruits--etc.) than I currently do tropicals. Have had my current plot nearly 24 & 1/2 yrs. I once had 7 mango varieties---reduced that to just one--now back up to 2 newer ones. A Super Julie & a Rosigold. So a semi-dwarf and more dwarf varieties. Should fruit next yr. ! I had the Pickering for several yrs b4 succumbed largely to anthracnose. I thought it was a pretty good many.
