One thing that should be added is that fine grain sand is a good substrate for them! Along with tile and no substrate. I find sand is really nice for the aesthetic reasons, and it gives them something to grab onto when they walk/swim around on the ground Never use gravel! Axolotls will choke on gravel! They like picking at the bottom, and will end up choking on gravel. The fine grain sand passes right through there system since it’s so small, gravel however, will not Hope this helped any new axie owners!
@@imhumaniswear6736 if youre using a siphon to change the water make sure to siphon near the bottom because thats where all the gunk builds up. and you wouldnt need to replace the sand. sorry for being a year late
Thank you for posting your Axolotl videos. Your care guide was awesome in helping me figure out how to feed my Axies their bloodworms! In a jar! Coolest tip ever! I have four Axies in an 80 gallon with a chiller and a unique filtration system I rigged together. I really appreciate your attention to detail - the smooth edges of the tank decor, the plastic plants to diffuse flow, etc.. I also really appreciate your brevity and ability to give a ton of info in a very brief period. You're one of my favorite channels because of that!! :)
Some Axolotls like to jump. Mine jumped out like 2 hours after I put him in his tank. Please put a lid on if yours is young, overly active, or has previously jumped out.
Currently in the process of cycling and setting my tank up before I get a lil baby. This video is very helpful. I bought this exact usb fan. It's AMAZING. my tank temperature went down 2 degrees in the first hour and is still going down. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the idea of the insulation and fan! I have been wanting an axolotl for so long but was worried about cooling and cost. Thanks so much, subbed 😊😊
I love your videos ! They are short but very informative, and I wish that I had come across them months ago when I adopted two axolotls that needed rehomed. immediately
I have 2 Axolotl tanks one has a Cascade HOB that was REALLY cheap on Amazon and was completely ajustable. The other tank has a Cascade Canister filter. Can't say which works best but they both work super well at keeping their tanks clean! My one is a planted tank with Java Fern, Java Moss, Anubias and, Villisneria. The Villisneria grows slowly but does well and gets tall.
For a chiller just buy a cheap mini fringe and a drill 2 holes in the side of it. Buy a bunch of tubing and a low flow powerhead (but strong enough to pump the water that far). Intake on one side of the tank and return on the other and run it through the the fridge with a lot of tubing coiled in the fridge. Copper coils inside because it will get super cold and soft line to and from the tank. There are videos on it. It's pretty simple and far cheaper than buying a chiller. Do it right and you can still have room to put stuff in the fridge for Axolotl food and stuff for yourself. I have 14 Axolotls and I have two 55 gal and a 125 gal tank. I paint the back of my tanks black and run fine black sand to keep it dark and lots of love plants to keep the water clean and they like to play and lay in the tall plants. They are super fun!
Oh totally! I can't believe I forgot to mention buckets, or maybe the complete Python siphon system that hooks to the sink. Thanks for adding your comment so that others can see!
In my two axolotl tanks I have Amazon sword, golden Anubis, and Java fern in plant pots with no light and no fertilizers and their all doing great! They have been running for 6 months now. Also I just have an aquarium fan on top of both tanks I got them on Amazon for $20
Thank you so much this video was very helpful I am very interested in getting an Axolotl but I've never had any experience with axolotls only just regular fish when I was a kid so this video was very helpful thanks
I actually had to rare baby axolotls but we had to move and unfortunately they couldn't travel with me so I sold them to my friend and now they are happy healthy adults but I am going to purchase another one in about 2 weeks so yeah super excited
My dad is getting me one for my birthday in four days my birthday is on the 26th I’ve done a lot of research I just have a few questions and concerns but otherwise I’m so excited!
Yes! Like you said you need a mesh cover so the cold air from the fan can reach the water, I have dogs and I know that if one of my axolotls were to jump out my dogs would hurt him. I got a reptile cover from Amazon for $20 for a 20 gallon Long and what’s really great is the cover has a slit in the corner so my air line tubing from my sponge filter can fit through!
Currently I have a DIY cooling system with a rat's nest of cables from 3 PC fans to an RPM controller to a power socket, but these USB fans connected to a single USB extension cable will look much cleaner. Thanks for the suggestion!
Yay, glad to hear! I know ZooMed and other companies sell aquarium fans, but I've always heard they're kinda loud. I love my super quiet Arctic fan. :)
I know you said food would be a different video, but if I was to feed an axolotl worms, would they need to be alive? If so, how would I keep them alive for the longest time possible. How long do they live? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don't know much about caring for axolotls and I'm trying to convince my parents to get me one, lol.
Great question! Axolotls respond very strongly to the wiggling motion of the worms, so it's best to keep them alive. I don't have a ton of experience with keeping them alive for the longest time possible (since I usually just fed them very quickly), but I kept mine in a small dirted cup in the fridge for about a week. Hope that helps!
