Why I Quit the "Curly Girl" Method

  • 👩🏻‍🦱 While the "curly girl" method can be great for helping people embrace their curls, it has its own set of problems. I used the "curly girl" method for many years, and during that time my hair never grew past a certain length and the ends were stringy and uneven. One of the main issues I have with the "curly girl" method, is the recommended practice of wet-detangling your hair. I have since learned that while wet-detangling can create crisp curls, it also greatly increases the rate of hair breakage which is what led to my own hair seeming to never grow.

I don't think that's quite true. The curly girl method recommends using a ton of conditioner to co wash and condition hair. I unfortunately haven't had much success as it made my hair droopy and sad looking lol. I know it works well for others and if it works then no reason to break what isn't broken

@@audraburke1526 No, it doesn't. It recommends avoiding sulfates and silicones, along with drying alcohols. In my years of using the method I have never seen an across the board "rule" that "a ton of conditioner" be used. In fact, I have seen many sources say that co-washing isn't for all hair types, and that some definitely need a mild cleanser. That being said, I don't get the hate that is projected by people who felt the method wasn't optimal for their own hair. Do whatever you prefer and let others do what they prefer.

That’s not marketed as “curly girl method”, that’s just marketing towards hair products in general. Coming from someone with stick straight hair, it’s not just curly haired folks that want those ingredients out of our stuff. It’s not good for any of us, just might show more on curly hair because it can be more unruly. There is certainly a quantity thing with products within the curly haired community. Sayings such as, “my hair drinks this stuff up!”, “I need a lot to be able to work it through the curls evenly” etc etc that you don’t hear from people with straight hair because it’s unnecessary. Can’t deny most people with curly hair use a net amount more product comparatively, even if they’re just using 1 or 2 products.

I think that is not about using a lot of products. The problem is because in the cgm original, you dont use sulfates. So... you acumulate weeks (or months) of products in your hair. No matter if you apply a drop, you dont clean if you dont use sulfates min once a week. In fact, a lot of people are chanching the original cgm and modifiying the sulfate use. ✨️

Shampoo can be used if it is sulfate free, a low-poo. Basically, a gentler shampoo that doesn't dry out the hair or scalp. Other option is to use a co-wash. Co- washes have very gentle cleansing surfactants, and have a creamy texture. Keeping a clean scalp will ensure healthy folicules.
The curly girl method is about ditching heat sources, avoiding sulfates, drying alcohol, silicones, mineral oils and waxes, and accepting and learning to love your natural texture.❤ The quantity of styling products is a personal choice.

….she opened my eyes to the fact that natural oils are a non-synthetic form of silicones. Not ever using a sulfate to truly cleans your hair, will eventually lead to loss of moisture and cause breakage. Emollients are things like castor and coconut oils. Moisture is what is locked/sealed in by these emollients. But you have to remove them sufficiently to put more moisture back in again. Also, it’s ok to wash your hair as needed. I’m someone that has to wash everyday, but can get away with every other day.

CG was a good jumping off point for me to repair 30 years of heat damage and torture to my hair. I eventually went back to using non -CG approved products, but keeping the method.
i wash once a week, at night, upside down over the bath tub.
I wash with head and shoulders 😱😱😱
condition with whatever cheap silicone free thing i found at ollies
rake through some curl cream and scrunch in some gel
Plop my hair in a net and wrap with microfiber towel overnight. YES i sleep with wet hair once a week!
In the morning, my roots are about 50% dry.
i scrunch some more gel or mousse into the lengths of hair, micro plop with a micro fiber towel, and then diffuse.
It's about 1 hr total of haircare per week, as opposed to 30 minutes per day that i used to spend on "straight" hair that still turned into a frizz pile 8 hours later 😂

Shampoo double cleanse with a scalp massager brush is necessary for my 2c hair. Conditioner of course. Leave-in a must. But every single step is not necessary. Just find a product and method that works for you and do your best. I've been at it a year and can honestly say, it always depends on the weather. I'm sticking to a few basic instinctive rules and forget the rest. Only complaint is tangles and loss of moisture retention. Hope I figure it out. But I don't need to waste lots of money and mental energy worrying about keeping up with all the beautiful people. Just accept it. 😂

For me it wasn't the amount of product I was using it was the many different types of product "needed" for the CGM. My hair was so weighted down by conditioner, curl cream, mousse, etc and then on top of that grease bc I was only washing it every week or so. I finally gave up shampooed and conditioned my hair like I normally do and my waves came back. They're a mess and half my hair is straight most of the time but I'm just embracing it atp. You should try out Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Bond Building shampoo plus conditioner. Plus use a shampoo brush to get good lather to cleanse the scalp thoroughly. You should be able to get a good 3-4 days between washes if you're using a decent shampoo. The leave in conditioner is also worth it. Depends on how long your hair is as well. The longer the hair, the longer you can go between washes. You don't need a ton of product. Just refresh with a water bottle next day and scrunch with a cotton T-shirt. That should do the job without too much effort. But makes sure you're also conditioning correctly. The scrunch and pulse method is important for conditioning as well as styling. Hope this info helps. Finding the right tutorial helps.

Shampoo only is the only thing that’s ever HELPED my curls, my hair is SO GREASY, it’s insane, and healthy because of it. But it weighs down my curls so much 😭

We are SERIOUSLY HAIR TWINS!!! I’ve never seen a white girl with hair that is SO LIKE MINE!!! I still do a variation of the curly girl method… I can’t handle matted hair, but I need to try something different!

@letsgoladies I wet my hair every morning in the shower, detangling it with a comb, upside down. Then let it air dry. Sometimes, if I’m feeling fancy, I’ll put some SheaMoisture products through my damp locks. I also have a bad habit of tying my hair up with an elastic band. If I could wear it down I don’t think I would have this trouble, but it gets in my face and is like a thick, wool blanket and I can’t handle that in summer. I also don’t have a great shampoo or conditioner, yet. I used to use DevaCurl, and am now just experimenting with random products. I feel like what I’m doing is pulling out too much hair.
