    So far it's been great. I normally fly in pretty open spaces and haven't gone too far out (< .25 mi). I have a failsafe return to launch setup just in case something like this happens. As I venture further out I will continue to test and post if I run into any problems with short range limits. Thanks for pointing this out. I wasn't aware of it as everyone that I've read with FrSky raves about its range.

    I think you're right about different physical models.
    I had to disassemble the unit, took off the PCB from rear wall, removed the unnesessary plastic with pliers and then assembled all this stuff back. Only after that it was possible to install the FrSky module into my Turnigy 9X, and I was not only one who messed up with it ;)

    Good Q. I switched from Spektrum last year mainly because I couldn't afford the DX8. I had the DX5e and needed more channels, but was drawn into the Turnigy hype. I've been really impressed with the Turnigy 9X and the only drawback that I've had is the 9X menu takes a bit of work to learn.

  • @tstein
    @tstein 11 лет назад

    Dennis, you are my hero:) Among some other things I learned to set up my Turnigy 9x three mode switch and failsafe with the Dji Naza from you. I already had the FrSky Module, but for some reason I bought the Turnigy 9xr to use with it. But the 9xr is completely different and difficult to set up. So now I`m very happy with my 9x and FrSKy, thanks to this video. Thanks a lot

    Thomas, that's good to know. I didn't realize this was an issue until several of you pointed it out. I may be ordering another TX in the near future and will let you know if I notice a difference as well.

  • @tstein
    @tstein 11 лет назад

    I guess I will learn also the 9xr and use it some time. But I was surprised the menues were so different from the 9x. Thanks again for all your videos.

    No problem. I'll be anxious to hear how your 9XR setup goes when you get around to it. Good luck!

  • @0xedoug
    @0xedoug 11 лет назад

    Luis, I also ran across the same issue. If your 9x is the same as mine, then you will need to mod/remove some plastic that were molded into the module bay. Seems like Turnigy added this to protect the petruding PIN coming from the TX board. If this is what you are seeing then be sure to open up the back and remove the TX board before you hack that plastic piece. After I removed mine then the FrSky module snapped in like its suppose to.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Thank you. No, I didn't have to cut or sand, but I did have to press firmly to get the module to click into place. It slides in nicely, but for the tabs to click into place it does take a bit of force.

    Finally got the Hobbyking Discovery Buzzer to work with 9x/frsky module. The fix was accomplished by adjusting the endpoints in the radio for my gear channel. I ended up using 37 and 120 for the end points. Thanks for your response Dennis. This buzzer has saved me many times. Well worth the 6 bucks. BTW.. You can get this buzzer in USA at readytoflyquads for $6.

    Under normal circumstances you want to take your jumper pins out after binding. Not sure if your case is different, but when I was binding my new FrSky setup I didn't have to jumped anything since the RX has a bind button.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Vinny, yeah I flew with the stock T9X module for over a year and loved it. If you want greater range then the FrSky is definitely worth the upgrade. Also, if you haven't seen it check out the FrSky Taranis. Double the channels, but about 2X more expensive. Hope this helps.

  • @dennisbaldwin

    No doubt. I was shocked at how affordable this setup was.

    Thanks again for another helpful vid. Just got my DJT combo pack and some spare receivers from hobbyking, pretty cheap in the end. Paid $90 for a Combo pack and 3 extra receivers to swap all my other cars and quads over. Had no problems with the setup except the little plastic mount in the back of the transmitter which I just cut out and all went smooth.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      Not a problem. A few others mentioned they had to cut the plastic mount as well. I guess there are a couple versions of the TX. Thanks for the feedback.

    Greetings and thanks for the feedback. It's much appreciated. If you have the standard T9X receiver then it will not work with the FrSky setup unfortunately. The D8R or the V8R will do the trick, but it does suck to have to do away with your old receivers.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Since you're flying the stock 250mw transmitter I can assure you that your FrSky system will out-distance your FPV TX/RX setup. I haven't done a full range test yet, but I've read about users getting well over a mile with FrSky out of the box.

  • @tstein
    @tstein 11 лет назад

    Hi. I installed er9x on my new Turnigy 9xr radio, not my Turnigy 9x. For the 9xr you only need the USBasb programming device. I wanted to try the er9x firmware, thats why I bought the Turnigy 9xr, Rather having two low budget radios, in stead of the risk to damage the one I had, the 9x, by soldering operations. Until I am familiar with the 9xr/er9x I am using my 9x with FrSky, exactly as you do.
    With the 9xr/er9x, and the FrSky with telemetry I hope some day to fly FPV.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Not sure as of yet. When I find out I will let you know. I plan on doing a range test soon. I've read about some getting well over a mile range.

