This is the review that I've been scared about the most because people either love it or think it's just awful. To me this is my favorite zombie movie by far & one of my favorite movies out there😏 I totally get how the screaming gets annoying honestly I do but how i see it is that these people have been trapped so long in a place that's dark & claustrophobic that you are bound to go crazy if you aren't of sound mind(fun fact: they cast & crew almost never saw the light of day during filming & the silo had so much mold & toxic elements in the air that most of the crew got sick which makes it more real to me) I really appreciate how you like the score because most people don't & that's very refreshing😁 Thank you for giving this movie a go Cody! It's not for everyone but I appreciate your honesty as always!

Yeah the reason why they're screaming though is to get the attention of the zombies so there is a purpose with an element of craziness to it

Again a distinction to make is that these people have been underground for over a year and as their head in command dies at the beginning of the film they are experiencing obvious cabin fever, obvious lack of resources, obvious weaning sanity and realistic reactions to the steaks at hand. There is a disillusionment that what is going on isn’t really going on and that politics and bureaucracy rule everything beyond survival, which is why everyone is so depressed and grim in this film.

Love the channel Cody been following you for a while now and I think your film reviews are the best on RUclips. I don't always agree (My Bloody Valentine for example) but they are always intelligent and fair. Another great review of a film I love. Grew up with Romero's dead films and this has always been my favourite. Yep and the practical effects are outstanding, this and the effects in The Thing are the best in any film in my opinion.

This movie is a classic for any horror or zombie movie fan. The scenes where the guy gets his head ripped off while he is screaming and the part where the guy gets ripped in half, the special effects in those 2 scenes blew me away. No CGI back then so those were physically done which is just mind boggling. The guy is screaming as his head is pulled off and his voice pitches upwards as they are pulling and it just looks so real. Anyone who is in to old school special effects that hasn't seen this should really watch it. Trust me, those 2 scenes are amazing!

I love Day of the Dead. My favorite scene has too be when Sarah just loses all emotional control and cry's, it shows just how scarier humans can be than the undead. It's a dark slow moving film that is different from Dawn of the Dead, and while it may not be as good at times, it's still a brilliant film in it's own right.

I think he's missing a BIG part of the point about the characters. Cap. Rhodes, Rickles, Steel and the others are military, so would have been aggressive to a point anyway. Also they would most likely have been reservists and not battle or stress tested. They are then put underground with non military with no specific job to do. The world's population is ALL zombies except for them. They are cracking. They are going insane from the situation. Is it so unrealistic for them to be "dialed up" some?? Hell I served with some guys like that without a zombie apocalypse.

    My favorite in this order:

    2. Dawn

Day of the Dead is my favorite of the original Romero Trilogy (Though Dawn is very close). And I think the two things that really do it for me are the claustrophobia and the score. The score in this movie is one of the most dreadful, eerie scores in the history of cinema and could not do a better job of presenting this movie to you, absolute masterclass of cinema here.

Fantastic intro; looking forward to the next installments.
Interesting how I liked the first two films more than you did, but liked this one less, although I generally agree with you on the main strengths & weaknesses here. I can understand, to a degree, the characters being so hyped-up having been stuck down there for so long (which is what’s usually trotted out by the film’s defenders), but here it just plays as one-note and overdone. Had the characters been toned down - not just the military guys, but everybody - then I’d probably like this almost as much as the first two films.
This was the biggest issue people had when the film was first released (and why its reviews were the worst of the original trilogy by far), and while its esteem has risen quite a bit over the years, with many now saying it matches or even exceeds the first two movies, I think the initial reaction was the right one.
The big theme of people not being able to cooperate with each other even when their survival depends on it was already done in the first film - and done a bit better, since we see the characters’ arcs more fully as opposed to starting near their end-points like we do here - so for me the movie's biggest strengths are the finale and the amazing effects by Tom Savini, who has said they’re his best-ever work. As for how they progress in future movies . . . you may be disappointed, since those are a little heavy on digital blood & gore. This film is the effects peak of the two trilogies.
Romero himself has called this one the best of his six zombie movies, and Survival (the last one) second-best, but I don’t agree with him (on either film). I think you’ll like Land of the Dead, which if anything should play a little better now than it did on first release given everything that’s happening at the moment, but not sure what you’ll think of Diary or Survival. (I actually liked Diary the most of the second trilogy, but I’m in a pretty small minority on that.)

I feel sorry for Joe Pilato, who plays Rhodes. The entrails had gone bad before his death scene and they had no choice but to use them and only the zombies were able to plug their noses. Poor bastard was stuck in the floor doing his best to not throw up.

Piece of cool trivia, the guts were real, they were pig guts. When Rhodes was torn apart, his real body was under the floor and he was in hell because someone on the crew unplugged the refrigerator where they kept the guts over the weekend so they went rotten but still had to use them. So Joe Pilato was forced to lay there with the stench of rotten pig guts all over him. Said he fought back puking throughout the scene.

