The extreme degree to which they must condense the story to make it 5 episodes long for all the eay up through the end of thr Dark Tournament makes me somewhat fascinated my how they'll have to rearrange all of the pieces of the story and hence I'm curious to watch it.
I wrote this on another video on this subject but I'll just do a copy-pasta here because why not? I don't know why they went up to the end of Dark Tournament. 5 hours just isn't enough. I originally wrote that they should've just gone up to the end of the first Toguro fight and rescue Yukina but the more I wrote, the more I realized that even the first 25 episodes was too much. Really, things should've ended with the 4 Saint Beasts. And it's fits perfectly. We see Yusuke resurrected, we get his encounters with Gouki, showing Yusuke isn't just a good fighter but he's smart, able to think out a clever way to win against a stronger fighter (shooting Gouki in the mouth when he realized he could never get through the tough skin). We see how kind he is and willing to sacrifice with Kurama and he cares for Keiko, which we see with his fight against Hiei (and again, being clever with the mirror). The tournament with Genkai introduces us to her and it buffs him up. Then we get the gang all together, for 4 Saint Beasts. Yusuke brings along his rival Kuwabara along with Kurama and Hiei, 3 enemies now turned allies. We get to see them fight and they put it all on the line to save the city from the 4 Saint Beasts. Perfect! Yes, we don't get the favorite parts from the anime, the Toguro Brothers and Dark Tournament, but fans would much rather have it done competently than haphazardly. And saving that for S2 would be better. It gives it more time, plus rescuing Yukina is perfect for the first part of S2. We see Yusuke and Kawabara just clean up demons, showing that they're way above most normal enemies. It gives weight to the strength of the Toguro brothers.

For the most part I’d agree with you but actually in the manga, Yusuke does ask the Forlorn Hope to take only part of each of their lives to fulfill the wish. I remember this because it was Yusuke showing more of a sense of pragmatism whereas in the anime Yusuke just offers up his own life without considering his own mother. While it seems like a stretch it seems like the writers seem to draw more from the manga- such as this bit and the photo displayed at Yusuke’s funeral. Not saying they do a good job of that either but at least there is some basis for Yusuke only offering up half of his life

It's as if people feel like they HAVE to like these adaptations of anime and video games. They're so hungry for an adaptation that's actually good, that anything even slightly above quality is award winning to them.
"Watch 112 episodes of the anime before watching this if ya haven't seen it"😂 that's a tall order for someone whose never seen it before. No hate here and I TOTALLY AGREE WATCH THE ANIME it's one of the all time greats that sentence just made me chuckle looking at it through the eyes of someone who hasn't seen the anime( i have seen ut but a LONG TIME ago when it was FIRST airing on adult swim were talking 20+ years 😅) the manga is also great and well worth the read! Mangadex is any would be manga readers best friend IF you can't afford to support the artist at the moment.
Ugh already the fact we don't see Takanaka in the beginning is a letdown as his reaction to the accident shows how much the teacher REALLY cared for Yu.
one of my favorite things about yu yu hakusho that this adaptation missed was something that a lot of action anime miss now which is the 4 or 5 episodes (i forgot) that yusuke had to grow and communicate with his friends even making friends with kuwubara and kuwubara's episode not being included where he helped his friends that episode was surprising and touching showing that kuwubara isnt the punk we saw in episode 1 and there was no building with yusuke and keiko's romantic hints while yusuke is dead and isnt able to easily talk with keiko.
The fights were phenomenal. Specifically, the one against the infected human and against goki step past that they rushed like four of the major arcs together, and I hate did that
So many live action remakes it's getting hard to keep track of them all. Only one I actually saw was the one piece one and I hope they use that to expand on the coby side of the story rather than Luffy as we already know his side. Coby could use the development as well as hibari prince gruce and co as they are basically the marine supernovas and oda really doesn't have the time to beef them up that fast or give them all more spotlight with what's going on. The live action can do that.