    Grateful for the video instructions... I have just purchased a Flysky th9x only to discover that it doesn't support failsafe..... now thanks to your time and effort I now know how to upgrade the unit... cheers for that..... how come you didn't have to trim any plastic from around the pin openings on the old module casing????? (as I am led to believe that that has to be done with the flysky, even though it is one and the same as the Turnigy 9x)....

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      David Garrett That's a great question. I've heard lots of feedback from other users that have had to trim their TX and I'm not certain why. Perhaps I have an older version and the newer version has a slightly different case? Or maybe it's as you suggest that the Flysky requires it but others don't. At any rate if you do this made please let us know how you get along. Thanks.

      Dennis Baldwin Hi Dennis....My Flysky th9x arrived today...and yes I have to cut away the raised plastic pin protector on the bottom right corner of the module housing of the backplate...(the DJT module is the same depth but the pin housing is shallower.. ).. been trying to setup up my old quad with KK 2.0 board.... fun and games and a steep learning curve..... cheers once again for all your video tutorials... they have been a Godsend.... :-) keep up the good work bud.....

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    Are you asking because you're looking at purchasing one or do you already have it? I ask if you already have it because it would be an easy test to find out. If you don't have it then I can't offer much advice since I haven't tried it. I don't have a 9XR, but it's on my wishlist :)

  • @rodher12
    @rodher12 11 лет назад

    hello Dennis, very clear vid, did you have to cut or sand anything so module can fit on your Tx,? asking because i've been hear about you need to do that to the module.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    U => CH6

      Dennis Baldwin Question already! Hhaha, got my DJT module in my tx following your video so thanks for that but when I came to powering up my receiver (D8R-II) I had no LED's indicating it was on : ( I have my KK2 and 1-5 channels plugged into it but it's like it isn't receiving power, do you reckon I could have fried it by plugging it in the wrong way around, is it even possible or is it protected? Or do you reckon i've ordered a dud?
      Thanks dude! Hope your well.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      That's strange. I've accidentally plugged my leads in backwards before but never fried it. I'm assuming this setup worked fine with your other receiver? Have you tried powering it just with just one lead? Also, what is the BEC output of your ESC? I'm assuming it's 5V to power the receiver.

    • @ashley0leung
      @ashley0leung 10 лет назад

      Dennis Baldwin Yea I think it's a faulty receiver, ordered another one so it should come today and I'll be able to test it. I worked backwards and hooked up my previous receiver and it works so there has to be something wrong with the new D8R-II I bought. The power output it 5v standard so nothing unusual there ; ) Thanks for getting back to me dude! Will let you know what happens with the new one!

    Hey there. I have just finished building a 500 quad with the Naza M Lite. I have a 9XR Pro tx with a Fly Sky module. I currently am using the Turnigy 9 channel receiver, but have figured out that I won't have a fail safe capability with this set up in case of signal loss. My question is will a FrSky receiver with fail safe work with the Fly Sky module? If not is there a receiver that will? I went with the Fly Sky when I bought the 9XR so I didn't have to buy a dozen new receivers, the Fly Sky works with the HK TR6A receivers. Thanks for all your videos, they have been a big help in the build process.

    • @dkhallal
      @dkhallal 8 лет назад

      Im starting to realize that I'll have to do this to my radio to get the fail safe I'm looking for with my Naza equipped quad. I'm also realizing that I'll, have to get sensors for whatever I want to send back to my radio, is that correct? The two things I can think would be most useful are of course voltage and distance. I may have to check out the garage pilots blog site so I can stop bugging you.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 лет назад

      +Dean Hallal Yes you'll need to buy additional sensors unless you have a Naze32. There's a way to get voltage data from Naze32 to FrSky but I know you're flying with NAZA Lite. Perhaps you could use something like this: www.getfpv.com/frsky-flvss-lipo-voltage-sensor-with-smartport.html

    • @dkhallal
      @dkhallal 8 лет назад

      +Dennis Baldwin thanks again for reply. Looks like what I need. Man so much to learn every time I look at one issue two more pop up! Will have to decide on which module and receiver I want first then worry about the sensors. Have you seen the new FrSky HK has with the new style antennas? Anyway, thanks again. Is there a better way to message you, hate having to do this in RUclips all the time. Tried Garage Pilot but didn't see how to look for what I needed or to message. Have a good weekend.

