    Hey prep medic, I hope you see this. I've been a RUclips follow of yours for quite some time now. I'm a paramedic fire fighter in WV, we are looking into using medics on the county swat team and would love a few minutes to talk with you how to get a program like that started here. Especially in regards to insurance, liability, and medical direction.

    yo prep med and everyone else, feeling positive today so thought I'd share something fun. Started watching this channel a couple years ago I think and it became a real guidance for what I found interesting and wanted to continue with after high school. Right now I'm a combat medic in the military and looking into studying medicine after, just want to let everyone know that things always work out in the end if you just keep pushing. sorry for the scrambled message, hopefully someone found it entertaining!

    Super informative! I really liked the tips of making the SAM splint into a T instead of a C, and of using a stick to slide material under the patient, like at 7:03. I took a wilderness first aid course last year, and neither of these were mentioned but they both seem like great ideas!

      @@SurvivalDoctors We were shown how to make one using a SAM splint, secured with a triangular bandage (or other convenient wrap). One version had the splint hooked over itself in the front and the top edge folded to support the patient's chin.
      The other was just the splint folded in half and wrapped in the bandage, then curved around the patient's neck with the bandage's ends tied together to adjust snugness. The second was supposed to be a quick version for situations like stabilizing the patient enough to move them a few feet out of immediate danger. What are your thoughts on using this one?
      Are there other ways to make one?

      A long time ago I had a really bad ankle sprain on a camping trip. I managed to get myself out, but I was on crutches for nearly two weeks after I got home. I had taken my boot off to inspect my ankle, and then put it back on to get home. I bushcrafted a crutch, but it would’ve been nice to even have a SAM splint outside my boot. I did make a splint with sticks, but it wasn’t that helpful, and became so bothersome I took it off.😂

      There is a simple answer and please don't get offended: You don't. You are being more of a liability/problem than of help, you don't have the knowledge nor the equipment/PPE, you'll do more bad than good. The best thing is to get involved with a recognized and INSARAG certified organization ( Look up the FEMA USAR Teams: There are a little bit less than 30 USAR Teams).

    • @drewallenby3277
      @drewallenby3277 Год назад +9

      @@germedicsam to back onto this, you don't need to be assisting the teams in the search to be helpfully. volunteers worker are the lifeline in disaster scenario. food preparation for survives and searchers, housing and shelter for the displaced, all of that is equal too if not more important then the work itself.

      @@germedicsam we are required by law to help in any way possible. Friday when i was in rolling fork it took over 30 minutes for EMT's to arrive. granted we didnt provide medical treatment but we carried people out of houses just for said house to collapse just minutes later. For the major injuries, there was a chaser who was emt certified so he tended to the man. Idk i guess im asking how to better optimize how us storm chasers go about these mass casualty scenerios

      @@OayxYT that's really commendable to help and there's tons of ways to help but to get that experience and take some courses would be the best route. It's not even so much you would get in the way but you could get hurt yourself. The proper training to get some experience under your belt is the best way to get the groundworks in to be able to help in a S&R operation. Hope this helps and good luck. Don't ever stop wanting to help people btw. It's a great blessing to want to do so that is not shared or experienced by many these days.

    Great video Sam. In a high school weightlifting incident, I dislocated my knee cap and tore some of the stuff around it. The school didn't have the stuff to splint it properly, so they ended up using 2x4's and gauze, on recommendation of my Physical Therapist, who I called in a panic.
    It worked for the 30 minute bus ride home, until the PT put the knee cap back in place.

      Sam splints are great multi use medical body support . As a neck brace to foot and leg and arm and hand . Being a product distributor is easy write them . The multi use products that have real world apps . That are light and not expensive . But write your name and phone on them if you want to get them back . Most of the time you will never get them back . The large bandage. Roll are great for the sans so hold in place as well as so many other multi use light weight NASAR EMT kits .

    Hello Mr. Sam,
    I have a question by any chance you have/plan of making an everything needed medical supplies video for civilians. On RUclips I find so many TOP 20 ITEMS BLAH videos, but i see you as a very reliable person. I want to make one of the rooms in my house to have supplies from the basic bandaid to defibrillator or even stretchers. I've seen some of your videos like EDC to trauma kit. I would like to see a video for most supplies you'd recommend every person should have in case help is hard to reach/impossible. Call me paranoid and such but i would like to be able to save my own/loved one's life if I have no other way doing so. I know I can't really get myself a lifetime supply of insulin but i know i could get enough medical supplies to keep myself and family safe.

    Going to go camping in the snow around big bear mid April, any advice i hear there is way more snow with the storms that have been going on.
    Any advice on what to bring and what to be on the look out for would be greatly appreciated.

    • @SurvivalDoctors
      @SurvivalDoctors Год назад +3

      whats the temperature around that time? and how deep is the snow? that would change my gear choice for wet snow vs. dry and cold snow. either way, a good sleeping bag with a waterproof bivy bag and a mylar tarp would be in my pack either way. If it's below freezing, I like to bring a sleeping bag with a comfort level 10-20 degrees lower than the actual temp and always bring a bivy bag with a nice 4 inch tall sleeping pad

    Couldn't we leave the shoe on ? It is already one step of the RICE algorithm done (compression) and depending on the shoe it will also maintain the ankle

      Right. Can u put the splint on under a shoe.

    • @PrepMedic
      @PrepMedic  Год назад +6

      RICE isn’t really a thing anymore. All the steps we have taken against inflammation in these injuries have actually been shown to slow healing. Also, you need to assess the extent of the injury and determine the circulation status of the distal leg which will dictate if you need to re-align the fracture. Also, I tight boot can facilitate compartment syndrome.

      the ankle with just a boot would not be stable, you would have to then splint the boot. however, if you never evaluated the foot, you can be missing bleeds, pulseless feet, etc
