Under number three you mention the Tibetan Mastiff, while the Šarplaninac (colorful dog) appears on the video. The Šarplaninac is a little-known breed that definitely should have been on the list of the top 5 livestock guardian dogs as well as caucasian sheperd.
I don't think great Pyrenees should be at the second position on this list, nowadays it's hard to find good working great Pyrenees and even though they are very effective against bears that were always present in the Pyrenees mountains they lost their ability to protect sheep from wolves since they disappeared from France in the 50s. Now that the wolves came back in numbers and that shepherds had to use lgd dogs the number 1 casualties are the great Pyrenees. The Armenian gampr is definitely more effective since it's always been a working dog and not a pet.

My top 5 great pyrenees, spanish mastiff, central asian shepherd, caucasian shepherd, turkish kangal, the reason tibetan mastiff and anatolian shepherd arent here is becaue in my opinion they are just worn down versions of kangal and caucasian shepherds, anatolian shepherd was descended from kangal and the tibetan mastiff is mostly a luxury dog these days rather than a livestock guardian
An original dokyhi Tibetan is what you after if you need livestock guardian. Ignore all the Chinese mastiffs or pig mastiffs as they are fondly known. They breed for looks and coat not for tempremant. The natural protective instinct in true Tibetans has been breed out. True Tibetans work on their own all through the night without human direction. During day they are usually tied up . Hence the dokyhi. Meaning tied dog. Also a tsang kyhi is what monks use for protection. These breeds do not work the same as dog kyhi. They are specifically work for one master. The history of the Tibetan is fascinating if you ignore the mess the Chinese did to this breed. Now they are not popular and worth nothing there is thousands of them roaming wild allover China because the breeders just gave up because the price fell hugely. Disgraceful. But get an original Tibetan mountain dog and you be hard pushed to beat them. They are one of the original breeds of dogs in this world. Many breeds came from the Tibetan. Including the rottweiler.
I'm a native romanian and I grew up near sheep, cattle and everything nedeed on a homestead farm. We had shepherd dogs, native romanian, German shepherds and hunting hounds, transylvanian hound. I still keep in touch with friends and relatives in the country side, high hills region with sheep been kept high in the mountains, involved in keeping sheep. Conclusions: - kangal, central Asia and Caucasians fight a lot among themselves. They do not cope with native dogs. They also hurt each other pretty bad. They do bad against bears. They go physical, get hurt and permanent fear from bears. They are too big and too slow to fight bears. They are also too big, slow and not enough stamina to keep with the sheep flocks on the steep mountains. They roam quit a lot and all three breeds, when they are more, they roam the woods at night and kill wolfs. No good for environment. Young ones, alone, get lost in dense woodlands. Also the young ones, during wolf night attacks are lured by wolfs in to the woods and eaten. They are quit aggressive against people. From the mastif/molloser breeds the best results, except the native breeds - carpathian shepherds and mioritic shepherd, have been notice in mastino espagnol, but only for wolfs, not bears. And also not high up in the mountains, only in medium high hills and in the traditional pastoral way of keeping sheeps. The best sheepdogs are the one adapted to your geography, local predators and way of keeping sheep. Take also in mind that sheepdogs work in packs. You need them to work together, not fighting and hurting each other. Also having to manny dogs in a packs will make them lazy and they will fight to much. Wise shepherds in my native country are trying to balance the back with medium light dogs, especially females, hard working how are patroling constantly the saroundings especially when flocks are moving. Wolfs and bears attach during the day too. They also need to be brave and aggressive enough to block the wolfs until the big muscle come. And you need big boys too. Several males how can go physical in case the wolfs are pushing. Also, a good shepherd dog against wolfs is not alwaysgood against bears. Big dogs are good against bears. In our native country, the wolf type dogs, FCI group 1 dogs performs better then mollosers. In other countries, mollosers do. Depends on geography, predators and way of doing your business. All the best.
maybe you can do a talk on the biggest livestock guardian dog from turkey the AKASARAY MALAKLISI..close region where the kangal and the anatolian shepherd area is..i never hear about that breed.. i have read that the breed is the biggest of them all..bigger than the kangal or anatolian....thank you for your time mr dogumentary...
The Anatolian Shepherd is not a true breed but rather, as DNA studies have confirmed, a Kangal mongrelized with any various local dogs. The DNA of the Kangal and Central Asian Ovtcharka dog breeds are so close that scientists consider them the same breed with topographical variations in appearance and structure.
That's like making a list and having the Mastiff five and the English Mastiff one. If you want to say they're a different breed they should still be number one and number 2 because their characteristics are almost exactly the same. Anyway I like the video
Great Pyrenees are amazing and I would have placed them on top of the list. Unlike other breeds, they stay with the livestock at all times. Also, the Alabai is great for guarding against bird predators as well as land ones, they mark their territory and don’t wonder off like other breeds do.
I know many people who have livestock and generally speaking: Pyranees do not stay near the livestock as much as others, they sometimes wander too far. And hands down, they do not do as well against large predators, you will have more losses. They are still a great LGD, but many other options are better
@@hammothw4814Absolute agree. I do have a Maremmano Abruzzese and though these two breeds look like twins, Maremmanos stay with the livestock. My neighbor owns five Great Pyranees… I‘d always choose a Maremmano.

