⚠️ Why I won’t get an X-Ray ⚠️ (please read…) Originally I called my vet to schedule an X-Ray. Which surprisingly was only about $250 plus the visit which they can definitely use. BUT… we decided bringing them in would be stressful and set them back. Especially since at the time only the left head was eating. Also since an X-Ray is not the best for baby animals. I do still want to get one within a few weeks once I know they are ready. I am really curious to see their anatomy.

the poop hole being shared would indicate at some point their intestines connect, but it depends entirely on when it connects for nutrient circulation or something idk

You should probably look into forms of food that are super nutrient dense so that you don't have to feed them so much, and you don't have to worry about caloric intake as they get bigger.
Blood worms are about as nutrient dense as you can get when they’re this small. You can feed them brine shrimp but a brine shrimp setup can be challenging to keep going for one animal. As they get older you can feed them a more varied diet but right now he’s feeding them the best thing he can🥰

@@atomdecaythey’re in shallow water. they can’t be completely submerged because their body isn’t great at moving and they’d drown, because they can’t swim properly. they literally have two heads lmao

Since they presumably only have one circulatory system, which is where the nutrients end up anyways, I very much doubt it matters which of them eats. A stomach breaks down the food, the bowels absorb the nutrients, and it goes into their blood stream.
Agreed. Wonder how much more calories it needs to supply a seconf head. Head in humans is expensive energy wise. Something like 20% of our energy goes to our brains.

Lots of animals like sloths and koalas that don’t get a lot of energy from their food sacrifice brain power because they don’t need it. Not too many thoughts need to go through your head when you spend your whole life sitting in a tree sleeping 20 hours a day.

Okay I'm super invested now. Once I worked at a pet store and first thing in the morning a lady brought me 3 red eared sliders her daughter stole and was keeping in her drawer. I had to nurse them back to health. (And we got a cover for our turtle tank)
How did they do? Did they make it through? Also I’m assuming that these guys were small babies but thank you for locking it in my brain to check my child for random things that may not belong to them.

hey! love what you’re doing. but i would suggest using gloves while handling bloodworms as anybody can develop a severe allergy to them, which will in turn be triggered by other daily things. be careful
My worry about the second head eating is if the head ISNT connected to same stomach, but IS connected to the same blood stream- That would mean that there is a stomach which not connected intestines or it empty directly into the shell/the other turtle. Which would mean its eating can actually harm it. I understand Xray have issues, but i worried that the other guy eating might actully harm them both. Regardless, dont take too much to heart the comments. You do the best to your understanding, and you cant do better than your own judgement. Whatever happens will not be your fault, as there is no right answer, animals with two heads have low survival rate for a reason. You do amazing job caring for those little fellas. ❤
sepsis would've set in pretty early on if one of them were emptying or even leaking their waste into their shared bloodstream, but just because that hasn't become an issue doesn't mean it wont, a blockage or rupture in the bowel is I'm assuming a constant consideration he's making when feeding these guys. the confidence, compassion and patience it takes to attempt to care for two animals like this is seriously impressive as well, plus on the outside they don't have any serious or unusual deformations aside from the obvious and both of them clearly have the will to live, all of which is encouraging! :)
I'm not sure you'd be able to tell how the GI tract is laid out with imaging, particularly with an animal this tiny and delicate. I'm no vet, but MRIs (the ones that work best to see soft tissue, like organs) take time and need the animal to stay still. You'd need to put them under, it'd be incredibly risky and you may still not be able to see anything. Even if you do see something's off, there's very little you can do. Best thing, imo, is to keep a close eye on them and address issues as they arise. They probably won't survive, but it's worth trying. (If they do pass away, I'd love to see a dissection/drawing of how everything was laid out. I'd rather they live, though :) )

Im sure I’ve seen others suggest it but you should definitely try and get them X-Rayed to see what the organs are like, and you could solve the stomach issue i’m sure! I hope this baby lives a long time!

If such a condition exists they’re dead anyway and its irrelevant as its unfixable.
