Contact cleaner.. used to call it tuner cleaner when I worked part time in a TV repair shop back in the late 60's! The old manual TV tuner contacts would get all glitchy. A little the cleaner, spin the dial a bit and good as new! Glad some things can still be fixed easily!! Thanks for the tip Bruce. I've always thought the switch felt odd when I turn my radio on... Just doesn't have that "positive" contact feel when moved. Now that I see whats going on inside, no worries (I hope!!)
You got me thinking. I never liked the feel of those switches, and the thought of losing control of a heavy multi copter because of it makes me ill. Very bad things could happen, never mind the flying machine. I've been considering doing something about it for some time now. You've convinced me, I'm replacing the factory switch with a good quality industrial switch and flip up cover. There's plenty of room, and I will feel so much safer when I click it on. PS - Thanks for all you do for our sport. We're all a bit safer and having a lot more fun as a result of your efforts. Best wishes for your continued sucess. Scott Marshall
Glad to see U still use ur 9x. For my part, i had the same issue twice, not a switch issue but a gimble (joystick), i was putting one of my 9x in a case. The case was to small to fit the 9x with a back stand & big tumbs joysticks. The pressure applied by the case cover to the throttle stick was make it useless. It took my 2 times to find the cause. FAILSAFE, thnx did not know FrSky had some. I bought a separate Failsafe, OMG i know not how this works. A hand would be welcomed. ty.
Installed ANYLINK in 4ex Futaba (72 MHz), bound it to a tr624 Tactic receiver. While setting the throws I found I had to reverse the throttle channel, then I used the power switch to lock in adjustments (my bad), motor began to scream ,failsafe was set wrong after reversing the throttle. Rebound transmitter and all was right in my world. Similar problems when throttle trim was not set low when binding but then engine did not go full speed. Good way to have a flyaway or blood letting on loss of signal. No prop on Anylink and some one was holding tail on the trim problem. Whew! Failsafe can be scary if ignored.
Bruce, love your videos and watch regularly, very exducational. Was wondering if you could help us all out by giving a video of an example fail safe setups and how to program it? I have often wanted to do this but not sure how.
Same thing happened to me about 4 months ago , No failsafe though and the tx started back up but was stuck on switch screen and throttle defualts to 1500 while in waning mode so my little plane hit the ground very hard lol . replaced with a nice little ip65 dpdt and im happy again.
With the cheaper 6 channel radios, is it possible to replace the switches with potentiometers so I can have variable control? The turnigy has 9 ch and 3 knobs, but it is still quite up there in price for me, and since I am making my first quad and don't want to have much invested in it, I would prefer to use a 6ch radio with one knob to use for the angle of a camera, and maybe the other switch can be changed out with a multi-position switch that will set the flight mode of the multiwii board (GPS return to home, acro, stabilize, etc.) I do understand that the channels are broadcasted as PWM/PPM, so thats what got me thinking.
Hello, I watch all your videos. They have been very helpful over the years. I just got a second hand turnigy 9x for my nitro airplane, and I am wondering what is a good rechargeable rx battery I should get? Should I get a 4.8v or 6.0v? Lipo? Nimh? Or? What do you recommend?
Yes, can do. However, different RC sets use different methods for setting the failsafe settings. Some use the position the servos were at when the receiver was bound, some have a transmitter menu option to set failsafe and others require you to press a button on the receiver -- so I'd probably have to do a different video for each make of radio.
WINGS RC Unfortunately, if you have th standard 9X with the Turnigy module then there is no programmable failsafe facility. To get failsafe you'd have to upgrade to the FrSky module and receivers.
Just a tip: while you have the TX open, you might as well do some contact spray on every switch, pot and on the 4 pots from your gimbals ;o) Keep it safe, and happy holidays to you all.
Fortunately I've never had an issue with any of the pots or switches (aside from the TACT switches which usually don't respond very well to contact cleaner/lube anyway. Others may have had different experiences however.
Hey Bruce, Can you please tell me where I can get myself a Taranis radio cause I cant seem to find them any where that has stock. Thanks in advance. Regards, Pete.
I have problems with my new 9X radio. Gear and elevator switch are not stable. Sometimes they work and sometimes not. Strange thing is that when i switch gear and elevator together both always indicates on on the display but not when I switch one at the time. I have modified 9X with avr cable. Could something happend when I solder the cable to the board?
Hi Bruce in regards to the Turnigy 9X transmitter, i live in australia and my local club dont want to let me join because i have a 9x and they say that the 9x isnt approved by the MAAA or something or another can you confirm this? i have been flying with my 9x for many many months and have never had an issue! *****
