I'm not the biggest fan of Visual Novels. However, I recently came across a sub genre: Anti Visual Novels! I hope you stick around as I take a deep dive into a few of them today!

Ddlc+ adds lore with side storys, as well as the virtual machine. This game will have a sequel that's not a vn that's also implied to have a third project afterwards.

@@rhejwkeh1822 Yeah I wish people didn't attack the entire Magical Girl genre to praise Madoka, the series clearly respects it and in the end plays into its usual messages and themes. Like, it's good because it's well written, people, it's ok you can admit that Magical Girls made you cry without coming up with stuff about being a brutal deconstrucion of the genre 😭

That scene you pointed out with Natsuki was the first and only time a horror game has actually jumpscared me. I'd already played the game but did Yuri's route, and I was playing again with a friend, who chose to do Natsuki's route. Since this was a second playthrough I didn't think there'd be any new scares so I was pretty relaxed and it caught me completely off guard. I loved it.
I love DDLC+ but I always recommend new players go with the original free version. I'm a huge fan of the characters and I loved all the extra lore bits it added, but the virtual machine experience just kinda kills the magic of the game for me.

visual novels can be much darker and more depraved than any other type of media because most of them are eroge and are therefore only for adults. this also allows them to have super interesting and bizarre narratives. visual novels can also have some of the most depressing and heart-breaking endings out of any type of media because you have spent hours upon hours with these characters. i have been more emotionally moved by many visual novels than anything else i've read/played/watched. umineko and subahibi have changed my life and the way that i think about the world.
you don't like reading and that's fine, but please don't act like visual novels have nothing to offer to people who do like reading.
to me, 'anti visual novels' and videos like this are just insulting and ignorant.

what is up with this phenomenon of western devs looking down on the whole genre of VNs & thinking they’re gonna be the ones to “fix” it by making yet another parody dating sim game
While I can't speak for every dev, I don't think that's the case for these games. In DDLC's case, according to interviews Dan Salvato was acting out of love for the medium of Visual Novels as a whole. From what I understand, DDLC is a love letter to Visual Novels while also poking fun at the overused tropes of the genre. Class of '09's case is a bit different though, since I'll admit that it's probably coming from a place of hatred for Visual Novels. In my eyes, both games aren't trying to "fix" Visual Novels, but are definitely trying to make fun of them in some way, whether that be from a place of love or hate.

Visual Novels, btw, are an incredible medium with a lot of variety. But the way you talk about it as if you think VNs are just moege (SoL romance) or nukige (porn). those are just two subgenres of VNs. and "dating SIMs" specifically is not that common. Especially these days.

I’m a huge fan of visual novels, but I don’t want to comment something snide on a RUclips video which someone’s made as part of a hobby (presumably). And I especially don’t want to do that over visual novels. It’s not that serious.
Anyway, I’d like to encourage anyone reading this to dive deeper into what visual novels really are. Or really, what the Japanese adventure game genre is. If you haven’t already. There’s a bit of a big misunderstanding of what they are in Western spaces. The term ‘visual novel’ isn’t used as often in Japanese gaming spaces as you may think. I’m no expert, but there’s the same misunderstandings in this video as everywhere else. Which is why fans are so tired of VN and dating sim parodies. Not necessarily your fault, OP. Novel games are niche.
A lot of well-loved visual novels or novel games don’t have the same happy-go-lucky vibe that DDLC uses as window dressing. Personally, I believe that the best criticism toward a medium must come from a work which understands the medium to its very core.
Disagreements aside, I like your editing.

I loved this video, it perfectly encapsulates how detached from the genre everyone who thinks Class of 09 was good really is, the fact you start with "I'm not a fan of Visual Novels" is such a strong start because anyone with two brain cells would've clicked off immediately, saying "most of the genre" is composed of dating sims right after is great because anyone who IS a fan of Visual Novels would click off without waiting for the strike-out not to mention it's just objectively false and the fact you openned VNDB to say some VNs are long (using Fate as an example because you can't get further into normie territory than this) but somehow didn't look at let's say the top 50 most-read/highest-rated VNs only to realise not only none of those are dating sims but they are diverse is so insane it had to be the point I clicked off the video, please remain filtered.

most of what ddlc+ adds just provides the players with more lore. so for some people ddlc+ is really cool and great yk? but ofc if all you care abt is getting scared theres no reason to get it and the regular version of the game is just fine.
dude im so sorry im an insane person but hearing you call corpse party a visual novel genuinely destroyed me 😭😭😭 like certain spinoffs are but if you ask the average player what it is, they'll tell you that it's a textbook rpg maker horror game; sure, certain elements *look* like a visual novel, but the gameplay itself is rooted in the foundations of the limitations of rpg maker (solving puzzles, exploring the environment, etc.) not trying to be mean or condesending or anything, I just think calling it a visual novel is way off base

Have you seen what happened with Hatoful Boyfriend? It started off as an April fools joke but the creator turned it into a full fledged game with interesting characters and mystery, yet no one remembers it as anything but a funny meme game… sucks because the BBL route and Holiday Star genuinely made me cry.

It's not that I really like visual novels but I really want to see more video games like DDLC that blew up the internet for a while and I really loved seeing how such a unique visual novel was able to do that.
I don't think anti-visual novel is a thing. If it still use visual novel as a method of story telling, it still a visual novel. In fact, Disgaea series is a visual novel since it use visual novel element to tell it story while having SRPG mechanic for game play.

It wasn't supposed to build on the game as a horror game
But to build on its commentary
Cause, that's half of why Dan made it. The side stories build on the characters and their lives, and the things they struggle with
Though, if you're insistent on the horror/main game side of things, they add a ton of emotional stakes which don't exactly make the horror more horrifying
But they definitely change you're perspective of it

I'm glab that I got the "good ending" in my first playthrough of ddlc
I have a feeling that you might like visual novels more than you think, but you've fallen into the trap of thinking that the majority are dating sims. Some people are getting mad at you here, but honestly, the genre is so poorly understood by most people that I don't blame you. Branch out a bit and experiment with what's available, you'll probably enjoy the majority.
As a side note, what's up with all of the weird elitism that's popped up around VNs in the last few years? It wasn't always like this, but now you've got so many people acting like this on the English side of the web that it's no wonder why people avoid them as the genre for socially inept weaboos.
