Ben Elton? Who is he? How can an Entertainer/Comedian turn down Benny Hill? The fact that he still needs to mention Benny Hill in his own shows, years after Bennys passing, speaks for itself. Benny Hill is a cult comedian here in Germany. I was in Southamptons Hollybrook cemetery to visit Fred Fleets grave, the Titanic outlook, when I found Bennys grave by accident. This touched my heart and I came back again the next day to put down some flowers and say thank you to this man who gave me so many funny memories.
He was a writer on, The Young Ones and Black Adder. Which are two genre defining shows. He had a critically acclaimed sold-out UK tour in 2019. Benny Hill is also pretty good.

Before Benny's Show was cancelled and was at its Peak , Benny said to Henry that if this whole thing ended Tomorrow I would Die happy . I've had such a blessed and Wonderful Life , if it ends Tomorrow I have done everything I ever wanted to do . Far from being heartbroken and lonely as you suggest .Benny couldn't care less what idiots like Ben Elton thought . Benny would be appalled by the garbage that passes as Comedy nowadays .
I would watch the Benny Hill show way over the crap that they put on today. The so-called reality shows are way worse in the lewdness than the Benny Hill show ever did. Even as a kid, I knew this was innocent humor. Benny is and will always be a legend in comedy no matter what the haters say.

Benny was hilarious and cancelled mainly because of his apparent comedic content falling out of fashion, which was very British seaside post card naughty. Personally, I adored him and his show and I believe Benny’s Girls loved him too. A comedic genius.

When I was a young girl, I didn't quite understand what was so funny about him. I liked sketches, but didn't understand the whole half naked woman thing. The older I got, I finally got the jokes and loved all the episodes.

This show was an integral part of my teenage years. Society can be so full of shit with their criticisms and insecurities. My generation was one of those that rebelled against everything we grew up with, everything that helped normalize us as we grew into adults. Kids after us had to grasp at straws.

The British have 2 completely opposite kinds of humor: the extremely intelligent and subtle type like Yes Minister and the infantile and often vulgar type like The Benny Hill Show. Both kind had and have a following. I personally couldn't stand Benny Hill but I know many people loved his show.

Lets just stand back for a moment, If you ask people who is Ben Elton and what does he do? I am sure you would get a thundering silence! On the other hand if you asked the same people who was Benny Hill and what did he do> you would be drowned with the volume of reply's. IMHO Ben Elton at the time was a jealous and Sad loud mouth. When Ben Elton is forgotten many years from now they will still be talking about Benny Hill. And as for Thames Television it went down the Crapper so there is some justice in this world.
From my perspective I liked the Benny Hill show when I was young, but later it felt a bit dated and repetitive and in the 80s. I moved on to things like the Young ones and spitting image. By today's standard it would be considered inappropriate, but it was not made today or for today's audience. One could argue that he failed to change with the times and adjust his style of humor to the new sensibilities. But all that doesn't change the fact he was on of the great comedians with a huge impact in his time. And the hate he got, especially from some fellow comedians was undeserved.
The Benny Hill show was cancelled in 1989. When he was 65. Ben Elton is now about the same age. Born in 1958 or 1959. Maybe it is time he was cancelled!

Benny Hill is a classic, while Ben Elton helped redefine comedy. Both are great. (Also, as a kid, I mostly watched Benny, because of all the rampant T&A on his show.)
The reality is all forms of comedy come and go in and out of public favor over time, because comedy is absolutely contextualized by the time period in which it is being created. It is a commentary on the social norms, poking fun at social absurdities, amplified for ridicule, at itself and its topic. In the end, if Benny Hill was guilty of anything, it was that he was a capable performer that delivered a sanitized enough for the censors at the time burlesque show to family hour television when no one else had figured it out.
I definitely love Benny Hill show. I remember watching him all the time when I was a kid. We loved it because kids were not supposed to watch it. Whoever had problem with Benny was simply a hateful person.
I’m sure he was hated on in his country because he’s the only actor from Britain to become a huge star in America … and he is the only comedian that is loved over here. We usually don’t like or care for British comedy or humor.
In the 80's it was our sunday afternoon (British Humor) quater time in France this man make us laugh so many time, we also have the French equivalent with Stéphane Collaro and the Collaro Show and the famous Coco Girl with there saturday night strip tease ... The reality is all forms of comedy come and go in and out of public favor over time, because comedy is absolutely contextualized by the time period in which it is being created. It is a commentary on the social norms, poking fun at social absurdities, amplified for ridicule, at itself and its topic.
In the end, if Benny Hill was guilty of anything, it was that he was a capable performer that delivered a sanitized enough for the censors at the time burlesque show to family hour television when no one else had figured it out.

I definitely love Benny Hill show. I remember watching him all the time when I was a kid. We loved it because kids were not supposed to watch it. Whoever had problem with Benny was simply a hateful person.

I’m sure he was hated on in his country because he’s the only actor from Britain to become a huge star in America … and he is the only comedian that is loved over here. We usually don’t like or care for British comedy or humor.

In the 80's it was our sunday afternoon (British Humor) quater time in France this man make us laugh so many time, we also have the French equivalent with Stéphane Collaro and the Collaro Show and the famous Coco Girl with there saturday night strip tease ... Ah what a time to be alive everything was simplier and more goofy back then ...

Benny Hill was awesome and those who criticized him and the show were just haters and talentless hacks. The guy was a great comedian and it sucks they don't make shows like this any more.

Any person who watched Benny Hill and became sexist or racist or whatever other thing they claim Benny;s humour caused were that way before. It was comedy. Any person, be it race or gender or sexuality that was the butt of a joke was more often come out on top in another sketch.
And any person who says that Benny would rip the clothes of a woman then chase them around have never actually watched his shows.
