I love hermit crabs. I also love how you showed us the essential items for hermit crabs because I hate to see them in those death trap containers living there life in agony. Anyways I just wanted to say thank on behalf of everyone that watch your videos
*PLEASE READ* I understand those of you who comment things about the tank or what they need only want the best for the animal, but I would appreciate if you at least watched most of the video before commenting these things and assuming I didn't do research. I ALWAYS do tons of research and always advocate that others do the same. Everything you have all commented (ie about substrate, water bowls, food) I mentioned in the video and if It isn't in the video I simply cut it out. It's very tiring to have to explain myself to many people over and over that I did my research, know these things, and also mentioned them in the video. I don't want this to come off as angry so I hope it didn't, I hope you all understand :)
I recommend getting a thermometer and a hydrometer to keep track of your humidity levels! Great starting tank for hermit crabs! Looking forward to more videos!
It's terrible, I watched one be sold last night and the guy told the kid some pretty sad stuff. I told the kids about my channel so hopefully they'll watch and see the proper care
@Alina McPherson not really. The hermit crab trade likes to break the shells on a hermit crab's back so the only option available to them are those painted death traps.
First (I think?!) Anyways I’m excited that you’re expanding your channel into more than just fish! (Although I would still be happy with just fish lol)
Your tank is amazing! It’s so pretty to look at but also still interactive with the pet! I feel like so often it’s hard to get that combination and I loved that corner hammock ❤️❤️❤️
Hey maybe you should try to get some hermit crabs off Craig’s list or something like that. I’m glad your taking care of them properly but I think it would be better if you didn’t support the industry by purchasing crabs that are being abused. Nice video though!
Thank you so much for this video! As a hermit crab owner of almost 3 years, your information is SPOT ON! You definitely did your research and you nailed this crabitat setup! There’s always room for improvement and your tank looks GREAT! 😁
I love the amount of research you did for your future crabs, but there are a couple things that you might have missed. First off is the substrate, because eco earth can cause problems with molts over time, as the pH is too acidic for healthy hermit crab molts; also, eco earth isn't the most reliable when it comes to keeping their tunnels from collapsing. I recommend 100% play sand, as it's cheap (at hardware stores, it's $5 for 50lbs, just make sure it's plain playsand for children's sandboxes) and doesn't need any maintenance, if you set it up the right way, mixing dechlorinated water to make that sand castle consistency you mentioned. If it's done this way, you shouldn't need to mist the tank to increase humidity; another thing is that misting can actually cause flooding sometimes, and that can be deadly for any crab that's digging down in the substrate or molting, since they don't move after starting the molt process, not until they've eaten their exoskeleton and have hardened up completely. I know you said you were going to get more shells, but be aware that there are different kinds! Usually purple pincher crabs prefer circle shaped shells like turbo shells, but ecuadorian crabs (like the ones I have) prefer D-shaped shells, like whelk shells and whale eye shells. Whichever crabs you end up with, there are websites like Naples sea shell company that sell all types of shells, so you can make sure you get the right ones :) And I think the last thing is the size of the tank, because hermit crabs are actually very social creatures, so they need friends; if you get a pair of small crabs, the 10 gallon will work for a while, but you'll need to upgrade before long, depending on how often they molt; along with lack of growing space is the risk of shell fights and cannibalism, if they aren't getting the right kind of food. Hermits need organic, non-processed foods (anything with syrups, added sugars, or obviously anything on a hermit crab unsafe-foods list is going to be bad for them), with absolutely no pesticides. The easiest way to build up their diet is to visit the Hermit Crab Patch! They have all sorts of different foods to keep crabs interested, in case you end up with a picky eater. The main component of their diets should always be protein and chitin, as this makes up the majority of their insides, and if they're getting what they need food wise, and have enough shells to choose from, your crabs should be happy and healthy in no time. But also be aware that your crabs are probably going to dig down immediately when you put them in the tank, both to destress from the time they've spent being kidnapped from the beaches they came from and forced into colorful shells; stress is the biggest killer for these sturdy guys, so don't worry if you don't see them for a month or so after you first introduce them to your main tank. Only worry if you smell rotting fish, as that means that one of them has died, unfortunately. I know this is a really long post, but I've been crabbing for five years now, and I'm still learning things about them, lol. The hermit crab subreddit has tons of info (r/hermitcrabs), for anyone looking into them :)
@Wen Dong actually, I don't have much experience with saltwater hermits, mine and the ones this video are of are land hermit crabs. Sorry for that, but there are a bunch of saltwater subreddits if you want other people's opinions, and recently, r/hermitcrabs has been getting posts of saltwater crabs, too! 😁
I love how you do your research and are you’re making this issue known.I live in Florida and my family and I love going to the beach.About 2 years ago we all went to Daytona beach and in every other gift shop there was a whole section of hermit crabs, turtles and lizards. They lived in such small tanks. If you got close enough you could usually see some dead ones. When someone purchased one they just put them in those small plastic containers and said “bye!” Like that is horrible no information about them or food. This should really be stopped. But just wanted to say I love your videos and keep up the good work 💕
I got a hermit crab for my birthday today, and this was really helpful! I live nowhere near an ocean and I am kinda panicking, do they need to have a friend? Also where do I find a hermit crab when it’s so far away 😅
I mean. I get it. Trust me. Love that you kinda saved them but you’ll def need an upgrade in tank size. They move a lot and I mean I’ve seen set ups in big exoterras with just two. This probably isn’t big enough. They do get a good size. I would never keep a wild caught animal personally or on purpose but at least you did your research.