Croatian tornjak is in my opinion the best dog for this job. He can fight off 2 wolves, and legends say 2 tornjaks can safely defend flock from a wolf pack or even bears. Check it out
I think the best dogs for this job are the Balkan breeds of sheepdogs. Sarplaninac, Greek, Karakachan, Mioritic, Bukovina shepherd dogs. The reason I say so is because these dog breeds never ever stopped of having contact with wolves and bears. They were and more than others still are part of nomadic herding. Nomadic herding and life conditions of these dogs were or still to are, very harsh, resulting, by natural selection, to rouget, healthy, fearless dogs. I very much doubt if Western livestock guardian dogs, like the pyrenees, Maremma, Spanish Mastif had for centuries bred to, or have, actually confronted wolves. Or if they were part of nomadic herding flocks. I did not forget Kangals or Central Asian shepherds. I think they are of too aggressive nature
I love how the Kangals were looking up at the drone in the sky! Very observant dogs.
they look up all the time because they are checking to see any birds of prey that can swope down and kill a lamb or infant animal in the flock

I'd love to see one on the nomadic breed such as the azawakh! They seem really rare in the USA and I can't find any good info on them
Would it be possible to bring a Male kangal puppy into the house now to guard my chickens, rabbits and goats from my other dogs which are full-grown Cane corsos. Or will they just fight?.
I own 2 Great Pyrenees!! Wonderful dogs who are definitely awake at night
Oh I can’t decide, Great Pyrenees are sooo beautiful and I love them to pieces!
But I also really really love the kangal. Dogs are ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Best video
Love from india
Which one would be best for area that gets really hot in the summers? Any?
Kangals can handle heat
Under number three you mention the Tibetan Mastiff, while the Šarplaninac (colorful dog) appears on the video. The Šarplaninac is a little-known breed that definitely should have been on the list of the top 5 livestock guardian dogs as well as caucasian sheperd.
Imo Bakarwals are pretty good lgds aswell, but they're almost unheard of
I don't think great Pyrenees should be at the second position on this list, nowadays it's hard to find good working great Pyrenees and even though they are very effective against bears that were always present in the Pyrenees mountains they lost their ability to protect sheep from wolves since they disappeared from France in the 50s. Now that the wolves came back in numbers and that shepherds had to use lgd dogs the number 1 casualties are the great Pyrenees. The Armenian gampr is definitely more effective since it's always been a working dog and not a pet.
💯😎👍🏿good observation..agreed
We got one that's a literally the best dog we've ever had at the farm but we got extremely lucky finding him. Most these days are bred for like house living and it's sad cuz buster is like, the shi* lol
Tibetan Mastiff
Depends, in France they are working dogs only. The breed is still very well preserved here.
@@kebbesan There are definitely a lot of working Great Pyrenees in France but far from only. I personally know 3 people that have one as a pet and seeing them is a common sight in my city, which is close from the Pyrenees. Maybe you live in Paris that's why you don't see them as pets
whos that singing?? love it
What about the Armenian Gampr ??the one and only LGD
No Kavkaz best breeds from Georgia
In Europe there are special collars to protect the throat. The throat is the weak point. Fila Brasileiro is a sharp dog for a hot climate.
Great list but I think you should've done a top 10 because there's many dogs that are as good or almost as good as these 5.
I agree, I would love to see the Maremma
I thought the Anatolian Shepherd was also know as the Kangal? Please explain the difference?
Will you do the Boz shepherd
I apologize in advance because this is off top, do you have any knowledge of the Laizhou Hong. I would have emailed this question if I knew where to email it

