    I don’t know if it’s a good thing to do, but I use the diffuser on my scalp after I put in product. I use it like a brush on my fine straight hair and put my head down and brush from bottom to top. I get amazing root volume that way.

    Thanks for the Hair Hacks Hickox! I love “hair hacks” and it seemed a natural alliteration! 😋. I blow my hair upside down and the hack of pinning the sides down and focus on blowing just the top upside down makes perfect sense. Going to give that a try! Thank you!

    Wow, so glad I watched this one. I have one of those oval-shaped brush dryers, which is much easier for me to manipulate than a round brush + dryer, and it may be the case that I only need to use it on the top, where I want volume. I have struggled with the best combination of drying and flat ironing techniques, as my hair is fairly frizzy/wavy and needs to be smoothed regardless. This video was super useful - I have learned a lot from you this past year.

      I'm on the fence about getting one of those. I've heard they are damaging and can pull out the hair. Do you really like a brush dryer? I want more volume but having trouble with a brush and dryer at the same time. I end up using hot rollers for volume after I dry it.

      They can work great! The ones that have a plastic looking interchangeable brush with little balls on the ends of the individual teeth can be great. We used to use them in the salon all the time and I never had them pulling too much on hair.

      I have that tool (cheap version, not salon quality) and my hair is the same. But if I try to style it to the back, it gets too full. As to the question below, it doesn't pull any more hair than a brush and blow dryer but helps with less frizz because you're drying from underneath.

    Makes complete sense that I have NEVER thought about or been taught. I can't wait to try this....when the humidity is not so high for my curly-hair-that-I-want-to-style-straight style. In fact, do you have any great advice to help keep the frizz down during the humidity for the curly girls?

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад +6

      Awesome! Can’t wait to hear how it works!!! As for humidity, one thing that can help that I don’t hear a lot of people say is to actually dry your hair in the humidity (so outside, or open a window to allow more moisture in the room etc). One of the reasons hair gets frizzy is because it’s trying balance out the moisture. Blowdry in a dry climate then head outside into humidity and it will suck in the moisture, dry it outside, it will already be balanced. It is important to know that if you head inside into AC after drying outside, the same thing will happen. Hope that helps a bit.

      That's an intriguing idea.
      It explains, why I never experience this effect, despite having wavy-curly hair.
      We mostly don't have air-conditioning here and I only ever half dry my hair with a diffuser...if that. If anything, my hair gets frizzy and limp, if I do happen to spent more then half an hour in very dry air (the occasional conference room or such).

    • @lori900
      @lori900 2 года назад

      @@justinhickox Wow! Okay....that's a challenge since (the reverse of @Rara Avis) I am in and out of dry (where I prefer) and humid GA heat all day long. But I do appreciate that tip as I will try to make that a plan and see if I can pull it off.

  • @charlottejohnk6712
    @charlottejohnk6712 2 года назад +1

    Interesting concept! I’m going to watch and listen again to make sure I understand everything you’re communicating. I had my hairdresser cut my hair shorter in the back with a bevel and it looks great from the sides and back but the front is still layered probably too short because it falls forward and looks like a bowl cut. I’m going to try growing out the front layers and see if that silhouette improves. I’m now using Hairstory products and I love them, my hair is less flyaway and the fine texture is easier to style.

Hope it makes sense what I'm asking... Thank you again for these videos!!!

      Awesome! Glad I can help. I would dry the top first just to ensure the roots on top don’t dry too much before you get to them after the sides. Drying the top first will also allow it time to cool down while pinned up so the roots will even be more locked into shape up off the scalp with more lift.

    I just get my hair cut short. Then a week or two when it starts to grow, my hair grows fast in the summer. It has way more volume, I don’t even have to blow dry it. Once it gets a little longer, I will blow dry it. I didn’t like my hair after this last cut. She went to short on the sides and more on the top. So I just come home and cut it how I want it. I know, I shouldn’t be doing that. But I always have if I have hair sticking out after it’s cut. It isn’t cut right. It’s my hair and I know my hair. If I could cut it myself and have it look right I would. But I know better. So I give the stylist a chance. And then I snip off what’s sticking out when they’re done.

    Another fantastic tutorial. I learn so much every time. Quick question 🙋‍♀️… I have a long face but a shallow forehead (most of my length is in the mid-face). Is that why the one time I got a fringe (bangs) cut it looked appalling? Or was it just a bad cut?!!

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад

      Thank you! Glad to hear it. Honestly, it's tough to say...could be a bit of both. I'd need to see your hairline and texture etc as well as the bangs to really know how to best answer that.

    Yes, it did make sense, but when did you put on the heat protector? Before or after the volumising product?

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  2 года назад

      Great question. I would put it on, simply to help distribute the volumizer through a bit better while you're applying the heat protecter.

    I’ve always blow dried my hair upside down, and had no idea what I was actually doing (I’m pushing half a century!). It was just faster to dry my hair that way (lack of patience, and time to spend on myself lol) 😂

    Thank you for all of these tips. I’ve not only been applying product incorrectly, but also drying my hair wrong. I do find using a round brush a little difficult to use. Any suggestions, tips, or alternative brushes I can use. Thank you!

    I just scrunch my hair with a little product and then let it air dry with curls. Alas, as my hair grows longer it tends to have more volume on the sides next to my ears which makes my face look wider. As my hair is quite dry I only wash it twice a week so every morning I just scrunch it up again with a little water and I am usually good to go again. As I don’t go out very much except to the grocery store or appointments it is enough for me but I still like to look OK during the day. DO YOU HAVE ANY HACKS FOR FINE, CURLY, GREYING HAIR? I loved your video on cutting bangs and will try your advice next time I cut mine as I never let the hairdresser cut mine as they always cut them too short.

    Hi Justin,
    It always feels so cheesy to say "You have read my mind"!!!!! But that is true 🤷‍♀️
    Great, much needed and almost requested video.... I always section my hair to blow dry. I had heard that drying in the opposite section of where you want to lay it creates volume. That works for the most part except after that volume, the volume on the other side close to the scalp seems so much less. I was going to reach out to you and ask if you had any tips for that but you just addressed that with hack #4. Thank you once again for this much needed video!
    As always, much love and light to you from (self proclaimed) your biggest fan from Charlotte, NC ❤️

    Are you a mind reader?
    I was trying to figure out this very thing only this morning.
    Since being in menopause my naturally fine hair has become even finer and I am.struggling to get any height at the crown.
    I have a pixie bob and have no problems at the sides but the top is such a problem.
    I've even ordered some Velcro rollers to see if I could stick some in while I do my makeup to see if they help lift it a bit. Will let you know if it works once they arrive. Sigh. 😑

      Hey! So glad to hear I could help a bit. Yes, this is much easier to use on shorter hair. A fair amount of volumizer on top and lay the sides a bit flat and you’ll see a huge difference!

    • @raraavis7782
      @raraavis7782 2 года назад +2

      Oh, please be very careful with the velcro rollers! They're evil little buggers.
      Try only one at first and see, how that goes. You don't want to have half a dozen of them stuck in your hair, after finding out, that they're harder to remove then you thought!