Thanks, the ones I will get are small so this tank will be good for them, also they only really molt once every 18 months so it takes awhile for them to get bigger
That looks great! The only things that I suggest is make the substrate deeper, be carefull of those shells the ones that come in those packages often have clear paint on them which is also toxic(I suggest ordering off on Amazon, and make sure that all water is dechlorinated
I wouldn't recommend the shells you got. They have lots of things sticking out and it slows hermit crabs down. I would get babalonyia shells or turbo shells. Maybe even Indian top shells, exept there expensive. Also if you make a tank set up video show people the rest of the stuff. It makes me a lot more interested. Also buy uvb!
this was awesome and super informative! I’ve been considering getting a hermit crab and I’m doing a lot of research myself and I love how thorough you were for the people who get a crab on vacation and have no idea how to set up a tank :)
Im glad that your wanting to expand your channel beacuse normally you have just fish but j love how you are getting other animals then just fish! By the way ( I love all your animals , No hate )I love your channel I have been on here ever since you started your channel. 😁😁
@@planetfishness yes that makes sense but I actually own some animals myself and I would maybe like to try and do a animal RUclips channel , but I have one 10 gallon tank with two Hermit crabs in it but I also have another 10 gallon tank with two Hermit crabs in it , I used to have a male Betta fish in a 10 gallon tank but it died. But also I just want to say I watch this channel everyday and I love it so much! Keep up the good work!😃❤️
I started with a 10 gallon & now have them in 20 gallon long. I have never really cleaned it except when they bury or hide food in their hut & it molds. As for the poop I occasionally get random bug infestations that will eat it & disappear when it's cleaned up. There's literally nothing you can do about the bugs because anything that kills the bugs kills the crabs. Plus they don't hurt or bother the crabs & they are literally bugs that come & go usually unnoticed in your home every day. Sometimes I even get a spider that will show up on the top of my tank, set up a web & eat the escaping bugs. My sand/coconut coir dirt is moist enough that my humidity stays up without my having to do anything. The only time I must my tank is when I've had the lid open for a while like during water & food bowl cleanings (change it daily or at least every 2 days & wash (rinse with treated water & scrub with dedicated toothbrush) the bowls weekly. Occasionally I use watered down dish soap unscented or Dawn to wash the food dish. Then use a different one while it dries. I have 4 dishes I use for food & treats. For water bowls I've found it easier & cheaper to use small plastic dishes like the Rubbermaid or whatever brand food storage containers. I find they like to actually bathe in the salt water while just crawling or soaking in the freshwater. So my saltwater bowl is a size bigger than my freshwater. Make the water dishes deep enough they can submerge in it but still be able to lift their head out of it. For instance my bowls are both the same depth (2in) & I've only filled them just over half way. The bigger dish is about 1.5in bigger across so they have room to come out their shells however much they want to if they choose to. I read that some do.
