  • Teimojin from ‪@SurvivalDoctors‬ takes us through emergency supplies he carries with him when he goes out to backcountry. This gear will help you treat emergency medical conditions, stay warm, hydrate and self rescue if you ever become lost in a non-urban environment while backpacking, hiking, climbing or just adventuring.
Please note that not everyone has the same needs/wants and this video is meant to give you ideas for supplies to pack, NOT to tell you what everyone absolutely needs.

WARNING: If you carry a folding knife or multi-tool, DO NOT USE the back of the blade to strike the ferro rod unless you are EXTREMELY careful to not snap the blade shut across your fingers. That's a surefire way to actually NEED that first aid kit! Great video! Appreciate the high-quality content.

Nice tip for safety especially if you don’t have a reliable locking system on your switchblade or multitool. You can strike with the knife folded. I trust my locking mechanism on my leatherman and often use the blade to manipulate the tinder to my firelay setup but you can use a stick or something after your strike.

@@SurvivalDoctorsI was planing on doing it with my leather man and I think I'll test out striking on the grip and if I need too ill make a finish too the grip to promote striking cuz blades do one thing and locks tend to have the possibility of failure I ain't risking no more fingers not if I can help It

If all you have is a folder, use it in the closed position to strike along your ferro rod.

Good info. I’d also recommend “Gray Bearded Green Beret” where Josh walks through survival needs & priorities as well as specific gear recommendations . I think between these two guys, one could get a fantastic setup for backcountry

First time in CO my buddy and I drove to meet a friend up at monarch crest trail for a ride, it was sunny and 80 deg out, inevitably it rained mid day and at that altitude it turned to hail and snow. Being from the east coast we had no idea and found ourselves in teeshirts halfway into an 8 hour ride in a snow storm. The survival blanket I brought (XL one from sol rescue) saved the three of us, we had to bivy for a few hours and managed to hold off hypothermia. Major shit show, and lessons were learned.

In the spirit of making the things you carry as multipurpose as possible, apparently you can make up a wound disinfectant/ irrigation solution with chlorine water purification tablets. The ratio I´ve seen recommended is the amount of tablets you´d use to purify 1l (1000 ccm) of water for drinking in either 0.3l (300 ccm) for wound irrigation or 3-5 ml (3-5 ccm) for disinfection. That method isn´t without issues because the resulting solution is acidic, and might damage healthy tissue provided you don´t add a base to buffer. For this reason it´s recommended you don´t treat any injury more than once.
In anticipation of ever having to do this you can stash a backup water purification kit ( chlorine tablets, WhirlPak bag, maybe also a few coffee filters) or other emrgency supplies inside a graduated centrifuge tube (a.k.a. Eppendorf tube) since it doubles as a measure for small amounts of liquid.

Nice info, especially on your medical kit. I have taught hundreds of people friction fire and if in a real survival situation, I would much rather have a lighter, matches and ferro rod. A signal mirror and whistle would be a great addition to your kit. You may think you are lost but then spot a hiker off in the distance, your voice may not carry, however a mirror or whistle can get their attention. This would apply if you are hurt and can’t walk as well. Good call on the PLB, no reason not to have one these days. Lastly, I tell my students to carry 3 days of their Rx meds in case they wind up in a survival situation.

Hiya here in the uk the majority of people carry either a combination or stand alone of a bothy bag which is a bright orange parachute type shelter which completely encloses you and a few other people while awaiting rescue. Bright orange and good protection even for just having you’re lunch in while out in bad conditions. As our mountain ranges are all quite rocky and craggy so offer very limited ways to setup a tarp or similar shelter. And then in addition to this also carry a survival Bivy bag. For me personally I put a massive emphasis on major bleeding and signalling. Signalling starts with your colour clothing, because if you’re knocked unconscious no one will find you in dark colours. Orange panel (in my case bivvy bag) Signal mirror, whistle and then a 12hr light stick out of packaging with cord tied to it which allows you to make a buzz saw with it. And a PLB. Navigation isn’t optional item, if you’re going wherever you’re going you must have the ability to orientate yourself.

Very good video. I was suprised to see most of the kit is identical to my day hike gear. Though I use a ham radio over the sat phoone. Ive spent the last few years figuring out how to hit a repeater with a dual band 4-5 watt unit in my local hike areas. I can also improvise a jungle antenna to increace my TX and RX.

@@SurvivalDoctors I'd like to suggest an addition. If you carry a bag of brightly colored balloons, they can be used very effectively as a visual detection tool for rescue. I keep a roll of string and a bit of gorilla tape to attach the string to a rock or battery. Toss the string over a branch that's visible to aircraft and hoist a few balloons up. They weigh nothing and you can carry 100 of them easily.
