This is an amazing video man! It helped me out a lot! Been making tomahawks but want to start making Viking style axes more traditionally. So this was a really cool video to watch! Love it
You are amazing! Can I suggest a build? Take a standard size sledgehammer head, leave one side of it a hammer and hammer out the other side into the biggest Dane axe you can.
A viking man needs a viking axe. Great stuff, dude. Writing from India, planing on making one too out of some mild steel but with an O1 file as the bit instead of a leaf spring.
Seriously though dude, you are a fu@#ing beast. Ive watched a lot of videos of people forging all manner of things and the only times Ive seen metal spread out like that was with power hammers. Unbelievable!
Great axe 👌👍 great video , awesome builds i really like your videos and the style you forging , i mean forging axes and blades in a simple way , keep it going
Wow dude. Is your first name Thor? You look like him and you swing a hammer like he does. I'm really impressed with your knowledge and skill. Good work
Cool! I learned a good bit. That's a good confidence building video. In the future, how about some still shots of the finished product? I couldn't really get a good look at it with you waving it around at the end.
That was really cool, I've got that itch to dive into blacksmithing bad! and this has simply furthered that itch lol really enjoyed watching your axe smithing ;p
So glad that I found your channel. Getting into forging as a hobby (another one, I tie flies and fish also) at the young age of seventy one. I built my own charcoal forge and my wife bought a good vintage anvil for me. I noticed that the cut-off tool in your hardy hole resembles an axe head. Would I be able to use a ''cheap'' hatchet and fit the head to the hardy hardy hole or would it not be safe ? If not a good idea, I might have to make one. Thank you. Really enjoy watching you work.
I‘m new to blacksmithing too and use a charcoal forge. If you can forge the axe head poll into a shank to fit the hardy hole it should probably work. My first hardy tool is really crude but does the job.
Awesome! It’s easy some guys use a machine hammer but do it yourself it’s fantastic. I want to purchase one of this axe hehehehe. Please how can I have it? Greetings from Brazil!
If that price of steel came out of your grandpas forge it could be wrought iron in which case could I advise you too clean it up completely and etch it, wrought iron is beautiful when etched
Holy crap! Now we know what Thor has been doing since the rise of the Christian church in Northern Europe. He spreads that metal like its lead with trusty Mjolnir in hand.
very cool looking axe, allot of hard work went into that dude.I have a question, the flux that you blacksmiths use, is it something you buy or make up yourselves? I was wondering because it must be fairly cheap the way everyone just covers things up with it. enjoy your efforts, thanks for posting.
The black near the handle where you put the bevels...is that obtained by just not buffing the axe? I like the rough textured look that comes up almost to the fine edge. Just wondered if its obtained by just not buffing it out.
Would you make and sell a couple like this and can you make other simple things to order? If I sent pictures of the other items? I've seen alot of these types of videos and have a want but can't make them myself. I'm disabled but want hand forged and you sir seem to make this look easy. If not I understand but again I'm very interested in your work. Great job.
James Hines check me out on Facebook. Names old hickory forge. I’ve pretty much perfected the process for making axes like this and I make batches from time to time.
I know this is kind of off topic... sorry. I have watched your hammer video. I also watch Old School Forge (Chandler Dickinson). I would be interested in one of your hammers. I enjoy watching your videos and thank you for sharing.
Where did you get the handles? The local rondezvoue has them, but to expensive for my cheap butt, lol. Also, where to get a cheap drift for Hawks? Thanks!
Sir: You are working towards a " grinding edge" and me to. Question: What is your idea of the thickness of the forge edge as I know we got the best steel inside the blade's surface . I had build a ribbon burner and yesterday got my first forge weld and 6 bodies for Tommy Hawks cut hopefully get a few done in days. Partly due to your teaching Sir and a few others. Thanks
MrArmystrong85 hard to say. A lot of things can go wrong trying to set a forge weld. Could be too cold. Hitting it too hard. Metal not clean enough. There’s a lot of room for error
Bill C yes. There’s newer models of these axes for sale on my etsy shop. I’ve gotten the process much more refined and the finished products are much better. Should be a link in the description
@@OldHickoryForge hum. will look around. Minds messed up a bit with pain and stuff. I miss things. Will look. I have a friend that would go GAGA over a barbarian axe. A "real" barbarian axe. Not that "chi**" crapola.
It's good to see you keeping the army motto. If it ain't raining we aren't training. Thank you for explaining the details
I don't think it was a dumb idea , that is a beautiful axe thank for sharing 👍
It took me about 30 minutes to watch because of my kids… But dammit I finished, and I like it. And you seriously make that axe look small 💪
This is an amazing video man! It helped me out a lot! Been making tomahawks but want to start making Viking style axes more traditionally. So this was a really cool video to watch! Love it
You looked like a viking before the axe. Good job on the axe as well.
You are amazing! Can I suggest a build?
Take a standard size sledgehammer head, leave one side of it a hammer and hammer out the other side into the biggest Dane axe you can.
That is one magnificent looking anvil!
Can’t tell if the axe is just tint or if this dude is just one giant behemoth of a man
He's just a behemoth. Infact, power hammers are based off his arms lol
He’s just a young version of Andre the smith
hes fucking huge
Dude is like 6'3 I wanna bet
Bad ass Tomahawk!
Thanks for inviting us in to your work shop and your process.

Love this build and today I finished my ribbon burner and I'll try this myself,
Thanks for showing me the ropes and teaching me how to.Sir
Another beautiful design, I'm hoping to build a small forge soon and see what I can do. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Cool, man! I got my forge for Christmas, but sadly where I'm at it was pretty bad out and I couldn't forge until now
That turned out great! You do a great job also of explaining your steps, I appreciate that.
Great job love to watch other blacksmiths work.
Very nice!
Great work dude.
I wish I could buy one like this.
That axe came out nice
Made great tools from broken leaf springs..
I like it
Seriously though dude, you are a fu@#ing beast. Ive watched a lot of videos of people forging all manner of things and the only times Ive seen metal spread out like that was with power hammers. Unbelievable!
Great work!! That axe should be a great tool when and if you needed it in the woods.
3rd weld LOOKS LIKE A CHUNK OF THE SUN
Love seeing video of a blacksmith, even though I didn't make one, only in my mind.
Great work! This Nord loves it.

Great result.

It's just regular old Borax that most smiths use for flux.

Jessy Epperson yes. Just don’t grind off the forge scale
this is how a man makes an axe
Nice work, man. What kind of oil do you use for your quench? Do you warm it up first, or is it just room temp?
Awesome
outstanding
i been thinking of something similar tho im inexperienced at forge welding so ill probably use arc then forge weld
very good work, dude, a simple but well done work, congrats, i suscribe ;)
what is you go to for moisture protection. being rain, skin contac ?
mat a boiled linseed oil works well
@@OldHickoryForge now do you also heat the top service up with a torch just enough for a little smoke or size when applying?

Where did you get your tomahawk drift from?
Where did you get the handles? The local rondezvoue has them, but to expensive for my cheap butt, lol. Also, where to get a cheap drift for Hawks? Thanks!

www.crazycrow.com/site/ hawk handles here
Thanks, great video! :)
Hey John great axe by the way. Do you have a specific sight where you get your handles or do you make them yourself? Thanks
He said it was Crazy Crow Trading Post. They are like $8 each.
Nice
How much are your axes selling for?
Dude. How much to forge one? How do you harden them?

I’m having trouble getting a weld when I try to do what you did. What would you advise?

Hacking the wood piece with the axe proves nothing. That dude looks like he can split wood with a milk carton. But good job for real
Need more sharpening