  • @dennisbaldwin
    @dennisbaldwin  11 лет назад

    What mode are you flying in? Plane, heli, or acro? Have you checked your throttle curve to make sure it isn't the culprit? You should expect to see a linear curve by default, but perhaps something got tweaked.

  • @tptwk
    @tptwk 9 лет назад

    Great instruction. I just bought all the parts for my first quad build (SK450) and I got the Turnigy 9X. It is good to know that there are easy inexpensive upgrades for this transmitter. I was wondering what size props you recommend for my quad. As I said I have a SK450 with Sunntsky motors, Afro 30A ESC's and KK2.1.5 control board. I also have an APM 2.6 with GPS for a later upgrade. The only thing I don't have yet is the props. Lots of different variation of opinions on line (10x4.5, 8x4.7)???? Should I try both? What do you think? Thanks again for the great info!

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  9 лет назад

      tptwk That's a good question and sometimes come down to matter of preference. I originally flew 10" props and then went down in size when I started filming and taking photos. I wanted to deal with less vibes and have more responsiveness at the sticks. So now I'm flying with 8" props on my QAV400, which is the largest prop it will support. The best advice I can give is try both and see what "feels" better. Hope that helps.

    Will this FrSky DJT module will work with "original" Turnigy 9X 2.4GHz 8Ch Receiver (V2) (the one shown on video before you made binding with FrSky D8R-II receiver) ?
    I need this answer since I have 5 those 9X 8CH receivers. I have some troubles with range using original module, and suspect on module problem, so i decided to by this ny DJT module

    Are any of your prongs bent? I would check that first. I was able to get the module installed by pushing it into place while squeezing the tabs. Then I pushed in the middle to get it to click. If that doesn't work then I'm not 100% sure what's going on.

    Hi Dennis, great video, as are all of the videos you do. Would you trust this setup for reliability and range? As in trust, I don't want to ditch a 90 series raptor nitro heli if the transmitter or receiver fail.
    The group I fly with have had problems with the turnigy Tx and rx in its standard form with failure at a range of 300-400 meters.
    Obviously I would range test before use. I am just after general opinions of people in the know.
    Cheers

    Thanks for a great vid Dennis. Although I'm having trouble binding my frsky xjt module to my d8r-II plus. The xjt is in bind mode on my 9xr. I set the tx to bind. But when turning on my d8r-II plus receiver in bind mode I only get a solid red and green light that does not flash on the rx. No bind. The instructions with my xjt said that that switch 1 has to be on and switch 2 off when binding to the d8r-II plus. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time.

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  10 лет назад

      I can't remember the bing process for my D8R-II plus but I do remember there are two modes. One where you bind by using the failsafe button while you power the RX up and the other where you use a jumper to connect two of the pins. I'll have to look tomorrow but let me know what binding process you're using and we can take it from there.

    Hey Dennis, I just installed my DJT Module into my Turnigy 9X and the D8R-II+ into my FPV Flip w/Naza Lite GPS and it appears I have now lost the GPS position hold mode that the Naza offers. I had it configured using one of your other videos with the standard Turnigy receiver and it worked perfectly.
    I'm thinking maybe I have the GPS plugged into the wrong channel on the receiver? Have you run into this problem before and happen to know what receiver channel works with the Naza's GPS unit?
    As of right now the U port on the Naza is going into channel 6 with no response shown in the setup assistant. I've tried channel 8 as well with no luck.
    Thanks again for the video, the FrSky manual is terrible compared to this walkthrough.

    • @j.d.p6539

      Where did you buy the Transmitter without the module. I am trying to save a few bucks, but ebay only has the turnigy 9x with module, 99 USD.

      Hobbyking. They own the Turnigy brand, and they are far cheaper than anywhere else. They have warehouses in multiple countries.

    Hi great vids Dennis! Ive just done this setup. I had my 9x working great and used all the curves, gear on 5, etc you showed in other vids. 3 way switch like a charm! Cheers for all that. However, since Ive put the Dr8/DJT on, the quad is all over the place. Ive calibrated everything I can think of. It yaws on its own, all over the place...intermittently! Any ideas?

