I'm like Jamie but my artstyle is so inconsistent and because I post so little it looks like I trace other are without even caring about the style--- I'm planning on doing commissions so I'll have to fix that
I know june has a lot on their plate rn but after the channel reboot i'd LOVE to see this done again with the new rea mascot and with new artstyles that inspire them, it'd be such a cool comparison! like the oban star racers tennis ball boobs translated to the new mascot!
This is kinda odd, but I’d like to see your entire drawing process. Real time, like a draw-with-me video and you can just ramble about whatever you want. Invite your friends to hang out while you do it if you like, and just have a chill atmosphere while you explain the way you go from rough sketch > clean up > lineart > coloring > any in between these stages > and ESPECIALLY the way that you shade and highlight with all that detail and make your art seem to have a “shiny” like quality that really sticks out to me; it’s one of the things that especially attracts me to your art.

I've found the "don't use black" to not actually mean blocks of black...but like...don't airbrush black (plz no), and don't use black to get a darker version of the colors below it. But solid black forms? Ubiquitous in Comics and Anime. Just don't try to shade red with black to get a darker red.

hey! artist here! just here to say don’t compare yourself to professional artists (or any artists really) they have had 10+ years of experience and do it for a living which gives a lot of experience and it can really damage your confidence in art to compare what i recommend is comparing your art to your old art to see your progress! it’s a good confidence booster in your art and pushes you to continue drawing and gaining more skill!

About Gorillaz, their artist and co-creator is Jamie Hewlett! All the official art is done by him. The styles change with "phases" which is basically an time span around a certain album. Phase 1 being Gorillaz, Phase 2 being Demon Days... You get the gist. Gorillaz is certainly an experimental art platform for Jamie.

and i guess why the shading is inconsistent is because in music videos, they don't go into as much detail, and for illustrations, jamie goes ham. besides, the art style changes every album, so it's not that weird.
