      Great question, Christian. The two most critical aspects of bar ownership are experience and financing. For most people each of these requires time. The best place to acquire hands-on experience is to work for an institutional player, such as Applebees, Chili's or TGI Friday's - each have developed a great "playbook" for operating a restaurant/bar. I would say working for a place like one of these for 3-5 years would provide you with all the experience you need, especially if you're able to climb within the organization. As for financing, most banks aren't interested in these ventures, unless for those who have another business with established commercial lending. If you take a partner, limit it to one, as most bars don't pull enough income to support more than two people. Good luck!

      I’m based in Sydney, Australia. We had lockouts for 5 years which killed the nightclub industry. Then the lockdowns this year from the pandemic which killed any hope of a successful nightclub here. I’m hoping by the end of this decade to have acquired enough funds to be able to buy my own land and build my own nightclub in either Ibiza or Mallorca. I think if you have a goal, if you have passion and dedication, then just work your solid ass off every second you’re not sleeping on your dreams, goals and careers. For me I just love running nightclubs and working in every sector of a nightclub and making each and every night successful. The high energy music from the trance DJs to the high pace partying and managing everything is so much fun! And on top of running the parties you get paid!! If you have the passion for something, then go for it!

    In our country.. Layout sizes narrow because of human size and more served refreshments

    • @Bardesigners
      @Bardesigners  5 лет назад

      Thank you for your comment. What country do you live? Certainly, human design factors are a function of average height, weight, reach, etc. and smaller people don't require as much space. One of the common mistakes I see in some U.S. bars is overly-large bartender aisles. This makes bartenders less efficient and eats up revenue-producing space.

    Hi Rick! great video, very informative. I'm a new subscriber! I'm interested in opening a specialty bar that sells martinis, cocktails and cosmopolitans. Will I need all the same equipment shown in this video or will I need additional/different equipment? Thanks you

    • @Bardesigners
      @Bardesigners  5 лет назад +1

      Glad you like the video, Angelina! You'll need most of the equipment mentioned, but the exact items will need to be verified by an expert, and this depends on the bar's layout. There are two ways to accomplish this: by someone who sells bar equipment (who'll provide the equipment plan for free in exchange for you purchasing the equipment through him/her) or an independent professional bar designer such as my company (who can provide you with plans to construct the entire bar); here's our video for our design costs cabaretdesigners.com/design-buzz/entry/bar-design-cost-guide. If your bar equipment layout is done free-of-charge, you'll need to figure out how to apply all other finishes. Good luck!

    I am in Houston Texas and i am seriously thinking about opening a sports bar in a strip center roughly the size of regular subway. I will have about 6-8 tvs and about 3 bartender stations. Anyway i can get a rough estimate of how much would it be to start up?

    • @Bardesigners
      @Bardesigners  7 лет назад +3

      Great question, Darrell! Hope you and your family fared well in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. To answer your question, a 3-station bar with one (1) automatic glass washer (the only way to go), you'd be in the range of $50,000 - $65,000; this would include a backbar, but not a soffit. If you add draft beer, a glycol system is normally budget-priced at $1,000 per faucet, for standard beer tower designs. This is predicated on a trunkline length of under 125 feet. You would also need to add walk-in coolers (WIC), and when you have a draft beer program you want a dedicated WIC for draft beer and another for case beer. If you're offering food, you would need a separate WIC for that function. Beyond the bar area, general buildout costs (for the remainder of the project) generally range from $150 - $250 per square foot, although the Houston market could be out of alignment due to the recent demand for contractors in your market.
