Thanks for this video. I am 54 & was just diagnosed with COPD about a week ago. I wasn't exactly told what stage I was/am at. I was just told that my lung capacity is at 70% & given an inhaler & told to come back for a follow-up in 6 months. I have always feared COPD & have had the symptoms for years & due to fear, ignored going to be seen by a Pulmonary Specialists. I had quit smoking in October of 2017 but by smoking an electronic cigarette only. Until a month ago when I got real short of breathe for about a week on & off, I told my MD to send me to a specialists. I guess to learn more facts about COPD, I need to continue learning from others with the same disease. Thanks again.

Thanks Derek, I am a carer of a gentleman with Stage 4 COPD and am eagerly awaiting your information on the Pulse Oximeter, we have one for him to use but sometimes I am not sure if it is reading correctly, his fingers (and toes) get very cold. Thanks again, very informative, much better than trolling through clinical articles :)

Many thanks Barbra for your kind words. The video blogs are an extension of my written blogs with the hope I can provide some information that is not shown in the written ones. It is easy to demonstrate and explain everything on video. For instance on the next blog I will be talking about the oximeter, and will be able to demonstrate it working on my finger. Another blog planned for the very near future is about inhalers and how to use them.

Hi Derek, I wonder if you could help to explain how the numbers work please? In August 2017 a hospital consultant wrote that I had severe COPD - FEV1 = 25%. Five months Later in January 2018 a different doctor wrote that my FEV1 was 0.8 with an FVC of 1.8, which he said in his letter gave me an obstructive lung defect.
Are these two different conclusions the same I wonder and what do the figures mean?
I live in the UK an am male 73 years old.
    Thanks
    David