Nicotero loves this movie because it's where his career really started. I watched DOTD with his (and the other FX guys) commentary and they all get so excited when they see these FX - especially the first throat tear, about half way through the movie. I've also seen Romero say this is his favourite of that trilogy. John Harrison's score is absolutely brilliant. But of all the things this movie can be remembered for, I'd say it's the genius of Tom Savini. From that era, only The Thing's practical gore FX dazzles more.

That opening skit! Dude, you should do more of those! Seriously! Also, zombie and vampire movies in general aren't really my thing. Too trendy, too much of the same. There are, however exceptions: Zombie movies I dig are Shaun Of The Dead, Zombieland 1 and 2, and the remake of one of the original Romero trilogy, don't remember which. Came out in '05(I believe), starred Ving Rhames and took place at a mall. Vampire movie exceptions: Bram Stoker's Dracula('92 or '93), that cult classic vampire\western mix from '87(I believe), and, of course, " The Lost Boys". Not only is this my favorite vampire movie ever, it's one of my top movies ever, genre be damned. I have the original on DVD, plus I have a "Lost Boys" triple pack DVD set. Original movie, sequel, prequel. The second two are ok, but pale in comparison to the original!

I enjoyed Day Of The Dead mainly because it was unlike the first two Romero movies. It worked to establish that the zombies may have some intelligent left. That and it didn't have to have a hero in order to tell the story. In my opinion Day Of The Dead was unique because it attempted to take the zombie genre in another direction. Rather than be senseless zombie killing it was trying to domesticate them. That concept alone made the story in the movie much better.

The original should be labeled as Scifi/Thriller as there was nothing horror about it.

I always feel dread in the movie I dont think the characters are supposed to be super likeable. They are scared and shouldn't even really be alive the world is over and they are still hidden away in some dark corner, they dont know what to do. there lost.
edit: also this movie has a less than 4 million dollar budget, Romero had much more planned for it. Despite this it was still his favorite (RIP). For reference, Dawn had a 28 million dollar budget.

I always thought it had buckets of tension. That's what made it great. Growing up I found the zombies really scary, which heightened the tension. If you didn't find the zombies creepy then you won't find it tense.
As a super fan of the movie, (I've just read Lee Karr's book, recommended reading if you have an obsession with the film). If I were to critique it, my only complaint, as someone who's watched it many times, some of the zombie extra's sucked and not enough was done. Pat Buba who edited the film said he worked hard to try and edit some of them out of the movie but just couldn't without making it disjointed. The production should have worked harder to coral the extra's. The system they had fell apart, hero zombie extra's and background zombies were allowed to mix, so what you had were background extra's sneaking up the front with crap make up to selfishly get on camera.

Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead, all very good pieces of filmmaking, to the point where it's hard (for me) to pick a favorite. They're all great for a lot of different reasons. But I do love the doomed, apocalyptic feel of Day..., and how the living were now in the minority. And as far as gore and practical effects go, BRAVO! Some of Tom Savini's best work ever (that and his work in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2). Loved when Rhodes gets torn apart, and his buddies too. And when that zombie strapped to the table suddenly turns over and all of his insides spill out of him and splat on the floor, that was ultimate gore-porn stuff right there. Too bad they don't make'em like they used to, huh?

The movie is great to watch now for the effects, but was scary as a kid because it seemed darker and gorier than DOTD. The thought of being trapped underground with nowhere to go against a horde of zombies following you gave me nightmares. The beginning and ending are the highlights for me.

I'm still terrified of this movie 35 years later after watching the first time aged 8! Best zombie, harrowing, petrifying and the special effects for the time...we wouldn't have TWD and a million other zombie movies if it wasn't for this franchise! Best zombie movie of all time never been replicated!!( not scary and dreadful> what the hell were you watching)

Very fair review. I love all the Romero stuff but this is his weakest by far due to pacing and likability of the cast and story. Thanks for the time an review Cody been a blast to see you cover the OG trilogy.

I actually liked the fact that this movie in a sense blurs the line between protagonist and antagonist.

Yeah...sadly Romero’s first 3 flicks are zombie classics that go downhill later on. Land is ok, Diary is mediocre, and I never bothered with Survival. But 1978’s Dawn of the Dead is still a masterpiece

Cody, I'm also a horror fan who isn't a huge fan of the zombie sub genre. Bruce Campbell once said on a late night talk show interview "Zombies aren't scary. They're dumb, they're slow..." and so on. But I have to ask, have you seen the Return of the Living dead series? From what I understand there is a big ugly back story that caused Romero to depart from the LIVING dead series and that's why we have dawn and day after night.