    • @ElmaOrkestra
      @ElmaOrkestra 9 лет назад

      I should add that Ive got a Naza Lite with the M V2 firmware on it and just installed an iOSD and a PMU V2.

    • @ElmaOrkestra
      @ElmaOrkestra 9 лет назад

      Eoin O'Callaghan I just removed the iOSD and the PMU and tried the DJT with the standard NAZA. Its all over the place...diving and yawing. Kinda like when the FC isn't stuck down properly.

    Great Vid Dennis, as always. Mine binds fine but when I power the TX and my quad back on after binding all I get on the RX is a dim green light not the solid red. Any Idea what that means? And second, what range increases are you seeing with this upgrade?

    • @shaybee22
      @shaybee22 10 лет назад

      Please disregard my previous question, I now know wassup. I though my unit wasn't working because I did not get the solid red light just the dim green and I was unable to arm. It appears the naza m lite w/gps needed a radio recalibration, mainly the 3 position switch, their values needed to be changed as they were off by about 2-4 points so the naza would not arm since it could not tell what mode it was in. The dim green light is normal, just means no telemetry just receiving which is fine for me as I just wanted something with a little better range than the stock 9x tx and rx. Thanks again Dennis for the great instructional vid.

    If you're asking if the FrSky will work in the T9X version that ships without a module then yes, I'm fairly certain it will. If you have a link to the T9X you're looking at I may be able to tell you. And if I didn't understand your question then feel free to follow up. I think I understand what you were asking :)

    Hey. Nice videos and thanks. Quick question. Since the Turnigy 9x and the FS-TH9X-B are basically the same product just different name, will this upgrade work with the FS-TH9X-B?
    Thanks!

    I kept getting a RX-ERR message when I tried connecting a FrSky RF module and RX to my Naza so had to use a Turnigy RX, REALLY need the FrSky loss of signal failsafe now tho so want to give it another go, Dennis can you let me know what channel numbers on the RX you have A, E, T, R and U from the the Naza connected to please?

  • @tshddx
    @tshddx 11 лет назад

    Luckily it's still quite easy. You just have to open up the transmitter, remove the 4 screws on the PCB that has the module pins, then cut away the little plastic sheath. I just used pliers to snap off the plastic, but it would be even easier and cleaner to use side cutters.

    Hay Dennis this is to have a stepper throttle on the Turnigy 9X, or the Flysky 9X. Take the friction bar that thay have in there for the throttle look to see where the gimbal throttle wheel has rubbed it's track on the bar, notch the middle of that tract with a file, twist a piece of wire from a loaf of bread across it after taking off the plastic cover. That's it a ratchet throttle.

    On the 3:45 I see that you have already prepared the place for FrSky module to fit.
    The plastic casing around the connecting pins is removed. Why don't you say anything about this? FrSky module doesn't fit the Turnigy 9X without this procedure.

    Really helpful video, thank you! Do you have any tips on connecting this controller to a computer (in particular a mac..) for flight simulators such as FPV Freerider? I am wondering whether to try a jack to jack or jack to usb but I don't really know what I am talking about..! New to it all :)

    • @dennisbaldwin
      @dennisbaldwin  8 лет назад

      +Theo Carter If used my Turnigy 9X with Aerosim using the cable that comes with the simulator. It's this one in the product photo:
      amzn.to/1PSuJeA
      Now I'm not sure if that will work with FPV Freerider though. I've used FPV Freerider with my Taranis, but not with T9X. Actually, if you read the reviews here:
      amzn.to/1RB1rjR
      There is a guy that says that cable works with FPV Freerider. Just make sure you remove the RF module as that caused problems with my T9X in the past.

    Hey Dennis, have you been able to get a "lost model buzzer" such as the one from Hobby King, to work with this setup? I have mine set to work with my gear switch but no matter what I do, as soon as I plug it into the receiver it starts buzzing. YIt works great using my Ezuhf system on the same 9x but not when I have the Frsky tx/rx on it.

    The only way I know how to power it is via one of the servo leads coming from the ESC to the receiver. It runs off 5V so if you can find another input source you could wire to a servo connector and use that to power it. What are you trying to do?

    Dennis, this FrSky D8R Plus Receiver supports telemetry. What other components do I need to use the telemetry feature? I have a APM 2.5 can I just connect the telemetry port on my APM 2.5 to this receiver to transmit telemetry data down from my multirotor?
