      Hey Bill! I'm coming along slowly in my watch-making project. I've destroyed one ST36 when I took out the fourth wheel and trimmed it down. Now I can't get it back together. But I had a backup ST36, and I trimmed the fourth wheel (Seconds wheel) without taking it apart and was able to get the enamel dial on. Once I put the hands on and trim the stem, I'll be all set! (Just got an ETA 6498 and planning another project!) Cheers, Bill

    Hi Bill, i am a big fan of Glashütte Original, they make fantastic time piece, their pre-owned prices are considered a bargain for what you get. I really like their Sixties line, especially with the new dial from Basel World 2018, and their Pano collection. The German term for pilots watches is Flieger :) . Thanks for the content, i think people should pay attention to GO more, they have great entry level watches with high horology pedigree. Best, Abdul

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Abdul, yes, I like that new green one from Basel World, too, and the whole Sixties line. Yes! Flieger is the German word I was thinking of ... to mis-pronounce! Cheers, Bill

    For me, the PanoMatic Inverse, PanoReserve and the Seventies are my favorite models among Glashutte's watches. I just love the way they expose the balance wheel on the Panomatic Inverse model. The German's precision is always attractive in its own way. Best, Thanh

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад +2

      Hi Thanh Lai! Yes, the PanoMatic Inverse is a very cool watch, but it's about double what the entry level Hand Date is . My favorite is still the PanoReserve...mainly because it's a manual. However, between the prices is the PanoInverse, the manual wind version, with prices beginning around $6,500 pre-owned. What do you think? Kindest regards, Bill

    • @ThanhLai5

      Hello sir! That's awesome. By the way, at the entry level, I'll choose the PanoReserve over the Seventies if I can only choose one at a time. The dial of the PanoReserve looks very interesting. Best, Thanh

    Hi Bill. I’ve had the Navigator for 10 years and was one of the first owners to switch out the steel case back for a sapphire case back, way back in 2009. What sets this watch apart from every other Fleiger watch (“Fleiger” is the term you were searching for in your video) is its Haute Horology Caliber 100 Manufacture Movement, including it’s ingenious hacking mechanism at 7:00 and G.O.’s panorama date. Lume is also fantastic. For me, it’s been a real under-the-radar keeper.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад

      Hi David, you are so right! The Fleiger-look is one that so much is a real pilot's watch, and the GO Navigator nails it! Having an exhibition window is icing on the cake! They're good buys and I'll never understand why they discontinued the model. They're great values on the pre-owned market. Do you have the regular or chronograph version? Kindest regards, Bill

    I have acquired a preowned grey sunburst dial GO Seventies Panorama Date a little while ago and it’s been growing on me ever since. A solid beautifully finished and engineered piece. It’s a classier all round better alternative to a Rolex Datejust and watches in that tier. I can see myself keeping this beauty for a very long time.

    really liked panolunar watch, and was able to try on at an AD. but 13mm or thicker case really bothered me. I have 6.5 inch circumference. just won't sit well. I wish GO make slightly thinner for dresser watches

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  5 лет назад

      Yes Stephanie, I agree. I know that Vacheron Constantin has 40mm watches that they recently released in 36mm versions , but the thickness may depend limitations of the movement base. I believe VC uses the same calibre 4400 in both the 40 and 36mm versions. I've noticed other watch companies have done the same-after all we all don't have a 'one-size-fits-all' wrist any more than we all have the same shoe size. Kindest regards, Bill

    The reason for the higher price at the watches with dates is that these are panorama dates.
    The enlarged display of the date is achieved by means of two concentrically arranged number rings. So it is a much more complicated date complication in the watch. Very characteristic for the watches from Glashütte. Lange uses them also.
    Hat i also find interesting about all the watches with this date at GO is. That u get chatons and the rotor for winding is made of gold. Also additionally a swan neck regulator.
    They are a lot of watch for the money.
    For anyone considering a Rolex submariner I recommend to check out also the SEAQ of GO, the movement is stunning. Plus the date complication.
    (Even I think That if u need to check the date during diving it might be too late already) 😁

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  3 года назад +1

      Yes Johan, big dates cost more. On my Van Cleef & Arpels Pierre Arpels Heure d'Ici & Heure d'Ailleurs with two dates, Jean-Marc Wiederrecht had to use two date wheels and use a micro-rotor to keep it thin as VC&A demanded....of course this meant that the balance wheel couldn't be as big as he wished. Take care and be safe, Bill😷

    Hi Bill, don't you think the indices next to the moonphase window is kinda disturb the simple clean dial? Do you think it looks better without it?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад

      Hi James, I used to have an Audemars Piguet with a moon phase...and once I worked out how to set it, I found I wasn't interested in it as much as I thought. Providing added indexes probably wouldn't help me much because precision on something I wouldn't pay attention to anyway would be, as you say, somewhat of a distraction from design. I far prefer the H. Moser moon that subtly changes and enhances the design. Cheers, Bill

    Hi Bill, I’m a new fan of yours. Like the fact you don’t take yourself seriously and you are the most knowledgeable of ANY of the watch you tubers. Wish I had access to some of the deals you can find here in the UK.
    What are your thoughts on watches made out of palladium? I’m thinking of buying a Parmigiana ( a brand you opened my eyes to) but I’ve never encountered such an exotic material. Maybe a suitable subject for a future episode? Thanks, Paul

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад

      Hi Paul, that's a metal I'm not sure about. It's sort of a cross between platinum and something else... I have a white gold, platinum and steel watches, and were it not for the fact that I knew in advance, I honestly cannot tell the difference. Palladium is supposed to stay shiny longer than gold or platinum (steel too I suppose), but I just don't know that much about it. Which watch were you looking at made of palladium? Kindest regards, Bill

    • @pauloshea3994
      @pauloshea3994 6 лет назад +1

      It’s a Parmigiana Kalpa, a limited edition of 100. It’s in really good condition and I hummed and hahed between that and a Kalpa hebdomadaire in rose gold but I felt that might be too big for me although I do have a thick wrist

    • @pauloshea3994
      @pauloshea3994 6 лет назад +1

      Palladium is a stand alone metal, pd in the period tablet.Recently it’s value has soared as it’s used as a catalytic converter in gasoline engines whereas platinum is used mainly as a catalyst in Diesel engines which are a bit out of favour just lately.

