For anyone wondering why "your" engine found mate in 16 and in video it did not for a while. As Nelson explained - the default setting is depth 22. Now "depth22" means 22 half-moves (so it counts moves for both white and black) which means it can only look 11 moves ahead. Since the solution is Mate in 16, that is 32 half-moves, and is beyond the scope the engine is allowed to look at.
Dont know about stockfish but some engines do exceed their depth limit by going deeper on forcing and good looking lines. That could be why the full version of the engine may still spot the mate even though it shoukd be out of reach
I really don't know what your point here is. The stockfish as is is open-soource chess engine, so it is free in "full" version as much as it is possible. You can download and complie the latest code versions. Not sure about the point of engines ignoring the settings its as if saying I explicitly forbbit the AI of painting the background green, but it painted it green enyway so because it was full version of paint thinsg green and ignore the settings. Like what is the actual point here? @@aleksihiltunen7063
In this case the mate in 16 is found at depth 34 only. While some mates for black (for Rc7 first move, e.g.), say mate in 33 was found at depth 30 (and refined to mate in 18 at depth 40)....
No, that's not an excuse, you don't get to clickbait that he tricked stockfish when he runs stockfish at terrible settings. Using it with default settings on Lichess it finds it straight away.
13:20 For anyone wondering why you don't take the bishop is because of Qh1+, forcing white king to go on the g-file, and then black gets another queen.
Nelson, I'd love to see a "making of" video where we get YOUR perspective as you solve a puzzle. For example, the way you highlight the path of a given piece (or draw a triangle). Are you able to activate all of the arrows/lines in real-time? If so, I'd like to witness that from your side of the screen.
Nelson at 7:41 when the Bishop pins the Rook you don't lose your Rook as Ra8 gives check forcing Bb8. You follow with Rg8 forcing King to 7th rank and Rb8 captures Bishop. I know the game goes much longer as the King has escaped. I was just pointing out the error of your statement.
I'm still investigating this ... I agree stockfish immediately finds M16 in a few second for depths above 40, but only if it set to single line analysis. Nelson uses a platform whose default setting is analysis of 3 different lines simultaneously. And even with setting to 2 lines, it doesn't work ... so there is probably a bug in the way stockfish manages multi line evaluation.
In a game I would never even think about checkmating in this position. I would just play the perpetual check lmao. Even with the explanation I don't fully get it
Stockfish will actually fail by time on 15 minutes plus increment time control if you let it go too deep as long as you play semi-descent moves. it doesn't matter if you are -3.7, as long as your pieces can theoretically checkmate the other guy if they run out of time you win. On default settings stockfish will not run out of time on any reasonable time control and it not just beat an NM, it will beat the chess champion.
You must take the option "Multivariationpath = 1" then SF finds a mate in 16 moves in a few seconds. 0.00 meanes : SF sees no progress in further evaluation and stops this path
Question: why do you talk about black positioning the bishops to block the rooks instead of taking the rooks? ex. at 2:22 light bishop to f3, covers a8. If white follows with rg7, then bd5 covers both possible attacks by white. Why not start with Kg7? King guards the rook on f7, threatens rh8, checkmate. I guess... black would follow up with bh6 check, white takes with rook, still threatens with rh8 checkmate and black has no more moves to check white in one move. Oh wait: qg1. Never mind.
10:45 You didn’t explain why the rook can’t go to a7??? After Ra7 Ke8 there are many choices: If Rg7 then Qa2 defends both If Rfb7 then Bg5 If Kg8 then Qa2 pins the rook to the king If Kg7 then Bh6+
Black plays bishop h6 check, and no matter what you do, if you retreat or if you capture, you’re done for, because blacks queen now have all sorts of options. Allowing blacks pieces to put you in check (even if you can capture some of them) is a sure loss.
I got all the moves wrong (Except for the first 7 moves and the last move) Because I was always one square off. Ex I played Rook A7 and got it wrong because of Queen A2. (I’m 2000 rated in Puzzles)
I don't think that the stockfish can be "confused" because basically what it does just trying every move possible and evaluates the position. It can try a lot of moves until some depth. I bet that you wouldn't be able to win this position against stockfish because it would find moves like sliding king over back and forth at the beginning. It just won't go to the A corner and you can't force it to do that with just two rooks on the same rank
If you put king on g7, black can put you in check with bishop to h6. Sure, you can take it but it’s still a winning endgame for black. The key is to not allow black to put you in check, not even once, because then you’re losing.
Black bishop h6 check, and then it’s suddenly a winning endgame for black, since the queen comes into play and then frees up space for the b2-pawn to promote. The key with the puzzle is to not give black any opportunity to put you in check.
This is actually your first video I had to remove the like on click, because I couldn't understand your solution. Maybe rerecording was the better option.
AI chess bots analyze every part of the game differently. The endgame is analyzed differently from the mid game and opening. It looks from the analysis lines that it’s doing the same thing all the time, but there are things going on in the analysis that we can’t see.