Hello, i came up with problem with turnigy 9x. After i change flight mode on my apm 2.6 from manual to loiter, drone uncontrolled sets 100% trottle and flys to the stars:) drone dosn't respond any commands to my transmitter inputs. even if i set throttle to 0% it still fly to sky. have you evenr heard about this issues? after lots of investigation i suspect turnigy 9x in all this.
I prefer to use an electronic cleaner & lubricant. Plus, the double pole C/O slide switches are available as well. Jaycar > CAT. NO. SS0823 & guys, can we please keep the comments clean? A little decorum & common decency would not go astray. Bruce, You need to allocate some moderators on the pole2poleRC fora & put in an appearance to allay the troops fears. ;)
so, would you recommend this radio for a noob like me? i am switching over from 72mhz.. as that the first/last plane I had lasted almost thirty seconds, I turned it left and it went right and got into a fight with a telephone pole. it lost.
Hi sir, i really need helppp! My turnigy 9x doesnt go into failsafe, i have my receiver connected to the apm2.5 and i see all the readings on my laptop and it seems that when i turn the radio off all the values (or the pwm) stays where they where, even if i set up failsafe on the radio it just doesnt work. In other videos i saw that when turning of the radio automatically the pwm on the throttle drops to its lowest levet. Thanks a lot!
nicolas azar if you are using apm you dont need to set up the failsafe on the transmitter. if you setup the transmitters failsafe then apm wont recognize that you lost signal. just go ahead and use the failsafe on apm and dont use the FS on the transmitter. i have the same setup and it works fine.
i know this is an old video and tx but i have a 9x i want to mod but the on off switch is playing up and would like to replace with something better. could you point me to replacement?
hello I have a Turnigy 9x and I would like to know how momentary switch used if someone helps me he would agradezido since I've looked everywhere i have not found anything thanks
Please could someone tell me how to set the fail safe on this Transmitter ? i am using it for a Quadcopter , I have looked at youtube I have gone to settings gone to fail safe changed thr from NOR to F/S 33% im thinking if it losses signal i want it to slowly fall to earth it seems to of saved it as its still there on 33% when i go back But if the model is running and i turn the TX off ... it keeps at the same speed What am i doing wrong please ??
hi bruce or anyone please can you help this might not be the place for this but i have a fly sky fst6 transmitter .i switched it on today and the back light will light up to show the power is on but there is no programs showing no righting comes up nothing at all just the plain back light please please please help thanks steve
That is the little TACT switches that they use. They are also quote "low price" components which have a limited life. Replacing them isn't hard -- perhaps I should do a video on that too?
That would be up to you, Bruce. Since i only use this radio for cheap models that i build out of fan fold foam i have been too lazy to solder anything as they still work intermittently. it is more of an annoyance then a serious issue when trying to adjust rates... :P i think it would be extremely helpful to others who use the TX for more serious use or a main TX.
Humm... cheap TX's? It's the only LOS RC part you'll never lose, never crash, and the most important part for setup function, control resolution, and enjoyment. Can't see any value in them if there is ANY possible issue like the power switch shown here. Same goes for the RX too to some degree, but since some people do lose them I can see using one in a cheap foam RTF but if I built it out of wood... or put nice electronics in it... just can't see risking it with a potential weak link. Same goes for servos. Remember... a tree doesn't need to fall to make a noise when you crash into it. Wow... my USB TX for my Logitech mouse just died! SOAB...ERR! Got a message that said USB device not recognized and now no mouse... rats! Now I'm using the touch pad... See what I mean? You just never know when cheap electronics are going to fail. By all means get a good used radio if $ is tight... protect the hobby "just in case". And build good flying habits by flying like you are in it. No excuse for crashing all the time except bad judgment and bad habits causing it. Better to start off slow and work your way up by developing good habits. Good habits let you fly far better and create reflexes that will save your model without thinking about it when landing. Well changing USB ports isn't finding the mouse TX and everything checks out in diagnostics. I'll reboot but doubt that will make any difference since it alerted me and knew "something" was there. But now it's not even being seen...ERRR! You know there's a name for this in physics called the Pauli effect and synchronicity. The mouse is almost 3 years old. What are the odds I wonder... I shouldn't have said anything about the trees. Everything needs a connection. Maybe trees don't like what we do to them before we run into them with their buddies... LOL
***** I just got a 9XR, and the power switch feels very loose and the radio blinks on and off if you bump the switch. Makes me a little nervous. Surely the switch isn't oxidized on a brand new radio?
Well the switches *are* made to a price so it could be a bit dodgy right from the start. If it's intermittent then you really ought to make sure it's fixed before risking any models (or someone's safety).
I like the honest insights into how cheaply these are made and how to make them run well. This is a great channel!

