  • In 1989 I photographed parts of Leicester and have come back in 2024 , 35 years later, to see how things have changed, moving between images from 1989 and 2024. The Video will highlight some interesting features, provide a bit of history and include the High Street, St Martins, Guildhall, Town Hall, Albion Street, Butt Close Lane, Victorian Buildings, missing roads, demolished buildings, High Cross Shopping centre under construction and the Unitarian Chapel (Great Meeting).
Vintage signage from Holiday Inns and Youngs Cameras
Please stay to the end for all the detail, there has been a lot of change
I hope you enjoy, Please like and subscribe, thank you for watching Eclectic Experience change seen through images.
This is the first of 3 Then and Now videos on Leicester,
The pictures I took in 1989 are from all over the city so I have tried to group them together. In this video we will focus on
the more central area, in the next roughly around the castle and De Montfort University , and the third roughly around the Railway Station and going out to the Welford Road including the old cattle market.

I went to see Dead Poets Society in 1989 on its release. I was studying at the university in Leicester from 1988 to 1991 and then for my PGCE from 1992-1993. It is fascinating seeing the differences between 1989 and 2024. I hold Leicester in high regard. I have not been there for about twenty years. I know it is important to live in the moment but I am nostalgic for the eighties and would turn the clock back if I could, notwithstanding the fact that it was a tumultuous time politically and the Cold War was at its height. There are some beautiful buildings in Leicester. The people are friendly and down to earth, too. I have been thinking of going back to spend a couple of days there and I am sure I will before long.

Makes you realise how much pedestrianisation has improved our cities from the horrors of the 1970s.

The 1989 photos are of incredibly good quality, so much so that they don't actually look that old! If I had to guess, I'd have said they were from the late 90s/early 00s.

Thank you for the comment on the good quality. I have double checked and the 1989 photos were taken in November 1989. The photos are high quality scans of the negatives which is probably why they come across so well. Another check is what is showing at the Odeon, Roadhouse and the Dead Poets Society which were both released in 1989.

Nice video, thanks mate. I know Leicester very well indeed, so this is particularly interesting. The only thing that worries me is that 1989 doesn't seem that long ago...which shows me how quickly I've aged! Funny old place Leicester, but very lovable.

The pedestrianisation is horrible. Very rarely go into town now, fosse park is much better. The city just looks dirty constantly, beggars and tramps everywhere, people stopping you asking if you have a minute to talk about your energy or broadband. The city council is pretty useless and really dont invest in making the city beautiful, preferring to make it dull and drab