Depth a discreet number of moves but has to do more with the way the engine calculates lines

Hey Nelson, Greetings from England, Happy Christmas. Hope your health is better or improving. Appreciate your videos and enthusiasm. 🙂
Man, that black king must be exhausted!
Hope you had a great Christmas Nelson!
If this situation ever happened to me in real life I would never remember this sequence to win
I know right?!? Me neither!
2:21 and wow my kid is screaming in the background😂
What about Kg7? What's stopping Rh8#?
Also, at 10:55, why can't black play Ke8?
I had the same thought, but I believe the reason it doesn't is because Bh6 buys black enough turns with Qg or h1 following up depending on your move.
Bishop h6, and then you’re losing. Can’t allow black to start putting you in check.
Nelson at 7:41 when the Bishop pins the Rook you don't lose your Rook as Ra8 gives check forcing Bb8. You follow with Rg8 forcing King to 7th rank and Rb8 captures Bishop. I know the game goes much longer as the King has escaped. I was just pointing out the error of your statement.
after the Rook takes the Bishop on b8, it also prevents the pawn on b2 to promote.
@Mmmeeee4 I can't see why not take the Queen and checkmate with the same rook
Problem: when white takes the bishop, black will play d2 and threaten to promote the queen, and how can you stop it ?
@@hellydpsinThe bishop on F8 can block
@@Mmmeeee4 Greetings. I agree but black can start pushing pawn to d2
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
Average stockfish moment be like:
Stockfish: "Mate in 29"
Also Stockfish: Depth 22
Stockfish immediately displays M16 after setting the maximum depth to 99 for me . Still a fun and excellent puzzle~ , 👍
I'm still investigating this ... I agree stockfish immediately finds M16 in a few second for depths above 40, but only if it set to single line analysis.

@@tontonbeber4555I found solution with 5 lines... but in 25 minutes 😂
Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Every move it glitches but finally it returns to normal and says that White is winning.
These chess puzzles are fascinating!! 😄
You are in a Maze of Twisty Little Passages, All the Same.
What in the...that is bonkers.
"I have a queen, two bishops and 3 pawns ready to promote. What do you have?"
"LMAO I got 2 rooks on the 7th rank. GG nerd"
How does one even come up with such a puzzle? Mind-boggling!
2:25 - how about Bf3? It covers the a8 mating square
we are hungry for a new rating climp series
In a game I would never even think about checkmating in this position. I would just play the perpetual check lmao. Even with the explanation I don't fully get it
No more rating climb?
5:17 I’m unsure why the black king can’t just walk back over to D8
I have the exact same question.
3 sets of 3 adverts each. 9 unskippable adverts in one short video.
at 7:40, after f4 bishop went e5, can't we just move a7 rook a8 to ? isnt that checkmate already?
11:6 why he is forced to go to c8 not e8 and thats the move where stockfish change
Conclusion: you randomly give check with the rooks on the seventh rank, until you finally give checkmate! 🙂
But seriously, nice puzzle!
Stockfish will actually fail by time on 15 minutes plus increment time control if you let it go too deep as long as you play semi-descent moves. it doesn't matter if you are -3.7, as long as your pieces can theoretically checkmate the other guy if they run out of time you win. @7:38 but wait, even if rook is pinned isn`t Ra8 checkmate? King cannot move and it is allowed to unpin a piece if it leads to victory right?
Ra8 is not checkmate, because Bb8
Love you Nelson!!
telling every unneccassarry move but not the important ones
When you didn’t see any moves💀 14:54
My engine saw it's winning for white on the spot and when I played the first half-move it saw mate in 16 on the spot
(@12:24) - why can’t black just a draw by 3-move repetition with 1 … Kc8 again after 1 Rh7. ?
7:21 Ta8 and takes a bishop!!
How long was that!
I think I am gonna analyze it since I solved it correctly.

Bb8
@mythbusters866missed that. You're right
my one is torch 50mb downloaded and it says M16 for black
Is bishop G5 not an option at 9:00?
Because of Ra1#
Arent there at least 3 repetitions at some point?
My cell phone says its m16 immediately
5:15 what about KD8
Nelson please put a video on chess advencher
Move your mic slightly to the side, so you don't breath directly into it. This will solve your plosives.
10:45 You didn’t explain why the rook can’t go to a7???
After Ra7 Ke8 there are many choices:
If Rg7 then Qa2 defends both
If Rfb7 then Bg5
If Kg8 then Qa2 pins the rook to the king

Amazing one! :)
What if you start with Kg7?

I feel like chess engine think it was a draw because you just force only their king to move in the same place, and it might count as repetition?
If there was a forced repetition available, he would have ran into it in the solve. There is no forced repetition if played correctly like he showed.
Always interesting to see the gaps in Stockfish's analysis like this.
Annoying puzzle
Dang what a crazy win for white where unexpectedly, stockfish disbelieves in a win for white. However, white is able to win in under 20 moves!
11:05 why not rook a7?
What if white plays g7 .
Next move is met
7:40 the rook is not being won ra8 bishop is forced back to block black still wins but not how you made it seem
"birth of Jesus" 😬
Why Kg7 does not work?
Bh6 check. Even if you capture with rook or king, black queen comes into play and black is winning.

Watch the vid.
Total novice here, so if this question sounds dumb I apologize in advance. Why not move king to g7 then rook to h8
If you put king on g7, black can put you in check with bishop to h6. Sure, you can take it but it’s still a winning endgame for black. The key is to not allow black to put you in check, not even once, because then you’re losing.
i got a 7000 dollar pc to play chess 😎😎
The funny part is who in the world would be that irresponsible to leave the black king alone with to rocks and another king?
It's a draw by repetition is what is sees
Why not K to G7 first?
Black bishop h6 check, and then it’s suddenly a winning endgame for black, since the queen comes into play and then frees up space for the b2-pawn to promote. The key with the puzzle is to not give black any opportunity to put you in check.
