To be fair, in a interview, the author says she's never watched Avatar, so ..... idk what her publishers are doing

Yes she said the same thing on goodreads.

Exactly. Like, how is she supposed to draw in Avatar fans if she doesn't know anything about it. Her publishers should've chosen another IP, especially if there's no silly child to war hero arc. Bc it's that mc's silly child humor/innocence that gets the more jaded characters and the audience to like them. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I think that since Naruto is a Japanese franchise, her publishers thought that a majority of readers wouldn't know it and therefore took a US-American franchise as a comparison point. And they didn't care if it fit or not...

@Sammy-fmhky Even before this really became a trend, I learned in a writing course that publishers want you to name one or more comparative works in your query letter so they can better understand what vibes you're going for in your book.

@Sammy-fmhky Sorry, but what does this have to do with the points I was making in this thread? ^^' (1. publishers want you to name comparative works so that they can get a feel for your work; it's just stupid when the comparative works they use for the readers don't fit; 2) the publishers probably thought Naruto was too 'foreign'/unknown for the majority of potential readers which is why they called it similar to the US-American franchise Avatar (even if it didn't fit) - which is so dang weird/xenophobic to assume imo)

I like that the three MCs clash, and it's absolutely not found family lol. Maybe they're fated enemies, maybe fated allies. The book also feels like a dark fantasy, if I think about it.
I like the themes of the book, and my general feel of it is it's not quite criticizing a specific religion but rather examining the concept of morality in a broader sense, but because morality is so tied with religion, people with religious trauma can definitely relate to some parts of the book.
Also, I loved Naruto when he was his most annoying, like almost from the start of the series, so no wonder I like Aina. They're kinda annoying in a similar way 😂😂😂
I also hope Aina isn't a chosen one. Her birth is so mysterious though, I bet there is gonna be some twist there lol.
Anyway, nice to hear your thoughts on this.

Same here, Aranel was my favourite and Meizan was just a tad bit behind him. Their dynamic, especially their bantering was one of my favourite things to read.

Great review. I enjoyed this glad it’s getting attention and that you addressed it’s actually so much darker than Naruto. I get the team seven and chakra similarity but tone wise this is more seinen than shonen but I guess publishers don’t understand that. The author seems to be an attack on titan fan from her socials and I actually got that vibe more than Naruto though it’s not THAT dark yet either. But the end of the book for Aina felt like it could be the beginning of Eren if you get what I mean? Thematically too this is way more on those lines (I think)

@Sammy-fmhky oh totally with the child abuse and stuff. I guess I meant is the characters are darker and more negative here? Like Sasuke is an ahole but Naruto is amazing and positive and I want him to be my friend and I can’t say that about any of these three. They are all more Sasuke. Or worse like Eren in Attack on Titan levels of messed up. Their dynamics are very early team seven but not the characters themselves like he says

I remember when Reads with Rachel covered this book. I'm not really sure where the Naruto and ATLA comparisons come in. It sounded like there was more a heavy emphasis on exploring Hinduism and perhaps even Indian caste systems as a whole. I've certainly never thought to use the levels of reincarnation as an allegory for exploring systemic prejudice and oppression, but I'm in no position to complain since my own work uses Shinto yokai to do the exact same thing.

I studied a lot of Shintology in my free time so I really need you to explain what you mean with "Shinto yokai" because yōkai come from folklore and Shintō is a religion that worships kami and kami are spirits but not the same as yōkai...

@@EleiyaUmei What do you mean? Yokai tend to be a type of kami generally characterized by unexplained natural phenomena

    • @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd
      @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd 3 месяца назад

@@EleiyaUmei Pretty much any source you look at is going to tell you that the line between kami and yokai is pretty much non-existent and even then their definitions for these things are going to differ. For instance, yokai are generally thought of as more antagonistic kami, but this conflicts with the idea that yokai aren't always evil. The best way I can think of to explain this is to go to the word's literal origins as describing supernatural phenomenon that defied explanation (at the time).

I’ve come to think that if Kishimoto was given time to plan out Naruto more, it would be the greatest anime ever, so I’ll be checking this book out. P.S. The Bleach fans will not like that one 💀