I believe Netflix one piece is a great example of how an adaptation should be. True to the source but has an identity of its own and brings new fans to the series
They also had a much bigger budget and more episodes to work with. Plus Oda was 100% involved. It had a lot more behind it. If YYH Netflix had been three seasons or so, just image how much better it would have been. That being said, there was still a fair bit to admire, like the action scenes. I found it a mixed bag.
I haven't seem the OPLA because I'm not familiar with One Piece aside from hazy memories of watching the first few episodes on 4KidsTV waaaay back in the day lol.
I felt that it was meh! Some changes I liked but I agree that those moments we love so much happened because it took time to get there. Rushing to the finish line only made those moments feel cheap.
He does smoke in the Manga. Which at the time, it felt like they were paying homage. But when I saw people get angry about it, I realized not many know that. Then I realized maybe it was just as you said, an act of rebellion.
@@gIokk You know what I figured out what happened. This was years ago but I found the YYH anime online and was gonna watch the whole thing but got tired of half hour episodes so I found the manga instead and read the entire thing (up to the end of the tournament I think? I read 3000 pages in a day I remember that very clearly lol) in pretty much one sitting. So since I watched the first few episodes and then read the first few chapters right after my brain must have melded em together over the years. That was... 15 years ago fuck lol. Edit: and I own the DVD set now that I'm an adult, I haven't pirated anything in a real long time lol, it's not worth the risk nowadays, I don't like stealing content I enjoy, and honestly it's just easier to just pay lol. Just figured I'd throw this in in case someone wants to yell at me for pirating the series >.>
@@damiencouturee6240 lmfaoo brooo shits crazy man... thats how it be though, yyh is just too great tho. ill always rewatch it, i remember when I came across it again during the quaratine in 2020 and rewatched the series 😂, i first watched it when i was a kid in 2010, was hooked ever since man.
Bro this show was so rushed 😢 Netflix abused a legendary show for humanity once again. . Literally like rewatching the live adaptation is like itachi putting Sasuke in a genjutsu as a child..
I like this video but just wanted to say maybe sprinkle the patreon and sponsor stuff throughout bc its kinda hard to want to keep watching after 6 minutes of plugs and ads good work just wanted to throw in my 2 cents
Also I get why they'd want a one-to-one adaptation, mostly cuz it's THAT good of a series. I'm not really asking for that, more like I hope that they do all they can to elevate the story and characters that the anime would struggle to do, (even if only by character design) or yeah follow it closely. If it fails in many ways (especially like this), it's a waste of time
I like to think that since Hiei gave himself the jagan eye by this shows logic it didn’t take all his power so live action hiei is just casually low B class.
I swear if you don't like an adaptation the first defense is always someone saying "well it was never gonna be a 1 to 1 remake" like bro get Netflix nuts out your mouth and accept that it wasn't a good adaptation.
I thought they could use the twins of the first spirit detective, Kuroko Sato as the next heroes, Kaisei and Fubuki Sanada. You could jump ahead only a few years without making everyone on the original show middle aged.
I can honestly say, after watching the full LA and sitting with my thoughts for a bit, I'm extremely disappointed with this adaptation. It's not because I wanted more fight scenes, a better adherence to the original chronology, or something like that. There was so much missing in terms of dialogue, emotion, suspense, and character development. I keep reading responses to criticism cite a lack of budget or uncertainty about being renewed for a second season, but honestly this rework could have been given so much more heft if they had like 2 more episodes worth of mainly dialogue or perspective/flashbacks spliced into the existing episodes. I wish they would have ended the first season of the LA at the same place they ended in the anime, I could have lived with that. Just imagine the cliffhanger we would have gotten if we watched Yusuke walk away from the rigged fight believing he actually won, going back to reality with a newly found confidence, only to have Toguro standing in front of him and the season ending there.
Failed speed run is what I'd describe it as. There was too much ground to cover for 5 hours. They needed scale back to a reasonable goal rather than smash the first 2 seasons in 5 hours.
