One thing that should be added is that fine grain sand is a good substrate for them! Along with tile and no substrate. I find sand is really nice for the aesthetic reasons, and it gives them something to grab onto when they walk/swim around on the ground
Never use gravel! Axolotls will choke on gravel! They like picking at the bottom, and will end up choking on gravel. The fine grain sand passes right through there system since it’s so small, gravel however, will not
Hope this helped any new axie owners!

I have 2 Axolotl tanks one has a Cascade HOB that was REALLY cheap on Amazon and was completely ajustable. The other tank has a Cascade Canister filter. Can't say which works best but they both work super well at keeping their tanks clean! My one is a planted tank with Java Fern, Java Moss, Anubias and, Villisneria. The Villisneria grows slowly but does well and gets tall.

For a chiller just buy a cheap mini fringe and a drill 2 holes in the side of it. Buy a bunch of tubing and a low flow powerhead (but strong enough to pump the water that far). Intake on one side of the tank and return on the other and run it through the the fridge with a lot of tubing coiled in the fridge. Copper coils inside because it will get super cold and soft line to and from the tank. There are videos on it. It's pretty simple and far cheaper than buying a chiller. Do it right and you can still have room to put stuff in the fridge for Axolotl food and stuff for yourself. I have 14 Axolotls and I have two 55 gal and a 125 gal tank. I paint the back of my tanks black and run fine black sand to keep it dark and lots of love plants to keep the water clean and they like to play and lay in the tall plants. They are super fun!

I got a reptile cover from Amazon for $20 for a 20 gallon Long and what’s really great is the cover has a slit in the corner so my air line tubing from my sponge filter can fit through!

I know you said food would be a different video, but if I was to feed an axolotl worms, would they need to be alive? If so, how would I keep them alive for the longest time possible. How long do they live? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I don't know much about caring for axolotls and I'm trying to convince my parents to get me one, lol.

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  5 лет назад +2

Great question! Axolotls respond very strongly to the wiggling motion of the worms, so it's best to keep them alive. I don't have a ton of experience with keeping them alive for the longest time possible (since I usually just fed them very quickly), but I kept mine in a small dirted cup in the fridge for about a week. Hope that helps!

Would you suggest a wire lid or just a lid because I have four cats like I can trust them with my tortoise but when it’s fish I remember my fat cat loving to be on top of it

    Just a quick question.
I live in a cold climate, northern america. My house is drafty, so it's pretty cold in the winter, and up to 95°F in the summer. Would I need cooling? Thanks!

if you get a 20 gallon tank can you put two axolotls in it? also what if you get one then in a couple months or even a year you get a second one will it be stressed by the new roommate or will it be ok cuz i’m thinking of getting two just not at the same time and i really don’t want to spend to much money on a whole other tank

Such a helpful video! It is my DREAM to own a pair of axolotls but I have so much fear that this Texas heat will warm my tank top quickly! I know the chiller is the best option, but that price is the reason I don’t have the axolotls yet! I’m very curious how a fan would do here. Maybe I should test out your affordable method for a few months before adding the inhabitants, just to be sure!

I've found as long as your room is cool and you have something for surface agitation then it's not normally a problem. I have my tanks in a room with a regular window unit with its own thermostat set to 70. The water temp stays about 68. Plus you have this one room in your house thats cooler then the rest of the house if you want to take a break from the heat lol.

Tom Machin oh I could never lol I get uncomfortable when the house temp drops below 74. We also live with several reptiles and a parrot, so the house can’t be kept cold no matter what. 73-76 is the norm here, year-round!

Yea that's why they have their own room. I just used a spare bed room for mine. I like it cold tho. The rest of the house is set to 76 with central air. This one room is the only room with a window unit to make sure they are cool enough. The window unit is sooo much cheaper then a chiller also. I think I got it from Craigslist for like 125$ or so.

For sure! An experiment sounds like a great idea. I was able to drop the temperature by 8°F with just the fan and the reflective foil insulation. 👍

What do u feed them thats not worms cause my family would not want to cut up a worm when i go away but i do

I don't have an axlotl, but I've heard raw or cooked chicken or beef. You could also use bloodworms, no cutting!
I've raised baby birds before. I hate cutting up worms :(

hey, I'm thinking of buying an axolotl and I have a question: do you use a lid in your aquarium? Can you provide a link to it?

A lid is very important, they jump. I have had mine jump out a couple times when I forgot to put the lid on