Today before taking off my 9x turned off (luckily on the ground). Now I need some contact cleaner.
Bruce, your role on Die Hard was really good! Bruce Willis for the win!
Just noticed this on one of mine the other day Bruce , just haven't got to fix it yet.
Nice call Bruce you legend you !!
Merry Christmas mate !!
Thanks for your efforts Bruce. Much appreciated. Tighter editing on some of your vids would make them even better.
Good video, Great job, congratulations!!
A video on setting up failsafes would be awesome.
An unflashed Turnigy 9X! I didn't know they still existed!
I have to keep one around so I can answer questions that people send me when they're having problems programming their own.
A video on setting up failsafes would be awesome. I have done it but has been ages.

Bruce when are you going to do an antenna upgrade video on the Taranis? I've ordered one on your recommendation and I want to upgrade mine
It's in the works now.

This has been a while, but a 3S LiPo to power your 9X should be good
OK thanks Bruce

Not sure if its possible, but is there a way to change one of the pots to a fancy slider switch like on the Taranis?
im sure someone will help you but off hand i think there 5k liner , ether way it sure is posable.
=] Cheers
Bruce, do you know of any replacement switches for the fine adjustments of the servos

See that you fly the 'gentleman flyers mode'
Why would my reciver not power servos or esc as its got power and binded but nothing works
hey mate just wondering what the trn switch is for on the turnigy 9x and can it be programmed into a channel. cheers

Good vid there Bruce.....still wonder why you get thumbs down from people tho...i mean its not as if your vid was uninformative..
Politics I'm afraid.
hello can we use frsky receiver with this transmitter
+fetty wap I've seen people using frysky with this transmitter, so yes.
+fetty wap only if you have a frsky module or DIY hack as shown in video, +aubatron is wrong
Funny. 2 days ago I stripped some old radios from Walkera and Hirobo:
Exact same flimsy power contact...
This happened to me once. It was the voltage regulator.
My 9x buttons quit working..well ..sometimes they work ...sometimes they dont..

I hope the Taranis uses better quality components.
This dosen happen with spektrum...!
Google "spektrum not responding" it's happened plenty of times, it can happen with almost every radio. At least its extremely un-common :)

Would this need to be done on the 9XR as well ?
I'll check the 9XR and see if they've used a different (better quality) switch.
