Hey Nate - well, I'm no Tug Of War expert - but I do know that in this case they are classed be the total weight of the team. So they need athletes with a high strenght to weight ratio - not just "big" team members.

How did they come up with the shoe wear? The soles of the shoe look at least 4" tall with the cutting edge on it as well.
Well that's a good question - sorry, but I don't know the answer.
Looks like a thick plate of steel. Maybe it's maximizing the weight they're allowed to wear.