It is an interesting contrast between the quality of this, vs. the quality of the One Piece adaptation. It's clear that both want to condense it, but the One Piece one seems to only really want to remove some of the fluff and filler while maintaining the story, arcs, and characters as much as possible. It doesn't require you to see One Piece to enjoy the adaptation. And while I still hold that I had a blast watching the live Action YYH, if I hadn't seen the anime a dozen times half of what happened wouldn't have made sense, and in retrospect may be why I was more lenient because I wasn't even thinking about that at the time. Of course X and Y happen, because it was in the show and I know the meaning! but, others won't. So your question of "Who is this for?" Is the most important one, because I really don't know who this is for. Maybe it's for folks like me that are easily entertained, I do fall for the jingle keys. That said, I watched the anime again right after watching this and it was the perfect palette cleanser! It's not complete trash like The Death Note movie (Are we allowed to talk about that?) But it wasn't even close to the care that was put into One Piece. Love the video mate!
I didn't hate this. It's just not what it could have been. I don't mind so much that they decided to speedrun the first couple of arcs. What bothered me is that they took one of the best (if not the best) tournament arc in all anime and made it a poorly thought-out mess. All they really had to do was nail the Dark Tournament. It wouldn't replace my DVD collection of the series or all my issues of Shonen Jump mind you but it could have been a good jumping in point for others to give Yu Yu a try.
In regards to your intro I'm glad you said it because with Netflix avatar out its a lot of avatar fans who are just trying to outright shut down anyone who has a negative opinion on the show. Im like feel free to enjoy it but we not gonna act like the writing wasn't bad. You can make changes sure but when you make too many it generally doesn't end well.
I hated what Episode 4 did to Kuwabara. In Episode 3, he figured out how to use Spirit Sword but in the following Episode, he doesn't bother to try using it even when he knows Keiko and especially Yukina would've gotten hurt by the monster that tries attacking him. What was the point of his speech abouting being a man if he's gonna be treated as powerless as the girls when in the anime, Kuwabara would've easily dealt with a monster like that from the same arc?
I really wanted to give it a chance but it felt too inconsistent with the narrative they were going for. It's not a great dub because it makes the direction of the actors disjointed. Pacing is too fast, great fight scenes to keep it short
My biggest problem with the show was the tone. Yu Yu Hakusho was funny, bold, tense. The live adaptation was none of those things. Part of the reason Koenma was such an interesting character was because his title of second in line ruler of the spirit world was juxtaposed by him literally being a baby. It was played off for laughs sometimes sure. But by the end of the series his physical transformation was a representation of the character growth he'd experienced throughout the series. One of the best things about yyh was those dark, serious storylines being tempered by the foolish humor of a young boy playing the whole thing off for laughs with a devil may care attitude. Yusuke dies before out story even begins, why shouldn't he see every scenario he's in as a joke? All and all you laid out a great essay of the problems with the live adaptation. But man, my biggest issue is it just wasn't fun. How the writers could miss the mark that much blows my mind.
shit i just sold one of my drawing tablets lol i do have 2 others one i might be willing to let go its the smaller Wacom 472 as i have the big brother the 672 i'd be willing to ship it to her
I honestly felt like it wasn't that bad, but I agree I would have just preferred to have seen the actual anime instead considering how much gets cut and changed yet trying to keep the "highlights" of the show without the proper context. For me, the worse parts were mainky the Genkai training being reduced to just a training arc, instead of at least a mini tournament where Yusuke and Kuwabara may have gotten to fight against Randou or anothwr similar antagonist, and while I don't mind that Hiei kind of changed because the Yukina backstory came probably years after he was introduced - where he kind of is just a flat villain (at least that was my perception before he joined Team Yurameshi) - I found that I didn't like that it basically meant that he lost not only his history but also that according to this series, Hiei doesn't have that transformation that he used to fight Yusuke in the anime. I was legit wondering if they were gonna just skip the Hiei vs Yusuke fight until I saw Keiko was kidnapped by the fake Hiei. I do agree: the main issue this show has is mainly the writting and cuts, because for the most part, the actors do a decent job (did take me time to get used to Yusuke, but Kuwabara for me was the highlight, even if this one was more superficial; I thought the actor did a pretty good job encapsulating a "real life" Kuwabara, even with the lack of overexaggerated expressions.
