I'm so fortunate to have had him as my 4th and 5th grade teacher. Playing the World Peace Game was amazing, and to this day, I still believe Mr. Hunter is one the best teachers I've ever had.
i'm almost just as blessed as Mr. Hunter. he was my proud teacher for 2 years, and i've played the world peace game 3 times. i'm the first one to learn how to run the world peace game, and he has already agreed to pass it on to me. and even though he won't live forever, i feel like he is the greatest teacher i'll ever have.
Mr. Hunter you are an inspiration to educators, children, parents, and people everywhere. Your take on education teaches children far beyond skills needed to pass tests. May you continue to inspire creativity, communication, and action in children. May more educators teach in such a manner.
This is pure genius. From an educational standpoint, to social and political aspirations for tomorrow, this education experiment is incredibly successful. Teaching 4th graders critical thought and application of critical thought, without relying on textbook and having the engagement of a game, it's an achievement. I see these kids in the video footage and I know they can think, which is far more important than learning.
As a past student I can personally say that the man that you see on that stage is the same as the man that is in the classroom. I feel very privileged to have met and been taught by him. If all teachers were universally like him then I believe we really could achieve world peace.
When people I meet start talking about speeches, this is the first one I respond with. John has such an incredible respect for things that we take for granted. I've worked with dozens of community builders and they're always taken aback that a handful of then year-olds solved socioeconomic problems that even our peers haven't been able to successfully tackle. I hope, one day, to have John's wisdom and be able to pass on this learning to our next world leaders.
Take a bow. What an incredible guy :O Kids have impeccable logic when you geode them into problems. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best one. I'd love to see this kind of learning in every schools curriculum.
Comments mention that this game should be in every 4th grade, but why stop there? It should be part of the entire school curriculum, so children will grow, mature and develop year after year with the game into adulthood.
This should be in every school in the country. Too often schools become conveyor belts where children come in, are taught something and they go out. They learn facts, but not the critical thinking skills to apply them in the real world. This a great teaching tool that allows children to learn by "doing" and offers a chance for children to learn new ideas spontaneously. Children become engaged and retain more with this type of teaching rather than sitting at their desks and listening totheteacher
During 16 years I worked as Senior TV Programmer of nationwide broadcasted educational TV channel in Brazil and I was very proud to acquire the rights of this UNIQUE documentary and aired in my country. This is a jewel thanks to this amazing man, Mr. Hunter and that pure-harted and brilliant children!!!
John Hunter is a great man. It is so rare to find a teacher like this, with the wisdom he has displayed in this talk. The game itself is a great thing, but I don't think it could be detached from great teachers. We need more like him in the world.
I'd love to visit his classroom, Very inspirational stuff... I'd love even more to meet his students, Or meet them in twenty years. Keep up the great work John.
My geography teacher, has made her own version of this game. She eMailed John Hunter, and he told her he could not tell her the exact rules, but to make her own version and share it with her students. I am a Freshman in high school and love this game.
My students and I just created our own version too. I'd love to hear more about your experience. Does your teacher have a website where she or any of your classmates have written about it? You can see what ours looks like at drawalot.com/learn/?p=5522
It is an unfortunate fact that our system of education frowns upon this sort of teaching style and it will never be adopted under the current leadership. Hats off to mr. Hunter and all of his students who had the opportunity to learn from and with him.
If only there were more teachers so innovative and so invested in our children. I've known only a few teachers that good but i truly believe they have changed what I am and done so not through forcing their ideas on me but through letting me gain an understanding of how the world works. Every single one of them has taught me more than all the other teachers combined and I am thankful for that. Our children are the future and if we can teach them like this we can create a better world.
Best inspiration and idea: "Spontaneous Compassion" Imagine children growing up with that kind of thinking, negotiation skills, compassion and insight!
We seriously NEED to rethink how we educate our kids. Our current educational systems are relics from the dark ages - yes, even the best ones in the world. This kind of engagements are wonderful additions.
I have never heard of this program and am so very glad I came across it while researching for my Educational playology business. I hope to become a certified World Peace Game Facilitator, now. This is phenomenal and absolutely necessary for social and academic development. Round of applause creators.
Thank You, Mr. John Hunter ... for caring so much to take the time to come up with such a game. I will look into this much more. Have you heard of, "World Beyond War"??? The world needs folks who understand that this sort of program needs to be everywhere. Love & Peace to All
the only single lession in school i still remember is a game my politics-teacher played with us. it was a lot simpler, we 'only' had the parties of government to discuss about issues, but I still learned more from it than any textbook.
This video was posted over 3 and a half years ago. I wonder in that time, how many teachers tried to apply it. What's the success rate. One man teaching one class won't do much, but if it can be successfully replicated in classrooms across the world, maybe the next generation of politicians may have a chance of solving the real problem.
Mr John Hunter, You are an inspiration and I wish other teacher could and would learn to open there minds to teach as special as you. We all have gifted children and if given an opportunity and placed in the right settings our little generation can and will make a large impact on out global world. You have already planted the little acorn seed which in time the mighty oak grows. There must be a way to open other teachers to what you are doing becasue little butterflies can change the world.
