The guitar player wrote this about his relationship with the female singer standing next to him (Stevie Nicks) - they weren’t married so not about divorce but about the demise of their relationship. The whole album that this came off of is fantastic. The bass player and the female playing piano were married and also going through a demise in their relationship and a lot of great music came out of the whole thing. Still amazing that they could wrote songs about each other and such sensitive topics and sing them with each other night after night on the road.

Their album "Rumours" (1977) has sold over 40 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums in history. All the songs on it are great. "Don't Stop", "You Make Loving Fun". "Second Hand News", "Gold Dust Woman", "The Chain" etc. Other songs from other albums are "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", "Rhiannon", "Landslide", "Tusk", "Think About Me", "Sara", "Hold Me", "Love In Store", "Gypsy", "Oh Diane" etc. Sadly Christine McVie passed away last year.

Biss! Fleetwood Mac!!! Yeahhhh! The "breakups" wre between the lead guitarist and blonde lead singer and the blonde keyboard, Christine and the bass player, John McVie (wearing the hat). Keyboardist and bass player were married and lead guitarist and blonde singer had been as couple for many many year.
The dark-haired guitarist with the sick guitare licks is Lindsey Buckingham and the blonde singer, dressed all in black with the tambourine, is Stevie Nicks. They are both amazing musical artists in their own right have had and do have amazing solo careers in the own right. Stevie is what one may call an "ICON" if you will and remains very popular even today.
With this specific line-up, they are and have been a very popular band since 1975 until around 1987 when they stopped making music all together. This performance from their come-back tour in 1997. As you can see, still very amazing live on stage, playing with passion and love for craft. The drummer, Mick Fleetwod, has been with them since the beginning when the band originally formed in 1967 I believe
Yeah, at the time, I"m sure a painful and bitter experience as all breakups are and can be but yeah, by this time, it is just sweet and can tell they call love one another and vibe so well as a whole
I could recommend so many songs for them Fleetwood Mac: **RHIANNON** **DREAMS** **DON'T STOP** and **GYPSY** For Stevie, I'd recommend **EDGE OF SEVENTEEN** **LEATHER AND LACE** **TALK TO ME** and **LANDSLIDE** .... You really can't go wrong with any of them! Love the reaction. Keep 'em coming! Cheers!!!

Rumours was a MASSIVE hit right from the start, everybody in the Western world knew who Fleetwood Mac was, and basically every song on the album was on the radio ALL the time. My favorite Mac song is 'You Make Loving Fun' (Because I like the sentiment 😏) And Mic Fleetwood the drummer looks like that in every live video I've seen. Lindsay Buckingham said that he tried to show Mick Fleetwood how he wanted him to play it on the drums, but Mick played it his own way and that's the way it wound up. I met Lindsey, he was always chasing business. When they disappeared I figured they got their slot in Nashville. BUT uh, they landed the job with FM. This was the #1 hit off Rumors. During the creation of it John(Bass) and Christine (keys) divorced. Mick the Drummer also went thru a divorce. Somehow they cranked out one of the biggest albums in history. This concert is a reunion in the mid 90s. They ended up staying together for many yrs since. Lindsey and Stevie's breakup was ugly and they fought in the studio and on stage. I can't think of a single bad song Fleetwood Mac recorded. The drummer is Mick Fleetwood who is a giant of a man, hence the large drumkit and the bassist is John McVie, hence the name Fleetwood Mac. The keyboardist is Christine McVie who married John. The female vocalist is Stevie Nicks who has one of the most glorious rock voices ever. The lead guitarist is Lindsey Buckingham, who has a most unusual guitar playing style but is an absolute virtuoso. He was in a relationship with Stevie and she joined the band with him (it was a deal breaker) when the previous lead guitarist, Peter Green, left owing to mental health problems. There was rarely a month went by without some kind of friction in the band but on stage you would never know it. They are, for me, one of top 10 bands of all time.

Crazy-looking guitar --Wooden acoustic/electric, Only seen one other artist use it ( Soul/funk singer Frankie Beverly ) But thier sound is crazy versatile. I recall around this time F.M. were reunited after breaking up to pursue solo projects in the 80's, The joy they show at playing together again is evident in this show/video.

