I've heard several live versions of this song, but this one is the most visceral. It's more like a duel than a song.

    • @88wildcat
      @88wildcat 3 месяца назад +9

You notice in the first chorus no matter how long Buckingham holds his note Nicks holds hers longer to drown him out. So in the second chorus after the if you don't love me now you will never love me again part, Buckinghams waits a second and instead of going to the we must never break the chain line he repeats the first part of the chorus. As a result not only does Nicks come in too early on her part but she starts singing the wrong line (well actually the right line) and has to stop herself. That was Buckingham's way of fighting back against Nicks basically trying to push him off the stage with her backup vocals of his song. This is a performance that doesn't need analysis by a vocal teacher. It is a performance that needs analysis by a psychologist.

Often times two singers will sing with each other in a song. In this case, they're singing AT each other.

The fact that Lindsey and Stevie have known each other personally and musically since they were 16 and 17 respectively, and they performed, wrote and produced music together for years in 2 different bands prior to joining FWM allows them to finish each other's sentences. Whether angry or happy with one another, they are absolutely in synch musically and performance wise. They feed off each other. The investment, emotion, love, pain, drama is real. They can play it up, but sometimes it takes a life of its own.
If you've not reacted to the 1997 live performances of Silver Springs or the accoustic Landslide just Lindsey and Stevie, you should. It transcends performance to experience.

Thanks for your analysis. This is another great song from the "Rumours" album. "The Chain" was written during the turmoil in all of their lives like you mentioned. Lindsay Buckingham & Stevie Nicks were ending their years long relationship, John & Christine McVie's marriage broke down, as did that of Mick Fleetwood & his wife Jenny Boyd. Their album "Rumours" (1977) is one of the best-selling albums in history. All the songs on it are great such as "Dreams", "Go Your Own Way", "Don't Stop", "You Make Loving Fun". "Second Hand News", "Gold Dust Woman" etc. Sadly Christine McVie passed away recently.

Stevie and Lindsey always let their feelings toward each other come out on stage. While I love this performance (Mac is my all time favorite band) the intensity is even stronger on the version of Silver springs from the concert video The dance. The end of that song is a truly if looks could kill moment from both of them.

As we say in Italy, they didn't stab each other for lack of time. The same thing happened with the Eagles and other groups. Drugs and alcohol completed the picture, but once on stage all their stories were thrown behind them and they produced masterpiece concerts and albums. It was the love for music and for this job that kept them going. Just my two cents.

Fleetwood Mac was the classic example of making hatred into a profitable business. While most bands break up, or leave the road or stop making albums FM just kept making more money, and ther audiences ate it up. They may be the picture in the phrasebook of "putting the fun in disfunctional." I also have to believe that Stevie named her tambourine Lindsey.

This is the only song in which all 5 members have writing credits. That iconic baseline in the middle from John McVie, he contributed that riff from what he'd written before. Same for all of them. You can find a beautiful Demo version of this song, too, sung by Stevie, accompanied by Lindsey. Almost nothing like this. It's mesmerizing. So the basis of this song was created well before they ever broke up, but the final version works very well with Stevie and Lindsey's relationship demise. To be clear, I've heard and read about various dates when they broke up, so could have been written because of that, or fine-tuned once their breakup was imminent and part of their story.

Its also worth remembering that the Mirage tour this is from, they were all pretty unhappy and ended the tour early. Booze and Coke (white powder not cola) were in copious use. If you watch "Sisters of the moon" - at the start Mick is fed booze by a roadie.
Not condoning/endorsing drug use but it was an additional factor here. As was famously said of them "They were doing more than the entire output of Bolivia"
Watch and compare to the 1997 version on "The Dance" Reunion (older, wiser, sober) . I saw them live in 2015, the emotion was still there but... yeah this was another level.

Stevie frequently hunts for eye contact with whomever she is singing with. An excellent excuse to check out her duet with Tom Petty. Stop Dragging My Heart Around.

The strangest thing about this performance is Lindsay Buckingham dressed like a door to door salesman in Alabama during the Great Depression.

The coca was coursing through Lindsey and Stevie especially for this show. The whole concert film was great!

If you want to hear Lindsay really vent, try reacting to "Not That Funny" from the same concert.

As always they put on a masterful performance despite, and fueled by, emotion. But some of their energy had to be fueled by their cocaine use during the period I'm thinking.

This performance is legendary. I knew I was gonna have a problem with a vocal coach reaction to this. You are great at what you do. But I just don't get how anyone can watch this for the FIRST TIME and interrupt it at crucial moments to casually (or even not so casually) comment on it. You only get one first listen/watch. Obviously, this is an 'it's me, it's not you' thing. And a perfectly legit criticism of my ridiculous ranting is that I knew what this was and I still came to see your reactions. I made it all the way to 'Yeah I know I'm stopping it in the middle of the big build up but....' and then started back without a rewind. I had to bail. Again, it's not you it's me. I just don't see how you guys and gals do it. If anyone had stopped this video during the first time I was watching it, there would have been a fight, LOL. Keep doing your thing and maybe I'll get over mine.

Less "analysis" because it is way too much and just an interrupting nuisance !!!