This adaptation suffer the same thing Death Note did. IF you never see the original these are decent! But they take out alot of good content to just give a fast story.
I'd have preferred if the show never even made it to the dark tournament rather than getting the shit show of a "dark tournament" we did get. What wasted potential :'(
Wow you werent kiddingg about the music. I came up with titles for the tracks you showed lol. 1. Thats just Goldeneye 2. Generic RPG villian scene 3. Bowser battle?? 4. Generic RPG hometown before things go wrong
Mid? I thought it was a gigantic piece of garbage. Yusuke and Kuwabara looked okay.. and that's it. But this is like making a Dragon Ball series where kid Goku fights Freeza at end of 10 episodes
i wish they made it just like how the people made one piece live adaption.. its sad asf.. yyh is my top 3 anime n i dont really like the rest of the episodes of the live adaption
Fucking hated this show. The action can be cool, and it can still shit on the show. The fact that this was bad and generally forgettable because of it means theres no hope of a surge in fan interest leading to additional content.
Utter disappointment but not surprising, the only positive note is that maybe more people might enjoy the anime! Loved your video! Would love to do a meetup! Do you know why netflix even green lit the project ? I just dont understand why did they approach one piece differently than yu yu?? One piece is garbage overrrated shit compared to yyh
I haven't the slightest idea why Netflix decided to green light this, especially because YYH hasn't been in the mainstream eye for a LONG time. So maybe they thought not enough people would care if it turned out poorly?
I feel like a lot of these changes from the anime was to make it more understandable for audiences that haven't seen the original show. I've never been a big fan of live action adaptions, especially anime ones. There's very few that can make sense in a real-world setting. Instead of a live action adaptation, I would've preferred a continuation of the anime series.
They are wrong for having a positive impression of this garbage. It's an insult to the source material. This isnt a subjective issue. It is objectively bad. And when people who dont understand what constitutes a good story and keep PRAISING BAD MEDIA, it gives them license to keep MAKING bad media and hurts the quality of the media that the generation creates. So yeah, you saying that people dont have the right to criticize other people's bad taste in media is naivete at best, and ridiculousness at worst.
With all due respect, what right do you have to dictate what constitutes “bad taste” in media? If you personally didn’t like a show, that’s fine. But the fact that other people found at least one positive aspect of it really shouldn’t get to you. Not like this.
@@AbStar_xx Whenever the collective crappy tastes of the bulk of brain dead America is causing the entire industry to go downhill as far as quality, then yeah I have every right. But lets turn this right around on you, hypocrite. What right do you have to dictate a single thing I say? Maybe you should actually practice what you preach and don't engage. But you won't. Because you're clearly a hypocrite who is doing the exact same thing they're chastising another for. Step of your high horse and sit down when grownups are speaking.
What an immature take - and that's coming from a hardcore YYH fan since childhood who doesnt have a Netflix subscription specifically because I knew they'd eff this adaptation up. What makes companies keep putting out crap is MONEY. The problem isn't whether or not people can find something they enjoyed in a piece of media while also criticizing it. That's just nuance. I would be honestly shocked to hear that you've ever tried to write or create a decent piece of art...or aren't an edgy child

Also, are you in the discord server? I genuinely have no idea, but I enjoy your insight on things! Let me know if you ever want to collab on a topic~
@@SomewherePastNever I am! I’ll message you!
It's as if people feel like they HAVE to like these adaptations of anime and video games. They're so hungry for an adaptation that's actually good, that anything even slightly above quality is award winning to them.
Yea it’s pretty sad honestly 😂😂
He strikes me as the type of dude who will find anything and everything wrong with something, but he’s entitled to his opinion and i respect it.
Ugh already the fact we don't see Takanaka in the beginning is a letdown as his reaction to the accident shows how much the teacher REALLY cared for Yu.
