Hello, Thanks for this video. This beautiful pipe !!! It must be great to have little hummingbirds in your garden. What a pleasure for the eyes. Good end of weekend.
Hey Kevin, you look pretty natural smoking that churchwarden. One time when I was hanging up a hummingbird feeder I heard a buzzing by my ear and I thought it was a bumble bee. I waved my hand at it to make it move away. It turned out to be a hummingbird who backed up flying against my hand and then followed it right back. It was a male and he sat there beating in my ear until I finished putting it up and climbed back down the ladder. He decided he was going to be first to the feeder. Luckily it was a gentle wave of my hand. I would have felt terrible otherwise. Have a good one.

I have the smooth finished version of this pipe. I don’t smoke it often, due to the reasons you mentioned. I do love the styling of it, though. I will load it up with some HH burley flake tomorrow and have a quiet smoke.
I'm looking for a "Tolkien" pipe and teetering between the Savinelli 601 & the 921. I like how the 921 looks, but you mentioned that the 601 has the most curved stem of all the Savinelli Churchwardens. That curve will make it comfortable to hold and smoke. Thank you for the detailed review and helping me decide. I will definitely go with the 601. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

Hello Kevin. Your cherchwarner pipes are beautiful. I love cherchwarner pipes. I have 5 of them. I think they got their name near the Middle Ages from the church night watchmen who smoked them to stay awake without the smoke bothering their faces. Have a nice day!
Yes, that’s what I’ve heard as well! They could still smoke while minimizing any smoke that might get around their eyes so they could still see as well as possible :)
Thanks for the great videos. I have a Cobbiton Shire but really want a more LOTR type churchwarden. For just smoking enjoyment, would you prefer this or one of the MacQueens?
It really depends on my mood. This Sav is excellent. But for LOTR authenticity, sometimes I want a wooden stem like this one: ruclips.net/video/hV7FjaswA1E/видео.htmlsi=9v0edp5sx4Qzp2Hf This series is the ultimate tho: ruclips.net/video/YTbUJzWU_dQ/видео.htmlsi=fF0fyp68N_Sclp19
Thank you for your input. The Vaun would be great but it’s a bit out of my current price range. I think I’m leaning more toward the Sav for sheer smoking enjoyment over the more LOTR authentic Mac. Although I’m waiting to see if Mac has a Black Friday sale tomorrow then I will make my decision. Thanks again for your videos. I’m new to the pipe smoking hobby and have learned a lot from you.
Great video my friend. I noticed all these are a year old. Have you not bought any pipes since you did this series? I would love to see some of your newer pipes if you have any new ones. God bless you. Have a great weekend. John.
I love my Savinelli 601 churchwarden with some Capstan blue! I just got into pipes a couple months ago and I'm really enjoying them so far. I've been a cigar smoker for a while and currently have over 1000 cigars in my humidor but the past 2 months I've smoked nothing but pipes as I try to learn the art. My biggest complaint is a bowl just doesn't last long enough lol. I'm used to smoking 2 or 3 cigars back to back at 1-2 hours each... so a 30-45 minute bowl just leaves me wanting more. I picked up a Rossi Lucca 8320EX just to get a bigger bowl and it's probably my favorite pipe right now.
Search produced this video as I am looking at Savinelli 601 CW. I too have a cobbit shire and it is one of the best smokers on the shelf. I am torn between Clark's Favorite or a true Churchwarden.
Great to see you here! You’ll likely end up with both: a mid length option and a full length option. You’ll probably find yourself reaching for the mid length more often but then reaching for the full length when you really have time to sit and relax and do nothing else. Both are great!
Greetings from the food basket of England, Royal Tunbridge Wells, in Kent! I just ordered two cobs, the gent and the shire from MM. Are cobs suited to any style of tobacco? Loose, plug etc? What do you (and the pipes) prefer?
Great cob choices! Many prefer to smoke their aromatics in cobs because they are more resistant to “ghosting”, many also enjoy smoking their over the counter / drugstore codger blends in cobs as well. Really though, cobs can smoke any tobacco just fine. As you experience more pipes you will form your own personal preferences :)
A fine story about the Savinelli 601, Kevin. It is a great looking pipe that the all black finish sets off quite nicely. lol I almost didn't get to your story - I had to linger over that steak dinner before moving on 😍 Churchwardens are a special part of a pipe collection. They look back to the days when clay pipes were the order of the day when men gathered at the inns and taverns to share a pint, a pipe, and a good story. Here's one for you to search for - and probably add to your wish list IMP Meerschaum » Smooth Bent Apple with Silver (with Case and Churchwarden Stem). I'm guessing that it would appeal to you. Hummingbirds are amazing, but, yes, aggressively territorial. Be well, stay safe, and keep rockin' down the road of awesome - peace
Important question. So, I appreciate the pipe community here. Do ANY of you smokers suffer from high blood pressure? I have high blood pressure and want to smoke pipe as well. Do any of you deal with this?
Unfortunately I’m not a doctor. I developed high blood pressure due to stress. Pipe smoking significantly lowered my stress levels. Your experience may be different.

@@UkeDad great question Bob. This Savinelli 601 churchwarden is going to last a lifetime, but it has a less authentic middle earth feel in comparison to the MacQueen Ranger. The MacQueen has a much more authentic middle earth feel due to its wood stem construction, but that real wood stem will naturally degrade a bit over time….great care must be taken in keeping it clean and being diligent not to bite that wood stem. So, the choice is yours, and prices are actually similar :)
I dont have many choices. Is this is a good first pipe ? I was quite worried about tongue bite, is this a concern with this one ? Or should i just get one that accepts charcoal filters ? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Have to pay 30pounds just for shipping.
Tongue bite normally has more to do with your cadence and tobacco choice than the pipe itself, although using a filtered pipe does help some people. If you’re concerned you may want to consider 9mm filtered pipe options.
@@hobbitonpiper all right thank you. I heard some complaints about this pipe breaking for some people. Do you think thats a concern ? Hope you dont mind me asking so many questions lol. I live in a developing country so very limited choices and Savinelli surprisingly ships where I live directly from their official website. So want to make sure.
@@maklame3318 I don’t know why it would break unless someone is dropping it or banging the long stem on something or not taking proper care to make sure the bowl doesn’t get too hot causing burnout. Savinelli makes great factory pipes.
Same way as with a short tobacco pipe, but your draw may need to be a bit stronger/longer at first to get the tobacco lit. Once it’s lit it’s pretty much the same draw
If you are talking about gurgle, slow way down and sip the pipe. Smoking too fast causes excessive steam and moisture to build up making for a “wet” smoke. That being said, if the pipe was drilled improperly it could be the cause, but that’s unlikely with a Savinelli factory pipe.