This is just amazing - I wish roleplaying didn't have the stigma it does, so more people like John will realise the learning capabilities it has inherently.
A few minutes into this talk i was thinking that the rest of the talk will be about bong hits and platforms. I got my joint rolling tray ready but after watching it this was one of the best talks in a while. I wish my daughters school had this game.
Conmovedor tanto en tono como en contenido. El poder de la introducción de las dinámicas de juego en entornos formativos es una oportunidad que no podemos permitirnos el lujo de dejar escapar.
WOW! simply wow at last the children have a voice and not ONLY that but the children have the answers. It's sad to realize exactly how much more humane children are than we are, and that if and when we stop pacifying them with rubbish and so-called "entertainment" they manifest wisdom greater than ours, compassion deeper than ours and selflessness more powerful than the act itself. I pray that this game be taken with the seriousness it deserves. Bravo Mr. Hunter
awe inspiring :) i wish i could meet Mr Hunter have a coffee talk about life. this idea is incredible. i am 20 and have learnt something beautiful from a 9 year old.. our world is already starting to shape up. this is incredibly positive something to share and get out there for everybody to witness. anything is possible. peace is the gateway. one love
@idiallin Kahn Academy is not about classroom games, it's about having students look at lectures at home and coming to the classroom to answer questions and do hands-on practice, mostly in math and science. This guy's approach (which I think is the best educational approach) is game-based learning.
"...children should be conscious that man is one family, the world is our common homeland and that a system of international governance is indispensable for world stability and world peace." - Baha'i Thought
Please create a wiki outlining the workings of the game. I'm also a teacher and watching this all I could think about how this works and how I could implement it. You could even tie in current affairs, taking an event and randomising the affected country
When I look at how passive we've become, I can't help but think that the most important thing this game teaches isn't to necessarily take the right action, as that can be completely subjective, but to take action at all. the interactivity breeds activity, it makes you involved, it makes you care, it makes it real. And it is real - so it's about time we're at least taught to treat it as such.
though I totally agree with your point, it think some of that critical thinking must also come greatly from the children's parents which has a tremendous impact into a child's confidence and foundation. As Mr. Hunter himself said "My first teachers...inspiration."
I lived in a developing country for almost 18 years, but I moved out after that. What I learned after watching such this video is that, there's no such things happen in developing countries, which I mean the relationship between teacher and students, the high motivation to achieve something great,or even the involvement of both students and teacher. I believe that something great that might happen, if only both developed and developing country were associated in order to make a better fundamentalism in area education. world peace ;D
would be really interesting to see this game placed into software and uploaded online and then see how the results play through. Maybe then we could get some statistical trends on how most people think one issue should be solved and the success rate.
This is interesting and magnificent! And admirable - just imagine how much of a world issues education this could be worth. I was feeling skeptical at first but he had me deeply inspired by the end.
What I great video! Definitely helps me consider my own pedagogy as a social studies teacher. I think we could really benefit from Mr. Hunter's insight in an age where red tape and overbearing standards and tests have really stifled authentic learning.
You don't have to dumb down anything for students. It's called scaffolding and supporting student learning. You would be amazed what children can accomplish when you actually teach and not put them in boxes because they aren't labeled gifted. Or assume they can't do something because you don't know how to teach it. Get your self efficacy up.
Why aren't all of our children participating in these games. This really touched me, and angered me at the same time, that we "as adults" can not allow our hearts to care like this.
This game seems great. I wish i could have played it when i was growing up. I love strategy games, and was playing on my own on a level comparable to casual gamer adults at about age 9-10. I learned a lot from Age of Empires, Civilization, Sim City, various Tycoon games, and many more. I give credit for a lot of this love for strategy games to a local chess master that tought me how to play in kindergarden when i was 4 years old :) (he was the husband of one of the women working there)
@Jotto999 You said the problem lies in politicians and their policies and not in the socioeconomic system itself, if I understood you correctly... I was trying to explain why I think it's the opposite.
@xjustamem0ryx Wholeheartedly agree. Always thought it strange that we wait until post-education to start talking about things like ethics and philosophy.
this kinda made my cry... if we had this game in school when i was growing up two weeks in i would have been emperor :)) just joking... that's not how this game is won, unfortunately that's the real world's way of trying to win, of course no one does, they just battle continuously. this man must be one of the most briliant teachers ever!!! total respect, diffrent versions of this game should be played all over the world in social studies, history, economy, and other classes.
I'm so fortunate to have had him as my 4th and 5th grade teacher. Playing the World Peace Game was amazing, and to this day, I still believe Mr. Hunter is one the best teachers I've ever had.
lucky
Thanks for sharing. I am very interested in this game. Do you have a contact ot Mr. Hunter for me?
i'm almost just as blessed as Mr. Hunter. he was my proud teacher for 2 years, and i've played the world peace game 3 times. i'm the first one to learn how to run the world peace game, and he has already agreed to pass it on to me. and even though he won't live forever, i feel like he is the greatest teacher i'll ever have.