The classic and most famous ineup of the group had just reunited at this time in 1997. The relationship breakups happened 20 years earlier. Around 1977 the personal relationship between Lindsey Buckingham (singing) and Stevie Nicks (the one in the middle) had come to an end, and the keyboardist Christine McVie and the bass player John McVie were divorcing at the same time. Drummer Mick Fleetwood's marriage was also ending at the time.

It sounds like you were expecting "The winner takes it all" from ABBA. Another story about a divorced couple remaining in the band. You can feel the pain in the vocals of a group that any other song, is upbit and uplifting.

This song was released in 1977 on the Rumours album - and this performance was in 1997 from "The Dance" live tour - so 20 years to work through the pain. Lindsey (lead guitar) and Stevie (lead vocals) were in a relationship that broke up during the Romours album. Christine (keyboards) and John (base guitar) were married and got divorced. Mick (drums) was also married and ended up divorced shortly after.

I don't usually get too upset about celebrities passing away - after all, we all have to go sometime - but Christine really hit me. FM were one of the first bands I really started to follow. They were the soundtrack to my university days. And seeing her here brings a tear to my eye all over again.
Having said that, this is my favourite song ever, I think - it has meaning for me. I don't think this was a particularly good recording - sounded a bit flat to me, maybe the mix was wrong. You really need to hear the studio version: Lyndsey's guitar, Mick Fleetwood's fantastic drumming.
On the other hand, with the studio version you don't get to see the looks that Lyndsey and Stevie are giving each other . . .
Do 'Isn't It Midnight' next, my favourite Christine song.

Hi Biss. Fleetwood Mac is a great group. Please stick around and check them out. This 1997 concert is a reunion concert/toûr. The band has been around since the 60s. Stevie Nicks & Linsay Buckingham joined band in 75. They were a couple, but never married. But most of the popular songs are about their break up. As is this song. Writen by Lindsey Buckingham to Stevie nicks there huge album, Rumors, 1977, were all songs about their break up, abd the divorce of christine and John Mccvie. Christine piano, keyboards, vocals. John bass guitar. Mick Fleetwood on drums. He had an affaire with Stevie as well. Christie had an affair with a band technician. She wrote a song about it too. You make loving fun. These people are wonderful song writers. Rumors is one of the best sellin albums of all time. So many songs to check out... The Chain, Dreams, gypsy, gold dust woman, landslide, silver springs, dont stop, big love, im so afaid, tusk, Rhiannon (live midnight special 1976). Do most of those songs live. You wont regret it. The show yoy just watched, The Dance is a great one to do it from. Silver springs, landslide, tusk for sure. Silver springs n Landslide will hit you....

Two bands in the same basic time period going through the same things-ish: Fleetwood Mac and ABBA. Two couples in each, two splits in each.
As for pop music, there's a tradition of making songs on sad or angry subjects and making it an upbeat song anyway.

  • @JohnHF1957

The song is not about Christine and John McVie's divorce (which Christine wrote "Don't Stop" about, then she wrote "You Make Loving Fun" about her affair with the band's lighting director) but written by Lindsey Buckingham about the break up of his relationship with Stevie Nicks (he also wrote "Second Hand News" about it). Nicks wrote "Dreams" about the break up The break up was very toxic by all accounts and you can see this in the way that Nicks and Buckingham look at each other during this performance. The band began in 1967, had some line up changes, Christine McVie joined in 1970 (after being in the band Chicken Shack, having one solo album and then leaving the music industry) and Nicks and Buckingham joined in late1974. Buckingham left the band just before a tour in 1987 after an argument, rejoined in 1997 and was fired in 2018 after another argument. Both Nicks and Christine McVie left the band and later rejoined. Fleetwood had a brief affair with Nicks. So, great music (both the original group and the mid 70s onwards version) and interesting band dynamics.

The only "sad song" on Rumours might be Songbird, by Christine (the keyboardist who died ladt year). But even that song reveals a lot of strength. For gloom, you'll have to look elsewhere.
