      We're waiting for the tarpon and Kings to return here. What size and length leader do you use? I use 10 feet of 60lb floral. Should I use 80#?

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад +4

      That'll work fine. I use 80# because I like to horse them in and release them as quick as possible. I use 40-60# when throwing plastics at them.

    I can't believe how they blend in with that clear water. Look at Steve with no fear, and they can sense it. I saw one angler start hammering away trying to keep jabbing a hammerhead, halph that size and that shark went from a little curious, to pissed. They're terortorial and will get their way. This big boy was just being nosy, probably saying what is this big blue thing, in my water. But because Steve didn't freak out, start jabbing it. This hammer was just being nosy, and sticking ariound for a while, Epic video, Steve.

    Steve you are a braver man than me! Yesterday I was crossing shark channel when a 8ft or so hammerhead popped up out of nowhere. I was in one of the hobie tandem kayaks by myself with no ballast in the other seating position and I was worried that he would tip me over so I hauled ass across the channel lol. I am primarily a fly fisherman so I was mainly looking for bonefish around Geiger key, I saw 3 groups of bonefish but only after I spooked them lol. The only thing I hooked was a 4 ft nurse shark but I forgot I only had 12lb tippet so obviously I lost it.

      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад +1

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing

      Always use a leader in saltwater. Loop knot with lures and live bait. Palomar for lighter weight leaders. Cinch knot for heavy leaders.

    Need really strong mono leaders the length of the shark with even stronger trace leaders to survive the teeth. One time I hooked on a bull about the same size and it didn't even run. I just reeled the Kayak to the Shark. It took five minutes. The fact this one bit your bait means to me at least that there is very little tarpon around. I've seen them straight up ignore live mullet when the tarpon are thick.

    That was pretty cool! I did notice, one of the underwater shots, your shark had a long line trailing him. I haven't ever caught a hammerhead. Caught lots of other sharks, though. The world record hammerhead shark was caught on a boat about the same size of your kayak, but much wider, i think off Palm Beach. Anyways good vid- exciting!

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад +3

      Yea, you could tell he associated food with boats. Lots of boats fish those outlets so constant easy food supply for him. Most people aren't rigged for a shark so hes probably eaten quite a few hooks.

    • @Wigglythegreat2
      @Wigglythegreat2 4 года назад

      @@lucasfff1370 Yes I understand what you are saying, but still it's barely above water so that a shark could easily come into contact with it. What if a shark went after a fish you were reeling in and got caught up. Even if it's teeth got caught on the net, it probably wouldn't be a good situation. Sharks do some unpredictable things at times. Like the videos of sharks getting caught up in the ropes on top of cages above the water line. Anyway, the whole idea of kayaking in the ocean is more than sketchy to begin with.

I've been closely inspected by several big Hammers of at least 11 feet and they looked much larger than that. First time I ever worked on a charter boat, the biggest hammer I've ever seen stole a Tinker mackerel basically out of my hands as I was getting ready to let it out on the kite.

    • @RikkiTikkiTavi290