@SomewherePastNever lets go. Been waiting on your review since the wasted potential of the Three Kings video.... you pretty much nail my views on it
Sorry to have kept you waiting!
Another case of wasted potential.
one of my favorite things about yu yu hakusho that this adaptation missed was something that a lot of action anime miss now which is the 4 or 5 episodes (i forgot) that yusuke had to grow and communicate with his friends even making friends with kuwubara and kuwubara's episode not being included where he helped his friends that episode was surprising and touching showing that kuwubara isnt the punk we saw in episode 1 and there was no building with yusuke and keiko's romantic hints while yusuke is dead and isnt able to easily talk with keiko.
The fights were phenomenal. Specifically, the one against the infected human and against goki step past that they rushed like four of the major arcs together, and I hate did that
No one but Chris Sabat could ever do Kuwabara justice
So many live action remakes it's getting hard to keep track of them all.
Only one I actually saw was the one piece one and I hope they use that to expand on the coby side of the story rather than Luffy as we already know his side. Coby could use the development as well as hibari prince gruce and co as they are basically the marine supernovas and oda really doesn't have the time to beef them up that fast or give them all more spotlight with what's going on. The live action can do that.
They tried to cram over sixty episodes into a five episode series, that's less then half the length of a normal short series why is it so short?
Outside of OP not one live action netflix show has brought NEW fans. It literally just pisses off old ones
The second I saw Hiei and his costume design I was checked out.
I felt that it was meh! Some changes I liked but I agree that those moments we love so much happened because it took time to get there. Rushing to the finish line only made those moments feel cheap.
In the manga his uniform was green because his mom can't affort a blue one
He does smoke in the Manga. Which at the time, it felt like they were paying homage. But when I saw people get angry about it, I realized not many know that. Then I realized maybe it was just as you said, an act of rebellion.
I swear I remember him smoking in the anime too, in the early episodes up on the school roof? Or am I just completely making that up?
@@damiencouturee6240nah he wasnt. he was just chilling when keiko came to get him.
@damiencouturee6240 in the anime he is just trowing a candy up to eat it and keiko grabs it, him smoking it's only in the manga
Bro this show was so rushed 😢 Netflix abused a legendary show for humanity once again. . Literally like rewatching the live adaptation is like itachi putting Sasuke in a genjutsu as a child..
I like this video but just wanted to say maybe sprinkle the patreon and sponsor stuff throughout bc its kinda hard to want to keep watching after 6 minutes of plugs and ads
good work just wanted to throw in my 2 cents
"Hi Yusuke I'm Genkai, here take my Spirit Orb"
Enjoyed the review!
The dark tournament should have been the 2nd season, the way they did it was way too rushed.
The fights the adaptation did exactly like they did in the anime:
Also I get why they'd want a one-to-one adaptation, mostly cuz it's THAT good of a series. I'm not really asking for that, more like I hope that they do all they can to elevate the story and characters that the anime would struggle to do, (even if only by character design) or yeah follow it closely. If it fails in many ways (especially like this), it's a waste of time
It's not even mid BUT, the fight scenes were dope
I like to think that since Hiei gave himself the jagan eye by this shows logic it didn’t take all his power so live action hiei is just casually low B class.
I swear if you don't like an adaptation the first defense is always someone saying "well it was never gonna be a 1 to 1 remake" like bro get Netflix nuts out your mouth and accept that it wasn't a good adaptation.
Right? My thing is if you can't get even remotely close to 1 to 1 then don't even do it.
Yusuke my goat
Thanks to your community post I was informed of the vid
Time to get the popcorn
Everything you spoke was what I was thinking while I watched this.
Maybe now on Netflix will make an anime sequel involving keiko and yusukes children
I thought they could use the twins of the first spirit detective, Kuroko Sato as the next heroes, Kaisei and Fubuki Sanada. You could jump ahead only a few years without making everyone on the original show middle aged.
Finally someone that gets me
“Big totally not chapter black hole”🤣😭
It’s amazing in an hour and a half long video I think I agree with every single point made here.