No farm should be without a pit bull. They are awesome at protecting their pack. Look how a couple of them can hold down wild hogs. ❤❤❤
Pit bulls make excellent pets but are generally the dumbest breed around
What about caucaisian sheperd. ofatcharka there good guardian
The name IS Qartuli Nagazi 🇬🇪
Would you recomend any of these for home protection?
@@robpoles2 thanks for the perfect answer...
I feel u
Im from bakersfield CA
And im buying a house soon... just tryna figure out what dog i want
Im a owner of a GSD right now... 21/2 year old male
And does exactly wat ur saying
The respect is their the loyalty and he does get agressive with a certain people...
He is the best thow..
But i dont like his hair hah
Cheers to @spartan7543 for this answear. I can totally confirm this,. I grew up with LGDs but would not recommend them to anyone, unless these dogs get a job they can truly work on. I will never get an LGD myself because I would't be able to provide it with a happy life. Those dogs should not be held as family dogs in my opinion cause they're bread for a purpose. Thats not to say they're not loving and affectioned animals.
I have 7 Irish wolfhound kangal mix. at my Ranch.... with the average weight of 170 lbs..... I don't have problems with wolves anymore
Of course yes kangal and anatolian the best
I'm a native romanian and I grew up near sheep, cattle and everything nedeed on a homestead farm. We had shepherd dogs, native romanian, German shepherds and hunting hounds, transylvanian hound. I still keep in touch with friends and relatives in the country side, high hills region with sheep been kept high in the mountains, involved in keeping sheep. Conclusions:
- kangal, central Asia and Caucasians fight a lot among themselves.
Why is the Kangal in the number one spot while the Anatolian is on the fifth?
maybe you can do a talk on the biggest livestock guardian dog from turkey the AKASARAY MALAKLISI..close region where the kangal and the anatolian shepherd area is..i never hear about that breed.. i have read that the breed is the biggest of them all..bigger than the kangal or anatolian....thank you for your time mr dogumentary...
Is there a short haired livestock guardian?
Difference between Kangal and Anatolian? Seem extremely similar
Kangal and anatolian are the same breed. Also, you might want to take a look at the romanian livestock guardian breeds
They are genetically distinct dogs
Good if you could do a vid on Sarabi Mastiff from Iran
I wouldn’t put the Great Pyrenees or Anatolian in the top 5, top 15 in my opinion but the rest no complaint
I totally agree
Qartuli Nagazi 🇬🇪🐕
Those people have no idea Georgian Shephard is by far the best.
you chose the 1st thumbnail 😆
Can you have a male Akita with a bunch of female ?
Great Pyrenees are much bigger than what the internet says. My puppy is almost a year and already 115. He will end up between 140 to 160. Thats about the weight most run. Although ive seen many that are an in shape 180 to over 200 pounds
Some even as large as 600 lbs.😂
You need to add the lifespan and size in weight of the breeds.
I don’t have a dog or farm homestead but if I did I’ll have those 5 breeds
In the film shooter it was a broholmer not an anatolian shepherd .
Croatian tornjak is in my opinion the best dog for this job. He can fight off 2 wolves, and legends say 2 tornjaks can safely defend flock from a wolf pack or even bears. Check it out
Aha, dva vuka malo sutra.

Romanian shepherd excellent guard!
The only negative point about the Kangal is that they wonder around abandon the flocks. for lonh periods durring the day.
Cool fact: He is sleepy cause those dogs are nocturnal.
Namibia not Not Nambia.......great video none the less!
Highest success rate of lgds on my list
1-Kangal and Alabai
2-Ovcharka
3-Malakli
Nagazi 🇬🇪🇬🇪🇬🇪 number 1
We have a GP mix and she’s amazing.