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  6 лет назад

      Paul, you have a choice you cannot lose on with those two. The palladium Kalpa sounds like a rare and wonderful bird, and the Kalpa Hebdo is one of my favorites since it's manual wind and an 8-day power reserve. Let me know what you do! Cheers, Bill

    • @pauloshea3994
      @pauloshea3994 6 лет назад +1

      Hi Bill, I plumped for the Kalpa in palladium. Really pleased and surprised how easy it wears in the wrist.
      Now saving up for a Harbring 2 COS which is a really unusual chronograph.

    Dear Bill: Great practical and eye opening content. Glashütte Original is an estimable watch manufacturer. It would probably be hard to beat the Senator featured in your program as a first initial purchase of better horology. While I have not handled nor put a GO on my wrist, the available input (including your video) is thought provoking. I am going to be in Berlin this coming Thursday and I am going to try and get a better fix on GO and some other German brands and watchmakers (Including I hope Thomas Ninchritz and Joachim Benzinger) not readily seen in my home city of Phoenix. The subject of Glashütte Original watches segues into the interesting larger subject of watch distribution channels and how smaller watch manufacturers can penetrate larger foreign markets and achieve a reasonable number of points of distribution that are widespread. This weight issue devolves to the following less weighty issue: if one wakes up on a Saturday morning and wants to get in their car to see, handle and try on GOs or other brands, how likely is it that this is a real possibility? I live in Phoenix and am complaining but things are probably far worse for your friend Clive in Oklahoma. I actually know of one dealer where I could probably see a GO as they have every brand possible but the question then becomes what is the breadth of their GO brand knowledge and inventory? There are numerous traveling watch events popping up that provide an opportunity to see as many as 30 different brands in one place and at one time but I am unaware of these events hitting Arizona yet. Ditto for some of the new New York Horological Society outreach courses which will be offered soon in Denver and Los Angeles Phoenix is only a one hour flight away from Los Angeles but that is where you really have to go to be immersed in all things horological. For people like me, RUclips and the internet are the lifelines of watch knowledge (although I recently joined a national collectors group which has two chapters in Arizona). However, there is absolutely no substitute for physical in person access to GO and as many other brands as possible. The monolithic stature of Rolex and Patek Phillipe may be attributable in part to relatively widespread physical access in comparison to brands like GO. I have no trouble locally seeing and handling not just all the Rolexes (and Tudors) I want (leaving aside wait lists for certain models) but the same is also true for Patek Phillipe. They have an AD with substantial inventory in North Scottsdale and there is another AD for other higher end lines who always has a good selection of what I can only assume are unworn Patek Phillipes. Developing widespread ready physical access to a more diverse retinue of brands including GO is a challenge with the proviso that the Best Buy phenomena makes this difficult. People (including myself) go to an AD and look at a watch. If they like it and want to explore a purchase, they go home and go on the internet to make the purchase. This was a common at Best Buy for awhile. People would look at Best Buy to make their buying decision and then do their purchase on Amazon. Thanks again for your always thoughtful presentations. Your fan. Howard

      Hi Howard! Wow! I envy your trip to Berlin and all the watch stores they have there. Next spring I'll be in Germany and hope to visit some watchmakers. However, before that, I'll be at the GO booth at the WatchTime show in NYC next month. If you get a chance to go, don't miss it. Cheers, Bill

    • @h111551
      @h111551 6 лет назад +1

      Dear Bill: I would love to go to the WatchTime show in NYC but I have conflicting work commitments. WatchTime did a Mexico edition starting in 2015 and I am curious about the current status of the Mexico edition. Mexico City is a 3 hour direct flight from Phoenix. I plan on checking out Mexico City preowned watch dealers next time I go down there. I don’t know if there has ever been any Latin American watch manufacturing of note in contrast to jewelry stores (like the original Cuervo y Sobrinos of pre-Castro Havana) who ordered watches from Europe upon which they placed their names on the dials (either solely or jointly with the manufacturer). My instant purpose in writing is triggered by a email of this a.m. with a history of the Rolex Daytona attached. The frustration with Rolex is what appears to be their total suppression of the personal identities of major design and technological personages within the company. It is probably easier to obtain data about the personalities involved in famous CIA and KGB covert operations than it is to find out who led the Daytona design team and how the vision for the Daytona evolved. Since the Daytona is truly iconic, this is type of historic information is of genuine significance to horological history. While I have little doubt that Rolex probably has an amazing internal archive, archival librarian and possibly even an in-house history staff, they seem to keep this information under wraps. I bought a stainless steel Tudor Fastrider that is very heavily influenced by the Daytona. It was purchased because this particular model was my favorite that I picked out after carefully assessing the entire Tudor line. I would love to know which person or persons are responsible for (or at least influential in) the design of my Tudor. This is old guy griping. Have a great weekend. Howard