I have a question... So i am planning to get a mexican red leg hermit crab and i am a lazy person please don't judge but i want to know how easy it is to wash a hermit crabs tank and what do i feed my crab specifically like what fruit what veggies should i feed them
You shouldnt feed your hermit crabs fruit for one of there main food source the fruit can a good treat for them tho and for veggies probably say spinach carrots and romaine lettuce also nuts and seaweed is a good treat for them
Just a few pointers here from a more experienced owner, your sub should be about 5 parts play sand, to 1 part eco earth for optimal molt conditions and be about 6-8” deep, i would size up on the water dishes for sure! But other than that you seem to have done your research amazingly. I remember back when I got my first two hermies I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I just knew I always wanted one when I was growing up, looking st them in their “pretty” panties shells lmao. the lady at my petstore was quite informed thankfully lol I started with about the exact same set up as you actually :)
Hi I'm Ava and I'm a fan of hermit crabs, I have a hermit crab named Kwrabby and he has been with me for about 1-2 years and he is doing great. I'm going to rescue a friend from him at the beach from the bord walk.
Hi I kinda need help how can I keep my cage humid, do I need to give them a pool if so should I put in salt or fresh water. It would me a lot thank you!
I think your tank is really great, but I would get some different shells for them to move into in the future. The ones you got look a little too narrow in the opening :)
I have a hermit crab I just got it 2 days ago and it came in those king of tanks but then I went to Petco and I got a climber sand some extra shells a bowl with salt water in it to bath it’s self and a extra plant and a hide out tell me if that’s good
watching videos like this make me so sad bc i used to have goldfish and hermit crabs when i was little (bc i wanted to be a marine biologist) and they all lived in those horrible lil fishbowls and plastic containers and they always died super quickly (except my fave girl, dorothy the goldfish... queen lived for like a decade then jumped out of her bowl and died... rip... forever in our hearts) and i feel like such a terrible human child and i wish people would educate kids/parents more on the needs of goldfish and hermit crabs (and pets in general) so they all dont suffer 🥺🥺
I’m staying at a beach rn and all the shops have hermit crabs I want one but decided to wait since I didn’t realize everything they needed bc the stores had said they can live in a tiny plastic box for their whole life and not need much of anything
I had a hermit crab a while ago. Sadly I didn't know they were community animals so mine was quite lonely :( I had put a bird toy that was a coconut with a lader on it and he absolutely loved that little coconut I saw him in it a lot. I also used frog moss in a corner and he loved that as well. The moss also helped keep the humidity up. :3 next time I get a hermit crab, which I am planning on doing someday, I'll remember that they need friends.
* Me who just got a tiny lil hermit crab and watching this to make sure I did it right from my research like a month ago * Ok but 1 question : So I have a real tiny guy he’s like the size of my thumb nail and idk how to get a fish that’s deep enough he can climb in and out of until I get more sand to like build walls or something- what do I do for now HECC YEAH I EVEN REMEMBERED THE CLIMBING NET WOOOOOO!! But I need a lil dish my moat wasn’t high enough
I haven't had hermit crabs in a long time but I seem to remember having sea sponges in the water dishes, which depending on how big your hermit crabs are, will keep them from accidentally drowning. The tank looks great!!
Its honestly crazy seeing this because any people I knew who had hermit crabs kept them in a small aquarium with only sand. Like lizard sand with no hides or water bowls. I didn’t even know they liked water until recently lol. I’ve never wanted any myself but now I know how to properly care for them if I ever do want some or if my friends do.
Most of this info is great.. but.. crabs should be in no less then a 29 galon tank for 2/3 crabs (10g per ctan and they need a friend) you need a glass or other completely sealed lid.. crabs need to have 80% humidity or higher and 80-85°F to live comfortably. And they need pools of water that they can fully submerge in not bowls.
Great video in the hermit crabs. That's what my channel is about hermit crabs and there care also bettas, and my goldfish. You did good for the first time but I would just say you will need a heat mat for the side of the tank to keep your humidity in for them it should be around 75 to 80. Cant wait to see the hermit crabs you pick out. You should come by my channel sometime and check it out and tell me what you think.