We need more teachers like him and more classes like that in all the different levels.
As a past student I can personally say that the man that you see on that stage is the same as the man that is in the classroom. I feel very privileged to have met and been taught by him. If all teachers were universally like him then I believe we really could achieve world peace.

I like his approach. He has warm heart, smart mind and with such teachers we will be capable create society based on love, truth, and freedom.
I've watched a couple of hundred TEDtalks now and this has to be one of my favourites. It is a lucky child indeed who gets this man for a teacher...
I would be fascinated to compare these kids with a group of adults playing the same game
Take a bow. What an incredible guy :O
Kids have impeccable logic when you geode them into problems. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best one. I'd love to see this kind of learning in every schools curriculum.
The man had such humility and delivery throughout the speech. It's in itself is a winning game created by a winning person.

As a fellow teacher, thank you Mr. Hunter for being inspiring!!!

+CallMeXecutioner I love that response. I just applied for a grant to design this and bring it to our school.

I wish I could have had even just one teacher half as good as this guy.
I played this game back in fifth and sixth grade, and I so very much wish I could play it again.
Outstanding. This is a very inspirational talk & as a teacher I love it!
This was really heartwarming! Thank you!
Oh shoot, I remember this game. Mr. Hunter was pretty chill. I wonder if he's still at Agnor Hurt. Go gators!
i find that sometimes, even though i may be akward, i must clap to my computer screen for a great speaker such as this.

It was hard to get through this without shedding a few tears

As of today this man is the greatest teacher ever, and I want my daughter to be playing that game in her school immediately.
i wish i had a class like that when i was younger.
Please create a wiki outlining the workings of the game. I'm also a teacher and watching this all I could think about how this works and how I could implement it.

i wish he did another talk explaining the game Fully!
My favorite teacher EVER!
Big shout to what teaching should be. Inspiring video.
Thanks for uploading!
I really liked this. I wish I had this kind of game when I was in school.
God bless you!!!
Outstanding.
Very inspiring!
Thank you.
First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others. Grate video
I really want to see what these kids are like in 20 years or so. Amazing stuff, Mr. Hunter.
I was skeptical when I started watching this, but he really won me over.
would be really interesting to see this game placed into software and uploaded online and then see how the results play through. Maybe then we could get some statistical trends on how most people think one issue should be solved and the success rate.
i had no idea teachers like this even existed. my school experience was so disappointingly inadequate in comparison.
Indefatigably, thank you. And anyone like you.
This is interesting and magnificent! And admirable - just imagine how much of a world issues education this could be worth. I was feeling skeptical at first but he had me deeply inspired by the end.
Mr Hunter, we need a World peace game for adults, obviously kids know how to play it and are good at it.
Every classroom in every school in every country should play that game.
What I great video! Definitely helps me consider my own pedagogy as a social studies teacher. I think we could really benefit from Mr. Hunter's insight in an age where red tape and overbearing standards and tests have really stifled authentic learning.
khan academy should put this game on their website.
what a nice guy.

I would send my nine year old to this man's class in a heartbeat. And I hate public school more than almost anything.
Sounds like this game should be in all schools.
Where can i watch the film?
I thought it was slightly disturbing that kids were playing war games and sending troops to war until he talked about the letter. Brilliant.
that would of been awesome if we did that in primary school. damn.
we need an online version of the world peace game.
Awesome and amazing, thank you, thank you!
He's making real life Ender Wiggins'. That's pretty awesome.
Thank you for this

Sincerely brilliant.
this is simply awesome!
@Jotto999 You said the problem lies in politicians and their policies and not in the socioeconomic system itself, if I understood you correctly... I was trying to explain why I think it's the opposite.
That's one of the fucking best ted talks I've ever seen..
This is the kind of thinking we need! Brilliant stuff.
@xjustamem0ryx Wholeheartedly agree. Always thought it strange that we wait until post-education to start talking about things like ethics and philosophy.
I miss Mr. Hunter! I played this game!
We need a system that lets teachers have the freedom to do these things.
I would have LOVED to have had this opportunity.
I'm looking forward
Incredible video--has helped me to rethink my own pedagogy.
Thank you 💜💜💜
this kinda made my cry... if we had this game in school when i was growing up two weeks in i would have been emperor :)) just joking... that's not how this game is won, unfortunately that's the real world's way of trying to win, of course no one does, they just battle continuously.
