Just for some clarity. While Dancing Queen shares the same beat and structure as Mercy they're two completely different songs lyrically. Short backstory. SM had acquired the rights to "Mercy" back in 2008 and had written and produced Dancing Queen. This is a common practice overseas where a music company will pay for a song/beat under the idea that the other company agrees to sit on it for potentially several years. However, this didn't happen. Mercy was released and SM scrambled to find a replacement song/title track for the comeback. As a result, they chose a song SO bubble gum it literally made Taeyeon cry at the thought of having to sing it... The MV set was redesigned, the outfits were tweaked and GEE took the KPOP world by storm. Dancing Queen was shelved. When SNSD was preparing for it's "I GOT A BOY" comeback, SM decided to release DQ MV as a special, for lack of better phrasing, hype video to excite fans. Thus the reason the intro has the girls traveling through time to 2008 when Dancing Queen was made. At least to the best of my knowledge this is how it went down.