My first pet was a hermit crab 🐚🦀 and my mom had a dog 🐕 their names were Charlie sissy and my big one had a superman painted shell so his name was Superman and he was huge and mine were in a great sized hermit crab tank 😊🦀🐚💛 they lived a very happy live so they were my first pet when I was a kid and I had a beta fish
Freaking out, I just took in 2 hermits from a friend who can’t keep them due to her living situation, I know I can do better caring with them because I’m literally a marine biologist and I have 4 wonderful planted betta tanks BUT LIKE I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO CARE FOR THESE GUYS I GUESS I HAVE GO LEARN TONIGHT 😅
Also remember metal is deadly to hermit crabs. The dirt/sand needs to be moistened to sandcastle consistency so they can tunnel through it. A glass top works better to keep the heat & humidity up. Mine love their tank at 80°f & 80% humidity. The dirt should be 3 times as deep as the crab is tall. So if the hermit crabs are 2 inches then the substrate needs to be around 6 inches. My 3 girls out grew my 10 gallon tank after about 4 months. They love fresh foods. I can't get them to eat pellets except those tetra fauna hermit crab cakes sold at Walmart. Which are so big I would have to crush them at first. Luckily they are moist enough I crushed them in my fingers, literally. Just used my thumb & the side of my index finger knuckle by the tip. The love chicken, tuna, nuts (especially walnuts and peanuts), honey, mango, coconut, banana, spinach, green beans, & go crazy for the flukers calcium for reptiles with vitamin D banana & strawberry flavored. They can eat just about anything as long as it doesn't have salt, onion, & (I think) garlic. So I usually cook just for them unseasoned. Haven't tried giving them beef yet but I've read they'll eat it. Calcium is super important for their exoskeleton to grow which is what they shed when they molt. Salt as in what's in most of our food & even in some reptile foods & supplements is bad for them because it often contains anti-caking agents that aren't always listed. These agents aren't good for us but are deadly to hermit crabs. Also always treat the water like you do for the fish. Tap water is just as bad for them as it is for fish only many times the damage is irreversible. I use seachem Prime. Instant ocean is what everyone says to use for them and everyone gets the basic purple box one which is good but it is often times more expensive because it is more popular. I use instant ocean's reef crystals in the orange box for 2 reasons; 1) I found the same small box on Amazon for about $4, & 2) it adds calcium & trace minerals like magnesium which they need that our water treatment removes from the water & if you think about it, it makes it closer to the ocean water they are used to from the beaches they are plucked from. Mine have grown from 1.5 inches (shell opening size) to 2 - 2.5 inches. They (all 4 girls, my 3 & my daughter's remaining 1) were all the same size when we got them. Which means my larger 2 had their growth stunted by improper living conditions. They will & often do withhold molting until they have what they need. This is often why they die early. Also lesson learned from experience, while they can survive temps up to 90°f, it's only for a short time. So it must cool down to 75-80 at night & you want to try to keep them from getting that hot often. My daughter lost 1 because her room temp stayed too hot & she wouldn't let me move her crabs to the cooler room with mine. Also they can tolerate temps down to 65 for a short time like a hour or so when it's coolest at night as this happens in nature. However, once again it's not something you want to allow to happen for too long. So having an under tank heater mounted on a side near the top (or at least above the substrate) is important. If your house stays fairly warm in the winter like 70-75 just get the smallest one. I leave mine on all the time on my 20 gal long tank & it keeps them from getting below 72 at night. I also use a 25w heat/uva/uvb light on them for the days when it is colder & I know my tank light (an old 10 gallon incandescent hood with 9w florescent bulbs) won't provide enough heat. They don't need bright light. It's just to help keep their day & night schedule straight. Everything else I learned from forums like the hermit crab association.

I had one about two years ago and I had no idea what I was doing
If you start it right, there is really not much cleaning. I have a 40 gallon breeder hermit crab tank. One of my easiest pets to care for

@@planetfishness did they die 🥺
I have a question...
So i am planning to get a mexican red leg hermit crab and i am a lazy person please don't judge but i want to know how easy it is to wash a hermit crabs tank and what do i feed my crab specifically like what fruit what veggies should i feed them
You shouldnt feed your hermit crabs fruit for one of there main food source the fruit can a good treat for them tho and for veggies probably say spinach carrots and romaine lettuce also nuts and seaweed is a good treat for them

Waiting so long for this keep up the good work
Lol thank you!
Planet Fishness thank you so much for the reply and pin 😆
I KNEW IT
YASSSS love the vids
Thanks!
Do hermit crabs need heat lamps? Because someone I know (who's never owned hermit crabs) said that they do.
Hi, you can use heat lamps bit a heat mat from Amazon works great. I have two of them for my hermit crabs.
@@DolphincutieWorld oh okay, thanks! :)
No heat lamps take away humidity they need to breathe. You need a heat mat that covers 3/4 the back of the tank above the sub
@@ottanked111 okay thanks!
Heat lamps or pads
FIRST HYAAAA
I'm going to rescue a friend from him at the beach from the bord walk.

