"Vacate! I want off this ship!" "You can't leave. She won't let you." "You just get your gear and get back on the Lewis and Clark, Doctor, or you'll find yourself walkin' home." "I am home." Oh, that's not good... 😕 Fun Fact: The rotational shot of the space station over earth in the beginning of the movie took nearly a third of the film's visual effects budget. Scientific Symbolism Fact: The Event Horizon was named after the theoretical boundary surrounding a black hole, within which gravitational attraction is so great that nothing, not even radiation, can escape because the escape velocity is greater than the speed of light. Technically, it is where the physical universe ends and physical laws no longer apply. So the ship's name is symbolic for its journey beyond the borders of the known universe. Hellraising Gate Fact: The script originally described the Gateway machine as a smooth and featureless black orb, 10 meters (nearly 33 feet) in diameter, suspended in midair between large, rotating mechanical arms. It also was said to contain a stable black hole within it at all times (which the ship used as a power source), as opposed to briefly creating a temporary one. Paul W.S. Anderson decided to redesign it to involve interlocking circles as a homage to the puzzle box in Hellraiser (1987), which served as an inspiration.
Event Horizon will always hold a special place in my heart, First watched it at the age of 16 as a back-to-back with Pitch Black. This film is probably right at the edge of what is socially acceptable to see in a movie. And I like the existential nature of the Horror. The unknown/implausibility of it makes it so that part of the horror is your own imagination filling in the gaps. A very "how deep does the rabbit hole go" kind of experience. And the acting of Lawrence Fishburne, Sam Neil, and the other crew members is pretty believable. And I think it helps we are used to seeing them in similar roles, Lawrence in The Matrix and Sam in Jurassic Park etc. We Trust them. And this movie plays on that. Great Horror.
@@AbsoluteApril Loved both films ever since! The intro to Pitch Black plays in my head every once in a while. As well as "Do you See?"/"We won't need Eyes where we're going" From Event Horizon Is an often quoted phrase/inside joke between me n my gf. 😆
Ok. You know. someone I can kill some demons n aliens n robots with. You on the squad... throw in some dinosaurs n meteors...we got it...man, that would be a movie.
Saw this movie. Opening day. Noon time. I was the only one in the theatre....had to get up and move to the very back, so my back was to the wall with no open area behind me....this is the scariest Horror/Sci-fi I have ever seen and experienced. I love this movie, but also hate it and fear it.
Saw this opening night in the theater with a bunch of friends of mine! Definitely one of the better sci-fi/horror movies out there! With this cast you should jump into "Dog Soldiers" (2002) and "In the Mouth of Madness" (1994) next!
This movie makes me sad, because it could have been SO much more, but even with all its faults, it's still my favorite onscreen adaptation of The Shining.
Love your reactions sir! I remember this movie freaking me out when I was a kid. "Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see." You should check out Deep Rising from 1998. It's a great creature feature film by Stephen Sommers and starting Treat Williams, Kevin J O Connor, and Famke Janssen. It's a fun ride for sure.
Funny how Velvet Acid Christ had a song with a bunch of quotes from this. The ship was a CG composite of Notre Dame, and the building nearly burned down a few years ago.
The first time I saw this movie, it made me mad. I hated it quite frankly. Then after time passed, I'm ok with it, but it's silly. I do appreciate hearing other people talk about it. Their appreciation for the film makes it a better experience for me.
What makes this movie really dark is that Miller didn't die at the end and went to the Hell/chaos dimension with Weir, so he took his crew's place and the ship still won in a way. The movie that you saw (and the only version available) is actually a very heavily edited version, the movie was originally going to be 130 minutes, but the studio wanted a much shorter movie for the summer release, and the text audiences reacted negatively toward the longer cut. The movie had way more graphic and explicit gore before the cuts including the blood orgy scene during the captain's log which was originally a lot longer and showed more hardcore gore, torture, and perverse sex. It grossed out the text audiences so much that they took most of the gore out of the movie lol and it pissed off the MPAA as well. There were also a lot more character /dialogue scenes taken out as well.
This isn't 100% true but on the right lines. There was a longer cut, by 45 minutes however audiences found it FAR to messed up at the time and to be honest... it was lol Like you saw the "hell" recording in its entirety, no jump cuts things like that, you saw the doctor get operated on in full and organs taken out. From a prop prodction view it was gorgously gross and they did such a good job and allllll of it was cut out. Please also bare in mind, this was the 90s. There was no efficient way of saving things outside of storeing your hard copies in places like a salt mine, event horizon was not one of those things. The pieces were destroyed after the film was made, to make room for other productions at the time. There is however ((this is from numerous people in the film's production)) that say somewhere out there, is a workprint VHS. I used to think it was impossible for things like that to be found, but there is now a fully uncut original mario movie that actually makes it good, as well as many other uncut projects now too such as Hellraiser 4, so im holding out hope for this one now too.
This is by far, my favorite horror sci-fi. Glad you enjoyed it Showdown!! The production was rushed, but they still made it look AMAZIING!!! There were supposed to be some killer scenes edited out of the film, that were lost. Rumor has it the cuts were even gorier and more terrifying.
Many have commented about the distinctive design of the ship, it is impressive for good reason. The interior is modeled on the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral in France (a real architectural marvel of the middle ages). Adding futurism and darkness to it just evoked this strange blend of physical and religious terror. Good horror/sci-fi that was almost great. I still want an Event Horizon 2, even 25 years later. A solid sequel could add universe-building depth the way Hellraiser 2 added to the original (condition: Sam Neill must come back - screw Jurassic Park sequels, I want more of Dr. Weir delivering sick 1-liners).
Dead Space video game co-creator said in an interview that he , got inspired in a horror video game after watching Event Horizon. Any gamers out there know that there is a Dead Space remake coming next January.
Watched this ages ago and loved it. Watched it a few years later and fell asleep. Watched it again recently and really appreciated its depth, characters, imagery and story. As I’ve gotten older I appreciate and enjoy things differently. Great review Showdown 👌🏼 Would be interested in a Phantoms (1998) review.
I always liked this movie. The CGI of course, did not age so well, as much of the CGI from the 90's hasn't. But overall I like the story and concept! I always felt this movie was 2001: A Space Odyssey meets HELLRAISER...
Thats a nice movie. It is sad, that we only get a short version of it. A lot of original scenes were deleted because producers decided they are a little bit too gruesome... If i remember whole story correctly.