On the note about music, sometimes when I'm writing, i listen to the anime's music. I would not do that for the live action.
I don't understand why they always try to condense the whole story into one or two seasons
Also they didn't have Smile Bomb
It was alright, though I wish it was a bit longer with episodes and pacing.
I hated what Episode 4 did to Kuwabara. In Episode 3, he figured out how to use Spirit Sword but in the following Episode, he doesn't bother to try using it even when he knows Keiko and especially Yukina would've gotten hurt by the monster that tries attacking him. What was the point of his speech abouting being a man if he's gonna be treated as powerless as the girls when in the anime, Kuwabara would've easily dealt with a monster like that from the same arc?
.........let me tell you how I completely forgot that I watched the LA😂
😂😂😂
They really just made Sakyo Komaeda and called it a day. Which is funny because komaeda is a great character
I really wanted to give it a chance but it felt too inconsistent with the narrative they were going for.
It's not a great dub because it makes the direction of the actors disjointed. Pacing is too fast, great fight scenes to keep it short
Nice!! I caught up, a little late but...
Haha that training scene would make nasa proud
The actual video starts at ~7min.
shit i just sold one of my drawing tablets lol i do have 2 others one i might be willing to let go its the smaller Wacom 472 as i have the big brother the 672 i'd be willing to ship it to her
I honestly felt like it wasn't that bad, but I agree I would have just preferred to have seen the actual anime instead considering how much gets cut and changed yet trying to keep the "highlights" of the show without the proper context.
I thought it was terrible. The only character that fit was elder Tugoro.
To me this is one of the worst adaptations. Yes, the fighting is cool but that’s it. 🤷🏾♂️ They should have had season 1 focus on the Saint Beast Arc.
This adaptation suffer the same thing Death Note did. IF you never see the original these are decent! But they take out alot of good content to just give a fast story.
Literally just started, on the jumpsuit color, and its disgusting.
Edit: It doesn't get any better....
I'd have preferred if the show never even made it to the dark tournament rather than getting the shit show of a "dark tournament" we did get. What wasted potential :'(
Yeah, I watched it and couldn’t get through the first episode. I felt like it was rushed and it had so much potential. It was shit
I enjoyed the first two episodes. Then it went off a cliff.
Universus mentioned!
Never watched the live action, never will.
Wow you werent kiddingg about the music. I came up with titles for the tracks you showed lol.
1. Thats just Goldeneye
2. Generic RPG villian scene
I watched the first episode back when it came out and I instantly didn’t like it and I dropped the show the anime ten times better
Fucking hated this show. The action can be cool, and it can still shit on the show. The fact that this was bad and generally forgettable because of it means theres no hope of a surge in fan interest leading to additional content.
As an adaptatipn, ITS SUCKS. As itself...it's below average.
It crammed so much stuff in 5 episodes it made me bamboozled.
Netflix has been mediocre since inception. That’s why the last airbender sucked.
Needs more potatoes 10/10 video
This was a let down but it could have been worse
Yup. stressed speed run.
Aside from the production of the show it was bad. A rushed mess.
I didn't mind it the anime is still better
I was disappointed
Utter disappointment but not surprising, the only positive note is that maybe more people might enjoy the anime! Loved your video! Would love to do a meetup! Do you know why netflix even green lit the project ? I just dont understand why did they approach one piece differently than yu yu?? One piece is garbage overrrated shit compared to yyh
I haven't the slightest idea why Netflix decided to green light this, especially because YYH hasn't been in the mainstream eye for a LONG time. So maybe they thought not enough people would care if it turned out poorly?
The adaptation was TRASH. SUCH WASTED POTENTIAL.
BOST
@@herefortheshrimp1469 You lost any leg you had to stand on when you liked your own comment. How desperate for validation can a person be? People like you are what is contributing to this wave of trash media. Grow up.

No good anime needs a live action adaptation.
I like the show because because it's anime. Making it live action ruins it 99.9% of the time.