do you necesarily need to keep a hermit crab tank heated?
i know that this might be out of your comfort zone but i was really hoping that you could get a bunny please also love your videos

This was such a great video I love youuu 😍😍
I have three hermit crabs in a 10 gallon glass aquarium and a little real plant in there for air circulation but should I get a artificial plant?
Get a bigger tank
You want the ratio 5.1 5 is sand and 1 is eco earth
Hi I kinda need help how can I keep my cage humid, do I need to give them a pool if so should I put in salt or fresh water. It would me a lot thank you!
1. You can enclose the lid to trap humidity or put some sphagnum moss in their tank.
2. GIVE YOUR CRABBIES TWO POOLS, ONE FRESH, ONE SALT!!!

I never heard of a hermit crab but great video
😂
Thank you
I'm a big fan
I can't wait :)))))))))) ( literally I feel like I just finished a season of stranger things)
YASSSSS
Wow I had a a hermit crab to its name what's mr. Crabs
I have a plastic tank is that ok for hermit crabs?
Your so cool
Yeah first viewer
I think your tank is really great, but I would get some different shells for them to move into in the future. The ones you got look a little too narrow in the opening :)
Ur the best
Thank you!
is it mandatory to have two hermit crabs together?
Can u name one of the crabs mrs crabs???? Plzzz
Cool
Thanks!
I have a hermit crab I just got it 2 days ago and it came in those king of tanks but then I went to Petco and I got a climber sand some extra shells a bowl with salt water in it to bath it’s self and a extra plant and a hide out tell me if that’s good
Kind*
You should get a other bowl filled with fresh water
Love your vids
Thank you!
U should upgrade to a 20 gallon 🙂
watching videos like this make me so sad bc i used to have goldfish and hermit crabs when i was little (bc i wanted to be a marine biologist) and they all lived in those horrible lil fishbowls and plastic containers and they always died super quickly (except my fave girl, dorothy the goldfish... queen lived for like a decade then jumped out of her bowl and died... rip... forever in our hearts) and i feel like such a terrible human child and i wish people would educate kids/parents more on the needs of goldfish and hermit crabs (and pets in general) so they all dont suffer 🥺🥺
I’m staying at a beach rn and all the shops have hermit crabs I want one but decided to wait since I didn’t realize everything they needed bc the stores had said they can live in a tiny plastic box for their whole life and not need much of anything
i always wanted a hermit crab but i broke
What does it mean if my hermit crab is not eating his food every day he is just hiding in shell but he is alive he moves around a little bit.
he is probebly fine give him more time
Sadie Wheeler thanks
Awesome video love your vids so much
Love your videos. On your last video you had 14k now you have 18k That a lot of subscribers you gain in a few days.
I was on the trending page thanks to all of you so that helped me gain a lot of exposure. Thank you so much for supporting!
I love this, he knows what he is talking about I hope I see his further videos. I'd like to see how he creates the humidity. . THANKYOU. 🦋
* Me who just got a tiny lil hermit crab and watching this to make sure I did it right from my research like a month ago *
Ok but 1 question :
So I have a real tiny guy he’s like the size of my thumb nail and idk how to get a fish that’s deep enough he can climb in and out of until I get more sand to like build walls or something- what do I do for now
HECC YEAH I EVEN REMEMBERED THE CLIMBING NET WOOOOOO!! But I need a lil dish my moat wasn’t high enough
I love your vids
Thank you!
Nice vid great work
Thank you!
I thx for the new vid keep doing what you do best
Thank you! A lot of dope videos dropping this month!
can u do a 50$ budget for a video
I love your fish and love the intro hope you have fun on your trip!❤️
OMG I lovvvveeee your hair style
Great video in the hermit crabs. That's what my channel is about hermit crabs and there care also bettas, and my goldfish. You did good for the first time but I would just say you will need a heat mat for the side of the tank to keep your humidity in for them it should be around 75 to 80. Cant wait to see the hermit crabs you pick out. You should come by my channel sometime and check it out and tell me what you think.
I use yo have hetmit crabs
I had one in the past but sadly didn't know much about them and didn't give it the best home
Wow cool dude I really like your desighn on your tanks.
Freaking out, I just took in 2 hermits from a friend who can’t keep them due to her living situation, I know I can do better caring with them because I’m literally a marine biologist and I have 4 wonderful planted betta tanks BUT LIKE I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO CARE FOR THESE GUYS I GUESS I HAVE GO LEARN TONIGHT 😅
new favourite youtuber! please don’t stop posting videos!! you deserve more subscribers!💖
